When it comes to self-disclosure in our clinical work, it can be critical to weigh very carefully just how and when we use it . . .
. . . especially in cases where a client relays an experience that bumps up against a painful or overwhelming experience, we may have had ourselves.
But according to Ray Rodriguez, LCSW-R there’s a sensorimotor approach that can help guide you, if or when such circumstances arise.

When I was in school for MSW we were taught to relinquish clients who had issues similar to those we ourselves had. ?

I can see the reasoning. Seems like you would want to consult and carefully weigh the specific circumstances while being realistic about your current state.

I always felt more understood and validated when my therapist was willing to share a similar experience. It didn’t happen often, but if I was particularly upset, one might share. The voice of someone who has experienced similar things is much stronger than a voice who has no idea but wants to tell me how to cope. That’s why support groups are so effective also.

During my own work with various therapists, I always felt an unwelcome distance with those who solely relied on the "literature" rather than lived experience in our work together. Those who could let me know, appropriately, skillfully, and with professionalism that they could relate to my experience provided much more satisfying outcomes than those who didn't.

How disappointing that identity isn't a monolith except when it's convenient for it to be. Imagine thinking that color or sexuality means you have the same experiences.

@@loverainthunder Identity is a multifactor perception of self comprised of individual experiences, values, and contexts, many of which may or may not be similar or dissimilar to those in particular social categories. Defining identity by social group label is limiting and anemic, and is used only to vie for primacy in social oppression narratives. That is how identity works by definition and in contemporary practice.
