Do you know your max heart rate? How do you set your heart rate zones? Do you follow the MAF Method?
A Serious Runner discusses heart rate training for running, calculating max HR, heart rate variability (HRV), the Maffetone Method, and everything else runners need to know, whether you're training for a 5K, 10K, or marathon.

True story: my doctor was concerned about my abnormally low heart rate of 42. I had to tell that nerd it was due to being a serious runner and I wasn't dying or anything. I got to mention my superior cardiac fitness while also dunking on a doctor so that's a double humble brag.

When I was a freshman in college, I had to get an endoscopy. Thinking that they would put me under, I stayed up pretty late thinking that I'd just sleep during, anyway. Not only did they not want to put me under while sticking a camera down my throat, but every time my pulse went under 50, they'd wake me up. Eventually, they let me sleep.

If I used HR training I would be walking the whole time! Luckily we all know the Garmin's HR is not accurate. Also if I used the recovery advice I would only run 2 or 3 times a week! Even though it tells me my training is productive my VO2 mas won't budge. I swear I don't feel that bad when it tells me I'm over reaching. I have no interest in getting a chest strap because I just don't want to stress about numbers. I've got enough to think about 🤔

😂 220 - age is accurate for very few people. I should have a max of 178 and I hit that regularly in races and speedwork. But I do pore over HR data so I kinda fit the parody 🤷🏼‍♀️ I will say the watch is fairly accurate, I used to use a strap and the values are similar.
@julianking6603

Doesn't a serious runner use a chest strap though? I mean you can't be 100% sure that you're inaccurate if you don't have one.

If I don’t spend at least as many hours a week poring over unreliable data as I do running, what would I do with all of that free time? Read? Learn a new skill? Spend time with loved ones? What a waste! Once the HR data is exhausted I have to delve into equally unreliable Stryd power numbers. That takes at least 3 hours a week!

Perfect 👍 the numbers other that the time of day and sometimes pace are pretty much suspect if not outright junk - other than marketing bullet points the majority of “data” isn’t that reliable or practical. I am currently training for Boston using a Timex - guess Iam not that “serious” 😆👍🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Heart rate variability should be measured once a day at the same time. Most people do it in the morning. Don't do it several times a day, that will mess up things. How will you be able to compare your data? . Another thing to worry about :-)
