The reason the prints didn't come out quite right is the paint consistency, it needs to be really thick and viscous, to the point where rolling it out is hard and you can actually hear the roller sticking to the glass. Eventually the paint should form little bubble-like spots on your glass, which will get smaller and smaller each time you roll. After that, you can apply the paint. Best paint to use is typography paint as it is very pigmented, oil-based and thick. Another good option is oil paint that has been left sitting on a newspaper for a day or two, so it becomes more thick.
This turned out really well! I've never carved anything so big, but I like to make my own rubber stamps. I've found that with homemade, and even bought, rubber stamps, the first impressions are never great. You can either ink it up and use it several times, or lightly go over it with a nail file (very gently) to give it some "tooth'. Goes a long way in making better impressions.
