In this new series in collaboration with The Nest Collective, we explore the stories behind traditional English folk songs that have connections to historic places.
We've paired this song, whose lyrics speak of a long history of naval friction on the English Channel, with Dover Castle, or as one 19th century writer called it, "historic, cliff-guarded, castle-crowned Dover." This majestic fortress is one of the country's grandest and best-preserved and represents a broad cross-section of England's varied history. From the Roman lighthouse to the tunnels utilised by British forces during the dramatic evacuation of Dunkirk in May 1940, Dover has stood sentinel over centuries of change and many a battle.
Presented by Sam Lee and Matt Thompson.
Written and Directed by Max O'Brien.
A Ship to Old England Came, Performed by Mara Carlyle.
Original Music Composed by Christopher Schlechte-Bond.
Music Direction by Thom Ashworth.
Produced by Nathalie Blue and Jamie Bellinger.
Title Lettering by Alan Kitching.

Interesting how you guys think of England as a separate entity. Americans would never talk that way about say, Delaware for instance...

Whahahaha, if there is one thing ALL Americans do when they introduce themself to someone is saying: I'm (fill in a name), from (fill in name of city and state)!

@@judy-angedv7590 Well, yeah, but Idaho doesn't have it's own RU-vid History Channel for instance, and hire people to sing famous Idaho songs...

@@penultimateh766 Well that's a shame really, I bet you as a state have a fascinating history of your own, apart from being part of a greater entity. I don't know anything about Idaho, being from The Netherlands, but I would gladly fill the void. I love folk music and local history.

@@gideonroos1188 Seems like semantics. If they were truly independent, they'd have one person for each country in Parliament. Like countries in the UN. Plus you share military. police, NHS. Where's the independence?

Ah, fascinating actually, thank you! I had indeed heard that the supreme court was new. What fulfilled that function previously? Was there a court of final appeal in each nation?
