Wonderful breed.

I have a Turkish stamp from the 70's of a fine dog on blue background which some modern breed enthusiasts would call a Kangal. However at the bottom of that stamp it says Coban kopegi, meaning shepherd dog. The term Kangal seems to be a more recent name of a colour and type which some years ago was called Karabash (black head). Shepherds are more interested in functionality of their sheep guardians than their colour wheras pedigree dog breeders would differ and be more specific. So in my opinion Kangals are actually Anatolian shepherd dogs (from Kangal/Sivas region of Turkey) but not all Anatolian shepherds could be called Kangals.

I have owned many mastiffs and terrier breeds. These dogs are special. the most gentle and well mannered who at the drop of a dime can turn into a killing machine. Super intelligent. They dont need a farm but do need companionship and a job. LISTEN WELL..... Given the choice, this dog would rather be outside with other dogs or livestock. Do not get this dog as a only apartment dog.

These are not Kangals. Nat Geo has it right…the muzzle, head shape, and eyes are all Anatolian Shepherd (not to mention, body line). The dogs pictured have extended flews, bigger/rounder eyes, longer spines, and the wrong head shape. However, I would not be surprised if they had Kangal DNA cause these rural sheep herders care less about purity and more about workability.

But a wolf was pretty important animal in Turkish Mythology. Now it is predator for they. Life is interesting.

Even the Turkish people on here can't tell if it's a kangal or Anatolian shephard. Basically it's the same dog. The kangals in videos on you tube and tick tok are so called kangals. But they have breed anatolian shephards with Askeray Maliliki. All anatolian shephards are LUPO-MOSSELOIDS, meaning they are there own breed. No other breeds where mated with other dogs to get a Anatolian shephard. Job in bible had lots of them.they are very, very old. They are a real pure breed of dog. And dogs are not descended from wolves. Wolves are true carnivores, like a cat. A dog is a OMNIVORE, more plant matter than meat. They can live without eating animal protein if they had too. Turkish shephard dogs are the best on this planet, they will fight to the death.
