One senior living with disabilities is on the brink of ending up on the streets. Melissa Nakhovaly with how the community is coming together to help and how her story is highlighting the need for more affordable housing.
She is one of thousands of seniors who are in dire straights ! As a low income senior myself I can no longer afford my rent, and cannot find any rent geared to income. Like thousands of others seniors, I also use the food bank. With serious health problems, I still have to work part time and I'm over 70. I have no husband or children. I have been looking for affordable housing for myself and several other seniors for two or three years now, to no avail. What really makes me angry is listening to Freeland and Trudeau brag about how much they are doing for seniors ! Instead of bringing our OAS and CPP up to par with inflation, they are paying for seniors pensions in Ukraine ! This is madness ! The dental plan is a joke. Most seniors over 70 have dentures and they do not cover the cost of dentures which is nearly $ 5,000.00 ! So IF you still have some teeth you'll get a cleaning once a year for $ 130.00. This is what they call " helping " us. Any supplements like GIS are not nearly enough for us to survive on and inflation has far surpassed anything they give us. The bottom line is that they simply live in their own rich realities, and are completely out of touch with ours ! We'll be voting PC for sure in 2025 !
The housing crisis has been ongoing for over 30 years. They don’t recognize the problem and the poverty people are living in. I have criminal injuries for many years. I have had no help from the government at any level. I see more and more people homeless and living in cars and vans. Thanks for sharing.
It’s too bad that we all can’t explain our individual stories. Thanks for sharing. I was in my car all winter with less than a full ODSP check. I don’t have any disability but are all criminal injuries. They won’t review my case and will not except my request for a full review.
I have experience the same not getting any help when I was forced to moved out of my apartment due to rent was to high as senior citizen I turned to government assistance it was if I ran into a brick wall I still don't have a place of my own after living in and out of my car for 6 months everywhere I turned for help doors were closed in my face we call this living in America working over half of my life never thought I would end being without a place of my own basically homeless who's looking out for the homeless seniors citizen when you're on a fixed income
You are so immature. There is no Jesus who's going to come down and bless the country so that there is no more homeleness...its been around for over a century. Time to grow up, face the cold hard truths of the world offline.
yes it will keep getting even worst ....nothing is going to change regardless who is your new Prime minister .....the best thing to do is buy van and live in it ....its lot cheaper !
Unfortunately I am 78, 4 time Lung Cancer Survivor, and is in the same predicament. I'm living from one state to another and from house to house. My health is deteriorating because of homelessness. I get very angry knowing how I've worked and retired all these years and the government is doing nothing about it. We're still having to pay taxes and they cannot help their own people but rush to help others. That's fine but at least take care of your own. TICKED!!!! And HURT!
88 yrs old and disabled . We struggled and did without to raise you and your family so you can live in luxury while you travel and vacation and live in big houses you put us out on the street. Not getting my vote anymore. Where is the tax money going? Where is the construction for low income that are forced to live on SS. You build Ivory towers but forget a small warm cozy affordable apartment.
I am over 60 an I made sure I bought and paid off a mortgage when I was stiil relatively young including clearing up all debt by the time I retiresd. Dont rent when you a elderly. Women at this age make the mistake of relying on thier husbands to handle the money problems only to find out they they didn't when they hit 70 +. I had a friend like that.. Now she is struggling and her husband who is dead
@@williamterrymasters1934 William, I have following your comments in many places. You are a verry mixed up person. I recommend you study a Bible and get rid of your confusion and useless comments.
I live in the K-W region. Its no different here ! Terrible shortage of housing for low income people ! I know because I've been looking for five years now to no avail. CPP and OAS are impossible to live on !
That's a big problem too. At one time you were able to move out of the city for affordable housing elsewhere, outside of the city, but its just as expensive outside as it is in.
Does the disabled son get any benefits ? If that can be raised then maybe they can live in the same place or was it sold and they have to get a new place ?
No help from public service or senior services. Don't waist your time. Where are the politicians on this problem? They talk big to get elected then do nothing. Get out there and reduce those rents in the luxury buildings and also offer assistance to fill the empty independent rooms in all those expensive assisted living places that only the wealthy can afford.
She has a disabled son who lives with her, that's why 2-bedroom. I'm sure if she has family and they can help, that they are. Your comment is heartless, muster some compassion if possible.
