Ever acted in a way that you didn't really want to? Or had a specific thought that didn't fit the situation? Or didn't know what to do in that situation?
Me personally, very very often and that is where Bryan Johnson's trick actually comes into play: It's about creating different identities for yourself and then stepping into the right one at the right time!
Which Identities do I need?
1) Define your main Goals in life.
2) Ask yourself:
- How would I need to become in order to make the achievement of that Goal inevitable (character traits)
- What would need to be true, in order for me to become that way (believes)
3) Knowing the identity and believes you would need to have, you have two choices:
- Do like Bryan and have many different identities, one for each specific situation (entrepreneur, friend, student, evening routine...)
- Do like I do and have two Identities: the one you don't want to be like and your ideal self (v.1.0 and v.2.0).
How do I actually become like that?
1) By being as aware as possible during the day.
2) By detaching from your identity (be the OBSERVER of your thoughts, actions and feelings)
3) Catch yourself, when acting in a suboptimal way
4) Ask yourself:
- What would he (ideal) do?
- What would he think?
- How would he feel?
5) Ruthlessly be that way!
Key TRICK: Don't see your ideal as a goal, see it as your standard. It's the lowest thing you can accept!
Like Bruce Lee said: we should be fluid, formless, shapeless, just like water. That is how we achieve our goals: by adapting to the identity that makes the achievement of that goal inevitable. By being fluid!
