Seafarers( Merchant Navy) are on the Front line in the Maritime Industry. Their job also different from people's Job in the Land. Their Life is Very very Hard life & Tough! They have to pressure their feeling, because missing their family, parent, wife, girlfriend, because do their job for long time on the ship. They take Risky job, unpredictable accident..,even death! High Appreciate & Salute for all seafarers!! Stay more strong,, Safe sailing.. :-) Warm greeting from Indonesia.

Thats why this is not a job if you're in a relationship or have a wife. This will be a job for me because i love being alone while also interacting with people.

If companies would try to create better working enviroment for young officers, for instance shorter working contracts, I bet there would be no problem recruiting more greenhorns. It's just that the companies are too busy counting every penny they earn. My recommendation for every aspiring seafarer is to choose the Navy instead, most of the times they have contracts that civil seafareres can only dream about (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off ex.).

I believe that seafarers are exploited. Poor wages and no time off. Especially those from poor countries. Like the Phillipenes.

Alexandra Uwera the money they make when converted into their own currency goes a long ways. That's why they do this type of work. There homes are nicer than ours in North America

''half a million of officers work onboard recently and there is still 20 thousands open vacancies '' Is that the reason many officers looking for a job onboard for long period?

@@draven9481 what makes him say that? Its lonely lonely lonely. You spend your best time of life in a giant metal box with nobody but 12 people most of whom don't want to be there. It's horrible. And that's why they pay so much money.

@@Bobotv1000 money gap is also reducing fast with people going abroad or working at good jobs in their own country if they are good at studies Shipping life was good back in ghe old days contracts were plenty many open jobs good money long port stays more facilities like medical and transportation provided permanent employee tag , nautical studies were cheap to do just 6 months and you go on ship Now all has changed now there are so many people that you dont get jobs , you have to give money bribe companies through agents to get job on ship also vacancies are less there are lot of cadets passing every year with mon guarantee of job if you do so e other trade you have plenty of options you van even go abroad with your studies if you really wnat to earn good money now joining ships is not that worth it maybe for some who are form poor background its okay for them but they also have to take loans to get their studies done on time and after that search for jobs on their own where no company gives any importance to your resume you need to have reference or pay money thats it and in the long run you dont get to see the world the port stays are negligible just a few hours in which you cant go as there is a lot of work by the time you get free you are back to sea if you are so passionate about sailing buy a fishing boat and do fishing rather than sailing on ships fishing boats also pay well and are close to the coast its only rewarding when you own one

Why isn't something being done about the low wage third world workers ? I find this job interesting, but the Government of my country just allowed vessels to bring in TFW's, most of whom come from East India, and are only paid 2$ a day.
