Sacrifice of the self for the survival of the group requires abstract thinking, and I'm not sure most dogs are capable of that. (Many humans aren't capable of it, either.) I don't know enough about the mind of the dog to speak with confidence about what they would or wouldn't do in an unusual situation. Any suggestions for sources on the topic? I know military dogs might, but household pets?
