The Sign of Four, sometimes known as The Sign of the Four is one of four novels featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. A young woman, Mary Morstan, has been receiving pearls in the post for several years, but more than that, her father is missing and she seeks the aid of the famous Baker Street consulting detective. This is one of four novels by Conan Doyle and was first published in 1890.
I cannot account for my decision to give one of the main characters a slightly dodgy Australian accent. Perhaps he came across some Aussies, and it rubbed off on him - as the saying goes. As I say, an inexplicable choice.
It is narrated by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.

What thoroughly amazes me is that this entire video seems to have no ads anywhere in between. You are already incredibly generous to place these readings online for free. But to give the listener an uninterrupted experience is amazingly altruistic.

Especially the long ones. Anything over 30 seconds is just redundant. I have not bought products simply because of the way they choose to place lengthy ads for thing people need no push to buy. I honestly believe 70% of most ad agency's push are unnecessary except to show for the exorbitant amount they are charging the company they were hired by to help with advertising.

Hats off & a round of hurrahs & 3 cheers to Mr Wagland! Ive never enjoyed such a marathon listening in one go & im throughly entertained & Happy! I love my Sherlock stories & id honestly never heard this one before so it was all brand new For me & My Goodness! What a treat it was ! You did a perfect narration No slip ups, wrong pronunciations, superb diction And, i was hard put to keep from thinking there was an actual Cast of players/actors in this Story That to me is the mark of true professionalism when a single narrator is so good at voice acting that you dont question There is only a single voice but a proper cast. Wonderful seemless transitions from Dr Watson to the enigmatic Sherlock to Inspector Jones & the wonderfully eccentric Thaddeus Sholto ( i hope i got the right twin ) to the good hearted sweet Mary soon to be Mrs Watson...ahhh What Bliss, ive enjoyed every minute so i thank you most Sincerely, Mr Wagland

Perfectly wonderful! What a fine mixture of suspense, love (just the right amount: very little) and adventure, seasoned by some very good Holmesisms. And, truly Mr. Wagland, you are the perfect Holmes as well as Watson, let alone your fluffy inspectors. I also found the Aussie-accent very fitting, for the man had been a convict somewhere down there in far away exotic straits for many years, and thus, you made him sound like it. Most impressive. Thank you very much!

I speak English but I am still learning and love Sherlock Holmes books. You kind sir, have such a beautiful voice and I love how you narrate the story, the way how you change the voice to embody each character amazes me and I understand every word you say because your accent is very clear and nice. Thank you, I really enjoyed this narrative.

Excellent read, what a wonderful surprise! Thank you, you've made spring cleaning a much lighter affair as I was able to listen to these immortal stories read impeccably while kneeling down to rub something!

Oo er, missus 😀 Glad it helped with the spring cleaning. I share the views of one Quentin Crisp on cleaning however - well maybe not quite that bad !!! Cheers ☺️

One cannot multitask - either one does a thing or one does it not. To grasp the text, you should read (a digital copy of) the book while you hear Greg Wagland's readings.

Another excellent job in which the listener is thrust into the world of Holmes & Watson & the cast of characters. Ironically, as much as I enjoy the varied radio show content with several actors (including Rathbone & Bruce), I always return to Greg’s one-man narration for his VARIETY of character voices! ACDoyle’s work got me wondering about the factual basis for it. So, there was a harsh British penal colony set up in the Andaman (Ross) Islands- lasting until WWII. Currently part of India, some of the remaining inhabitants live a primitive existence fiercely resisting all contact with outsiders by means of knives, bows, & arrows. Several intruders, trespassers, an escaped convict, a missionary, & unfortunate shipwrecks have all been attacked & some killed. One of the few pictures- by helicopter- is of a tribesman aiming a bow at the craft! For protection against unwelcome visitors & European diseases, Sentinel Island is today “forbidden” with a five nautical mile (9.2 km) exclusion area enforced by the Indian coast guard. Contact has been so limited that their language is unknown and the census (by air) is several hundred, but could range from 15 to 500. In the few contacts, gift live pigs were lance with arrows and buried on the sand beach; visitors were signaled to leave by islanders turning their haunches as if to defecate, making cutting motions with their knives, then picking up bows & arrows!- “Everything We Know About the Very Isolated North Sentinelese People of North Sentinelese Island” [Fortune magazine, 2018]

I did not expect to hear that accent at 1:06:35. That was pretty darn good. Especially after having only heard the Study in Scarlet from you before, so only getting heavy British accents when reading as other characters. That was a very pleasant surprise =D

Not only no commercial interruptions but the addition of subtitles for listeners learning English and listeners whose hearing may not be fully up to the challenge.

You outdid yourself! Once I am begun I am hopelessly focused to the finish. For reading was my consuming activity, but old eyes enjoy an audio from time to time. BTW it was quite helpful to have each segment and time listed. Thank you.

A man who smokes that much has to be cutting up with some of Amsterdam's finest or my name isn't Twotson. "Grab the Baccy and the weed Watson, we're retiring upstairs to smoke! Because this, my dear Watson, is a two spliff problem!" "Should I bring the skag as well?" "I should cocoa!" "What was that Holmes? The coke too?"
