Professor Lee Cronin is trying to create synthetic life in a Glasgow laboratory - giving non-living materials such as sand, rock and metal the ability to divide and multiply like biological cells. If he succeeds he will have answered two of the biggest questions in science: how did life on Earth start? And could there be life on other planets? But Cronin has a problem - despite being a highly successful chemistry professor, people are beginning to question how realistic his theory is. And worse than that, he has publicly set himself a deadline, which has now arrived…

I would say more than great. It is full of what is the essence of humanity: knowledge, passion, belief.....

This is the same guy who could not answer the questions posed to him by James Tour. Yea we can make one or more of the four molecules necessary for life in the lab, but these are molecules not organisms. The leap between the two is fatally difficult to answer.

Lee's son, at 9:37, in answering where we came from, gave the correct answer...his father did and will not

Yes, evolution had to have "created" life, but not at all by accident. The fact that life WAS self evidently creatable should tell us that it must have had an intelligent builder as well, and by neither our philosophical or scientific logic, can we explain how that builder or its creative alter ego could have originally created themselves. Nor can we explain how intelligent self building entities can have done other than evolve themselves! The elemental necessities for building life will most likely have existed in the universe from its theoretical beginning - and the mystery is not so much a question of what that substance did and how it did it, but of how some form of that material, intelligent or otherwise, can have started to exist at all. Since, for one of the very best examples, there seems to have been no logical possibility of ever having something come from nothing.
