Pianist here, I really appreciate these videos because sometimes it's hard to conceptualize rhythms like these. I always like to be able to tap out please subdivisions so that I can play them in my life. I just could not conceptualize quintuplet this definitely helped me.
Thanks for the vid. I was doing my normal morning warmup doing single stick quintuplets and switching to double stroke quintuplets (the way you play them) and back. I got the urge to watch someone else do them & found your video.
I like odd groupings of five 16th notes. And, three 16ths. But not even Zappa did groupings of seven 16ths. 5, or 7 over 2 or three quarter note polyrythems was a 70's Zappa thing. The the fun is in hearing the hemiola sinc back up in your head intuitively so you can use your body to make it groove.
Quintuplets are unexplored territory for American drummers. Check out "Ghajana - Patri Satish Kumar" or the videos of Manjunath B.C. to hear how quintuplets are used in the context of Carnatic percussion beautifully
Guitarist; We just wanted our drummer to play a James Brown tune and he started involuntarily metrically modulating. Having just graduated from Berkley. Haha.
Nathaniel Smith Just subbed to you, Nate. I'm a New York drummer in L.A. Grew up going to the 55Bar catching Wayne, Keith, Tim, Donny, Mark, Dave Binney, Dan Weiss, etc since 1996 with Wayne. My all time favorite venue The 55 Bar. Great, channel, great feel, nice minimalism, Nate!
+twelge15 yea best show in recent memory was nate wood with Wayne. I caught some ringers back in the early 2000s tho: binney/Potter/taborn/rogers/blade . Butcher brown’s been bringing it lately, (even though they’re not 55 mainstays) yes?
Cool thoughtful way to break the 5s over 4 here, interested to see your break down of 7s over 4 now. Also the Chris Dave 6 over 4s follow up vid will be legendary 😜🥁🎶
For an actual usage of this idea, listen to 'The Beast' by The Odd Dogs. The quintuplet note value is the main subdivision of the beat and where the bass is playing groups of 4 on the quintuplet against the drums playing groups of 5. Also, the drum part during the second guitar solo chorus also expresses groups of 4 in the ride cymbal. There are ways to make the use of quintuplets useful and musical without freaking the listener out.
If you can say electricity or, university over a crotchet (quarter note) you can play a quintuplet (1 te ta te ta ). Sextuplets responsibility ( 1 triplet & triplet).Septuplets , Irresponsibility ( 1 te ta te ta te ta) .
