In 1941, a developer in Detroit built the Birwood Wall, a barrier meant to separate Black residents from white residents. Eighty years later, it’s now believed to be one of the last physical relics of segregation in the North, and it is leaving behind a legacy much larger than its original intent.

I was just about to say exactly the same thing until I scrolled down and saw your comment. I am a white Canadian living 3 miles from the border. I find the opposition to telling the truth about history is a dangerous thing. Especially when the fear-mongers wrap it in teaching people to hate themselves, America is really struggling right now. As Canada is effected by America I hope the majority are able to prevail.

There is another massive wall in Detroit called 8 mile. There is constant tension between the suburbs and the city. For example there are no Kroger, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, actual malls, there is 1 multiplex movie theater on 8 mile, but no regional or national movie chains like Emagine or AMC in the city, but those exist in the suburbs.
@danielles.3574
@danielles.3574 2 года назад
Now c'mon and tell the whole truth....I grew up on Birwood right down the street from this wall. This wall is not nearly as obvious as the contrast between the city of Detroit vs the suburbs. The most clear racism IS that there are none of these businesses in Detroit til this day. The ONLY store in the city for less than 10 years now I believe, is Meijer, 2 locations that's it(which came as a result of Michelle Obama calling out the food deserts in the inner-city communities). It's very apparent ain't much changed. Thank you for pointing this out...I had this conversation with other residents of Detroit earlier this year. There has always been a requirement for most residents in Detroit to take their hard earned money right out of the city to the suburbs all around it for most daily necessities. This is the REAL reason there is a difference in what you see in the city vs the suburbs. #JUSTICE

@@ErroneousMonk1 no because those were only put up to terrorize and control black people. Not the same thing. Those statues are linked to racism and racially motivated murder. A lot of them started popping up in the 20th century as response to black people's progress in society. Segregation affected both races for the most part. I have never met ONE conservative that said things like that. You must just be another blame game person. Did you notice where this wall is? It's in the NORTH and in another democrat controlled area. So who is doing what to this area both in the past and now? You need to actually open your eyes and mind and really see just who was what and who did what to people of color. Seems to many blacks want to continue to use race baiting to make a untrue statement. If you vote then maybe next time before you check that box for another democrat maybe really see which party has done more to open the door for people of color and which party would rather keep them on the government payroll.
