Blood-sucking villains. Spooky specters of the night. Our views of bats are often based more on fiction than fact. Enter National Geographic Explorer at Large Rodrigo Medellín, aka the Bat Man of Mexico. For decades he’s waged a charm offensive to show the world how much we need bats, from the clothes we wear to a sip of tequila at the end of a long day. Now, as the COVID-19 pandemic causes even more harmful bat myths, the world must once again realize that bats may not be the hero everyone wants-but they’re the hero we need.

Love bats. HATE GAIN OF FUNCTION RESEARCH.
@katieann9026

Gain of function research a) didn't lead to a covid outbreak, pangolin markets did, and b) helps to identify and prepare for potential pandemic causing pathogens. It is controversial, but the common moron claiming to hate it is just spouting off on some Rand Paul inspired nonsense without actually knowing what they're talking about. No, it did not cause the pandemic.

Fun fact: Vald the Impaler is actually a national hero in Romania because back in the day, Romania(Wallachia in specific) was being used by Hungary and the Ottoman Empire as a one way "bridge", so that they themselves can invade the other through Romania but the other can't. They were trying to make their own guys rule the place and his father was held hostage in Hungary, and made to rule Wallachia and then they were captured by the Ottomans, and Vlad was held hostage by the Ottomans, and yeah. And because they were team Ottoman now(forcefully, but still), his father was killed by the Hungarians. He impaled, there was no other choice. Both Hungary and Ottomans were too powerful; scaring away enemies by impaling was the only possible defence. I don't know if these history stuff is in the video, but I'm too impatient to find it out, so I'll comment anyway.

Bats are amazing creatures. How do they fly? They are not birds, but mammals.

the lack of insects due to pesticides is is likely starving and killing a lot of bats too. There used to be So Many insects in summers here in the UK 30 to 40 years ago, even more in my parents generation. Now it is rare to see butterflies for example.
