Great short story. There are many lessons to be learned here. My takeaway is that fixating on material possessions will cost you opportunities to connect with others, grow as a person, experience new things, and become the best version of yourself. In addition, the materials you focus so hard to obtain, don't impress others in the way you think they will. Perhaps the shallow people will be impressed, but then why would you be interested in befriending these people anyway? This story is a reminder to myself that I need to focus more on human connection and the experiences of life, rather than the anticipated joy that materials will bring. Thanks for sharing.

This would be a great children's book. Short and full of meaning

I believe the core lesson of this short story is that you have to give some unnecessary/unhelpful things up in order to move on with your life and attain success and greater meaning, otherwise those things become a burden and consume you. If you want to become a doctor, you better give up playing video games 8 hours a day otherwise you won't have enough time to study. If you want to grow up and become and independent adult, you have to get your 28-year-old ass out of your parents' house and get a place of your own.

One of our biggest cultural problems today (I believe) is the spread of the Peter Pan syndrome to the point that it has become a visible detriment in many areas. We have increasingly vauled protecting the "sanctity" of childhood (which started for decent enough reasons I am sure) and it has snowballed over the generations, in both prolonging it's duration and sterilizing it. We have fetishized childhood now, and made it a place that people both no longer wish to nor are capable of escaping.
