Part of the mission was to locate, protect, and rescue downed aircrew in North Vietnam and Laos. Somewhat successful. I went into Bien Hoa, RVN with the gunships in spring 1972 to stop the NVA Easter Offensive. We lost Stinger 41 on May 2, 1972 day mission with pilot, FLIR, and crew chief KIA. 7 others (copilot, navigator, NOS and 4 gunners) got out and were picked up. Pilot (Terry Courtney) stayed at the controls and got the AFC for his sacrifice so 7 others could live. He's buried in San Diego, CA. I didn't know that Naked Fanny was a secret base BTW. Finished my tour at DaNang AB, RVN Nov 5, 1972 DEROS. 17 months total.
