A scary Game Boy MOD

In this video, I've decided to focus on a true timeless classic: the Game Boy Advance (GBA). This portable console, which was released many years ago, has captured the hearts of millions of gamers.
However, I wanted to take the gaming experience to another level, so I tried a special modification: I added the backlight to a GBA that was given to me by a backer. This update makes the display brighter and sharper, allowing you to play games even in dimly lit environments.

It’s really cool that you can adjust the brightness that way, it makes me wonder what other neat things are possible with screen mods like this. Since custom circuitry is already required to convert the video signal, you could probably make a mod kit that watches for a specific button combination, and then takes a screenshot and saves it to an SD card or something. EDIT: You would already have full control over the video signal, so maybe you could even have a video overlay when you take a screenshot, that says “screenshot saved” and how much room is left on the SD card. …maybe I should stay away from writing novels in the comment section 😅
@Sayakas_Digital_Attic
@Sayakas_Digital_Attic 10 месяцев назад
Wow, I love your creative thinking! You're absolutely right; with the custom circuitry involved in screen mods like this, there's a world of possibilities for additional features. 😄 Don't worry about writing novels in the comments; your ideas are a valuable part of the conversation!
@red2503
@red2503 10 месяцев назад
I think it can be done, but I don't know if this mod is open source and I don't know if there is enough demand for the original creators wanting to make it. If you want to have an SD card reader, I think you have to cut a hole in the shell and I think not many people are willing to do this. Or maybe you can put it under the battery cover if there is enough space I think the ribbon cable contains an FPGA chip which converts the original video signal to signals required by the IPS screen. If this is the case and depending how big the FPGA is, it can constantly buffer 1 video frame and write to the SD card whenever a certain button combination is pressed. This would not be very difficult to make.

Very nice mod! I remember back early 2020 a friend of mine was getting rid of his older consoles, and asked me if I wanted his GBA by any chance. If I remember right, it was a grey model as well, the screen was completely damaged though and the console didn't power up at all. I thought it would be nice to see if I could make it work again. The power issue was just the switch that needed contact cleaner, that was encouraging! So I went ahead and got this exact same IPS screen replacement kit. Plus I got a translucent orange case as well. Looked like brand new, and worked well. I just tried it again now, I don't play it often at all to be honest. The power button has issues again, so I might have to replace it this time, but I'll see if I can take it apart to clean it thoroughly.

Nice video. I also installed this mod a few times and I have some advise and feedback for you. You forgot to put in the plastic piece which goes on the power led. Now there is a hole at the power led. This also happens to me a lot. Also I'm not sure how much you are planning to use this Gameboy, but I have noticed the original A, B button, D-pad and button membranes are much more comfortable to use than the ones which come with these cases. So if you use it a lot, maybe it is worth it to swap the buttons and membranes with the originals. If you put back the original D-pad, you have to make sure the orientation is correct (it is easy to put it incorrectly). Basically if you look at the D-pad, there is an indentation at a corner of the D-pad. This indentation has to face bottom right when you are looking at it from the front.
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy 8 месяцев назад
The buttons maybe but the membranes go spongy over time or just strait up bad, break. This is something that we had to always replace and the 1st thing that is being done. Especially on a Nintendo device because they are often even worse then what you would find on a dirt cheap clone machine.

My guess is that the previous owner only wanted to do a mod and not started to do one. Given how messed up the case was that person probably sourced it like that even with that keychain too wanting to do a custom case mod of sorts not just a swap. But never got the chance to do the project. Reason could be that the games for this are hard to come by, expensive or often broken too so the person simply gave up. Especially today, I barely see these listed in Europe. Also the mod sellers some are hard to be trusted, plenty of scams going around and for something reputable you have to pay up more. I been in these situations too, wanted to mod certain handhelds then realized games that I want are hard to come by and there is next to no one in my region who would buy a modded console or even these. The games I bought also were broken or broke on me. Mods expensive by the time comes to me etc. So lost interest and was busy with other things so I sold all those instead of hoarding and waiting for "the right moment" rather give others a chance who actually can make use of it. Like you for example. So it's nice to see when someone fixes these old devices. Especially today when we live in a no-repair and toss away era. With that said hope you also didn't tossed out the old case because that also can be used up for a custom case mod project. I personally was always more interested in old PlayStations so since I had a modded PS2 from back in a day and refreashed few of my PS2s through the years, I didn't needed anything else next to that since it can run emulations up to that PS2 era and that is basically all I ever need. I might look into modding a PS3 but time will tell ... right now "life" have other plans for me ...
@Sayakas_Digital_Attic
@Sayakas_Digital_Attic 8 месяцев назад
I completely understand the difficulties in finding games and trustworthy mod sellers and It's great that you chose to pass on your devices to those who can make use of them. I share your interest in old PlayStations, and it's impressive that you've modded a PS2. Best of luck if you decide to explore modding a PS3 in the future. :)

I modded my GBA in a similar way. Only issue I see is the screen flashes bright at regular five minute intervals. It's not a biggie, but kind of annoying. Overall the bright, clear screen replacement works much better than the default GBA screen in that I can actually see what is going on now. Any screen flashes with your kit? I never soldered up the brightness controls on mine and I am happy with the mid range brightness.
