They want to get it cancelled because it doesn't fit the "agenda". It's a truly great game AND it's apolitical, and these envious jerks want to tear it down because they can't handle excellent things flourishing without their approval.
My money is on Game Science working hand in hand WITH IGN to try and drum up controversy. I mean, we've seen the results from EVERY.... SINGLE....TIME people try to boycott or cancel a game. That result? More sales for that game.
@@Norcat10And sky is blue And Nestle is evil MF And Garten of banban is disgrace of mascot horror. It's been said before and it can be said again. IGN is bad. That's the fact, not original but Facts.
There're two misunderstandings: first, 'getting licked' means being flattered in Chinese, so this post by the creator from the studio has nothing to do with sex. What it really means is basically He want to hire more people but too many people want to be hired so they flatter him too much and he can't get used to it. Second, the translation of the snake spirit is correct by IGN as '冲' does mean jerk off nowadays (though originally it does not, this is why GPT translate it the other way). But this pic has nothing to do with the studio as It's a post on a forum called Zhihu by some random guys.
That sentence does express the meaning of being flattered, but it does use a more vulgar metaphor (licking, erection), but for Feng Ji, "erection inability" in addition to being flattered, it also means that he feels the market's great expectation puts him under great pressure.
Basically getting harassed by wokes on twitter because he used some crude slang like say, "people keep fucking with me" or "you really suck at this" Oh and for the snake lady it was something like : "if you cover the lower snake body she's fappable" How could a young male gamer dev in his twenties say something so horrible...!
I remember watching the reveal about half a decade ago and I was certain it was fake. Then more and more footage just kept coming out now I can't believe we are almost at release
@@huricanethreeonesix I remember when a teaser was released for this game and the only reason why I believed it was legit was because Maximilian Dood noticed that when Wukong was fighting all those soldiers the FPS dropped. Games don't usually show FPS drops, especially fake ones, so when that happened people started believing that the game is real.
I was looking forward to it as well, until I found out it was just a boss rush game. I love bosses in souls-like games don’t get me wrong, but I’m not interested in ONLY fighting bosses.
someone told me this about the company logo: "Because the Chinese abbreviation for "game science" is "游科" (yóu kē), it sounds similar to "游蝌" (yóu kē) which means "swimming tadpoles" when read in Chinese. The humorous play on words comes from the fact that the pronunciation of "游科" (yóu kē, for game science) is nearly identical to "游蝌" (yóu kē, swimming tadpoles) in Chinese. So when someone says "游科", it evokes a silly imagery of frolicking with tadpoles. Using the English approximation "Yo-kuh" for the Chinese "游科" highlights this delightful linguistic ambiguity that arises from reading the tonal Chinese language, capturing the entertaining double meaning."
Dont overcomplicate things. Chinese has a nick of habit to shuffle on words. Go look at their local shops. Also it serves a purpose so that they can avoid duplicate trademarks (or sue the actual brand, like they did with Air Jordan)
As early as July 2021, someone asked the chief game graphic designer Yang Qi on Weibo what the LOGO meant. Yang Qi had already answered at that time that it meant lightning hitting an atom.
well, the official story I've heard is that lightning strikes atoms, and swimming tadpoles is more of a player-to-player rumor (although it does sound plausible)
Takes me back to late middle school/early HS when I was obsessed with Wukong and started wondering if there were any Wukong games out there. Image my shock when the first thing I saw was this!
I picked up a copy of Monkey Folk Tale of China which is a very streamlined version of Journey to the West with only certain chapters but it’s still awesome
As a Chinese player, I want to clarify some parts of the video. Firstly, regarding the company name and logo: The company is called Game Science. While the logo might appear misleading and resemble a sperm, the company explained in a 2021 interview with Chinese media that the logo represents an atom being struck by lightning. It's that simple. The comment suggesting that the Chinese abbreviation for "Game Science" ("游科" yóu kē) sounds like "游蝌" (yóu kē), meaning "swimming tadpole," is just a playful term used by players. It's not an official name given by the company. Secondly, about the signboard advertising: There's no denying that the Chinese player Luke quotes in the video is correct. Their recruitment advertisements are indeed vulgar, but that doesn't mean they are sexist. Next, they accused the game art director, Yang Qi, of calling for no female players. This is completely taken out of context. When quoting his statement, you must consider the development context of the Chinese game industry. At that time, and even now, many character designs in Chinese games aesthetically pursued "白幼瘦" mindlessly("白幼瘦" means having white skin, a youthful appearance, and a slender body.). This applies not only to female characters but also to male characters in many game companies. It's absurd, right? Imagine if Kratos were a slender, fair-skinned man. Imagine if Arthur Morgan looked like an idol. It doesn't fit their story backgrounds at all, does it? This is precisely what the game art director was trying to convey. We shouldn't pursue this kind of aesthetic because it makes men not look like men. We need to create something that truly embodies masculinity. Do you think that's sexist? At least, I don't think so. Parts of the content as above are through the translation software. If there is something unclear to the READER, I can explain further.
Totally agreed. As an Indian I can say that China and Chinese studios are gonna be at the forefront of AAA game industry in the coming years. They deserve respect, not mocking.
@@Rising._.ThunderI won't say that. Considering the amount of blatant rip off, they have I don't think the Chinese deserve that much respect. This studio definitely does though Aside: I don't think AAA/mobile studios deserves respect in the first place. The amount of micro transactions mechanics is sickening
I appreciate you doing your own research on that ign article and not just taking it at face value. Especially when it comes to translating. American's think every word they translate is literal just like the english language when in reality foreign languages are waaaaaay more complex with their words and can be translated many different ways.
It's especially perilous to translate between a glyph based language to a character based language. These Chinese glyphs each represents whole words and even phrases, unlike character based languages such as English where words are made up by individual distinct letters.
Allow me to give you an example. In Chinese, "Zhe shi she me?" when translated literally into English, would be "This is what?" Yes, when literally translated, the phrase is in broken sounding English, whereas the grammatically correct translation would be "What is this?" This makes it incredibly easy to either unintentionally or maliciously mistranslate and misinterpret the Chinese language, for a wide variety of reasons.
@@acherontiaatropos6048 Yeah, but in significantly different ways. It's like asking a professional baker to cook and serve ratatouille. Baking isn't easy by any means, but making something like ratatouille is difficult in a completely different way and has a completely different skill set attached to it.
@@jmo8192 Sure, but what is weird grammar to English speakers is just normal grammar to Chinese speakers and vice versa. All languages have grammatical differences, idioms, puns, etc. that don't make sense in another language if you try to translate word for word. Somewhere out there are Chinese people saying how complex English is because it's only half-phonetic so you pretty much have to memorize how every word is spelled and our grammar and idioms sound exotic or nonsensical to them.
I have no idea how IGN even has a say in anything at this point. They lost credibility many years ago - who is giving them the attention so that they stay relevant? Luke, it’s really simple and not that bizarre, the writer is actually the racist one. It really isn’t complicated.
This game has probably the most beautiful postprocessing in any game to date. The particle effects, motion blur, DoF... not to mention the animation fluidity, lumen, nanite, VSMs,.. it's a feast for the eyes. Truly amazing use of UE5's features. 😲 It's so dense with detail that anyone on RU-vid who doesn't know how to properly record and process videos to minimize compression artifacts is doing this game a disservice.
I think Rise of the Ronin showed you can get a skill heavy game and make it accessible enough. If that is not replicated widely then Souls types deserve to remain AA

23:30 it's a tadpole, aka young frog. In chinese the short name of Game Science (游戏科学) is 游科, which has the exact same pronunciation of "游蝌", meanning "swimming tadpole", and hence the tadpole logo, it's just a pun
So about the content between boss fights, there is more info in Chinese community. Those who got invited to play said that the maps are separate by storyline, and each chapter may have slightly different map designs, some is more linear and some is more open world. For the latest 2-hour demo, they say the map is like 3 big areas, each has several branches, and on each branch route there maybe some elite monsters, or quests, collecting job, these kind of stuff, and you can get things like armors, new transformation, new magic acctaks, making the map final boss relatively easier. Or you can just ignore the branches and rush to the final boss
Worst case scenario the game studio was having a bit of cheecky fun and decided to make the logo look like sperm. Best case scenario when designing the logo the deves accidentally miss drew a lighting bolt or a projectile . Either way WHO THE HELL CARES. This game speaks for it self and Game Science should be very proud of the work they have produced. Also, if you are really getting butt hurt over a logo then I feel bad for you because I cant imagine how you are reacting to other things in the world that are FAR WORSE then this.
@@Astristul Why do you say that? I don't care if it is a souls like or not, it just looks fun...I get a bit of a Nioh combat vibe from looking at it though...
Well, just look at Hogwarts Legacy and Stellar Blade. Both game studios had only made mobile games previously, and when they attempted to make AAA console games, they absolutely blew it out of the park, and there wasn't a single microtransaction in sight for either game. So let's hope that it's the same case for this studio with this promising looking game that I for one am absolutely looking forward to playing and can't wait to get my hands on!
And now that studio that mad3 hogwarts legacy is doing liv3 service and leaving that game so they didn't do anything that great with it. Game was mediocre
Shift Up, the developers of Stellar Blade, are also a mobile games company who made their console debut and that was a success, which makes me hopeful that this will be a similar situation if not better
The Korean Round8 and Neowiz were also mobile game devs but Lies of P was just an incredible first effort. Serviceable lore, polished gameplay, good level design and even the voice acting and the OST were pretty amazing IMO. Oh and it runs amazing. My FPS usually hovered around 150-170 FPS at 1440p with an RX 6900 XT. Which is crazy when Steel Rising could barely hit 80 on my system.
Stellar blade is alright, but I don't like shift up as an organisation due to their extreme unethical working enviroments, my gf worked there as administrator and she told me women over there are absolutely exploited and patronised. So when that stellar blade controversy came along I knew it had many slivers of truth.
This seems to be turning into the path for indie dev companies to become AAA studios: Step 1. Make tons of money selling mobile games Step 2. Use that money to fund your AAA amazing PC/console game without having to answer to a publisher There are 3 examples of this happening now: - Lies of P (more AA) - Stellar Blade - Black Myth Wu Kong
I'm kinda shocked. What else is there to discuss about that game that haven't been said already? And for eight hours to boot. I guess some people just don't value their time all that much.

Each to their own, the difference in quality is most certainly clear to see, though. Its funny how the more subscribers a channel gets the worse they become.
I definitely see it being more like God of War than a souls game. A lot of dark fantasy games with a roll button are instantly going to be incorrectly labelled souls games now I reckon.

Listen you can make the argument that as a Chinese developer they should not be supported due to heavy ties to the government which is practically a dictatorship and they rule by fear and class divides, However I’m of the mindset that people should enjoy a game no matter where it’s made. If it looks and feels fun to play, then what’s the issue
What a lot will not know, is how draped in chinese fantasy this game is. The monkey king i first came across in the 70's with the tv series monkey magic, and capcoms 'sonson' in the arcade from 1984. This is deep into chinese fantasy lore as you will ever get. Ign are living up to the name 'ignorant'
Dragon Ball was my first introduction to journey to the west... Hearing what it was based off got me interested, Now there is a video game adaptation of that same folk lore that Akira Toriyama (R.I.P) used for inspiration. Im invested and it looks good.
Gamescience’s logo looks like a swimming tadpole. Gamescience’s Chinese name is 游戏科学 and the Chinese usually shortened it as 游科。游科 sounds similar to 游蝌(swimming tadpole). That’s where their logo comes from, I think (read it from somewhere).
@knightjoker6142 I think he just wanted to make the creative idea for the company logo sound more high-end, so he made up the statement that lightning struck the atom.
I'm currently playing Wo Long because I'm new to Souls games. I'm enjoying it a lot, mainly because I love the Romance of the 3 kingdoms stories. Almost as much as I love Journey to the West and Wukong. I'm looking forward to playing this game!
The version currently played by game media is a specially designed version. removed many things, such as NPC, tasks, and so on. This is a response received by the gaming media.
This one won't have super complicated level design. The devs literally said they don't want to make the levels a maze, with a lot of doors that won't open from this side, because they don't want to ruin the JOURNEY to the West. I think they are aiming for a story-driven linear level design like God of War.
@@rayxxx8187 Honestly, hearing that just increased my hype for this game even more. Open world and maze-like designs are so boring and overdone at this point. Give me a DMC or Ninja Gaiden style experience where I go through levels with tight pacing and zero wasted time.
1. According to the information currently available, overall, this is a linear game (a linear story). Of course, between boss battles, there will be many RPG elements, such as items, equipment, upgrades, skill tree, side quests, mini bosses, hidden rewards, etc. It is likely that the game is level-based, each level will have branching paths and secrets to explore. There are regular enemies, and they will respawn like in Soulslike games, but compared to bosses, they are less difficult. Challenging Boss fights are the focus of the game. The graphics are super realistic, but there is no in game map, you can easily get lost, just like in a real jungle. Some players may consider this a bad design. Because if you ignore or miss those cultivation and exploration mechanisms, you may miss some important skills/weapons or some necessary growth, and the boss battle will become even more difficult. Or maybe others like it, we can't draw a conclusion yet. 2. On the surface, IGN's translation is not without basis, if you insist on interpreting it that way. However, many people have explained -> What the developer said is actually some common Chinese Internet slang that everyone uses. Some of the words may have some sexual connotations in real life slang at the beginning, but gradually they have become regular expressions on the Internet, and do not contain any special discriminatory meanings. Chinese language is very context-dependent. In real life, you can't just take the words literally. Well, I guess this is true for any language, especially in informal situations, such as on social media. The developer said a lot of things in his post ten years ago, and he was indeed criticizing some things, such as the gaming environment in China at that time. But in the IGN article, they only picked one sentence, distorted its meaning without considering the context, and drew a conclusion they wanted. I don't know why they are so shameless. Maybe because they're just plain stupid, maybe because they didn't get any $$$ from Game Science, or maybe they just hate China/Chinese. Sadly, we are living in a weird world.
I read articles from Chinese gaming journalism that this game seems to go all-out on the bosses, this game has more than 100 uniquely designed and fun boss encounters. But very little side activities to do between the boss fights.
Disappointing but understandable as there's a decent market for that style. Probably pass on it personally, souls likes are not my thing. Hope it turns out great for those that are though.
We Chinese players and the video maker who played the game demo for two and a half hours speculated that the reason for the large amount of guesses is that the game is based on the eighty-one tribulations of a mythological story, so there are many big and small BOSSes, and the map exploration is to reduce the difficulty of fighting the BOSS. There was very little exploration in the trial play, but the amount of map exploration content is kept very secret by the official. It is speculated that the amount of exploration in the later stage will be very large, mainly to prevent spoilers for Chinese players, so there are very few places to go. Because the number of Chinese players is too large, there will always be people who have thoroughly studied the geographical location of Journey to the West.
"But very little side activities to do between the boss fights." Don't be worry, the GS staff claims the real game won't be like this. (but I'm not sure about the design quality)
Whoever wrote that article at IGN was either incredibly desperate or had a serious grudge. Either way, their post was not professional, and they deserve to be punished for it.
Last time a game came from "a relatively unknown Studio" known more for "mobile gaming", we got Stellar Blade which is BY FAR 2024's Game of the Year. A game that came out complete, with barely to no bugs, beautiful graphics and even better character designs, and no micro-transaction whatsoever. So I'm WAY more inclined to give the devs of Black Myth Wukong a chance, than I am to give any more chances to anything out of garbage "AAA" Studios like Ubisloth or Woketivision Blizzard.
Supposedly it was because they didn’t want to pay sbi a $7 million consultation fee, and sbi made ign right that article. I don’t know if that’s true, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

I agree. Personally I think there is, but they're not showing it so despite all they've revealed, there's still surprises and things no one has seen. Hopefully.
I think the biggest concern would really be performance, because nowhere in their required specs did they say what framerate they were targeting and they did state that those tests were done with dlss and upscaling So we don't really know what exactly they're targeting, and obviously gameplay demos are not going to show a full picture of that aspect especially since they all have really high-end machines for those But I am very excited
The PC requirements were released a while back. I still would love to know the PC specifications that the demos are running on? I'm excited to test this on my PC and I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of Blackwell.
I'm definitely going to try this game out when it's available physically to own. Game journalists like IGN don't like Wukong because the developers turned down SBI and didn't want to involve them.
There are some outlets that have done 4k captures that look good, VGC comes to mind. But IGN’s captures are almost always really poor quality. Idk why…
It's totally a lightning bolt hitting you in one testicle. I can see something that isn't there too, IGN. Every time Luke wheezes when laughing, I want to call him Luke Wheezens.
Why is IGN digging on them? Because Sweet Baby Inc asked them millions of dollars to "curate" their games to make it more "inclusive" and they refused.
People keep saying this and I'm still waiting for any proof it actually happaned. The only thing this is based on is some anonymous Chinese blogger, who nobody can verify, providing this information and the information can also not be verified.

@Zerovin No, it's not. IGN has talked negatively about the game before, people just happened to notice it now. It's like when that train with toxic chemicals derailed in Ohio a few years back, people suddenly started to see more articles about train derailings. A lot of people were convinced it was connected, but train derailings were just more common and now articles about them were getting more clicks.
Thanks for explaining the negative talk arising from the IGN article. I didn't know about that. I'm looking forward to this game's release, and will get it on PS5. I don't normally play these kinds of games but I really like the Chinese mythology and the "Journey to the West" story.
I think Xbox series s was a mistake because it is holding back developers and the Xbox series x. If this game is good, we need the Xbox boiys to support it too at launch to show devs these are the type games we like.
If it’s only boss fights that’s gonna really suck. What makes boss fights so satisfying is that build up towards it and killing waves of easier enemies and leveling up your strength to be able to defeat the boss
What he said about the snake woman thing, the word he used in the end about "if I block the bottom half of her body from view, I can still..." He used the word 冲,which literally means rush, but it's a relatively new Internet slang, meaning to do all one can to reach a good result, and to put this in the context, what he's saying is, although her face looks different than what he expected, but she's still a damsel that he's willing to doing anything to fight for
Well to be completely fair, Judging by the context, “冲” in the sentence here would be the shortened word“手冲”. which means jerk off. But who cares, people be crazy if they think this justifies canceling a whole group of hard working developers’ passion project.
Regarding the term "能冲" (néng chōng), this is actually a popular term on the Chinese internet recently. While the direct translation in the image is correct, this phrase is generally used to express affection for a certain character. It usually means that someone thinks the character is beautiful. In the context of the whole sentence, it can be understood as: "Although the snake is not what I expected, if you don't look at the lower body (only look at the head), she is indeed very beautiful." However, from what I have gathered on the Chinese internet, this sentence seems to have been posted by a fan. 😌
IGN article is an example of modern (gaming) journalism. No facts, clickbait title, full of emotions and opinions to cause certain behaviour of readers instead of presenting the information as it is and let the people to build the opinion based on the data they gained. Personally, I'm excited about Wu Kong and curious what the final game will be like. Hope it will have similar levels to Sekiro or Dark Souls series.
It's a Souls-like game, whether you like it or not. Whether the studio acknowledges it as a Souls-like or not. I hate how Chinese and Korean games are classified. They think the Souls-like genre is outdated and want to innovate
If IGN tells you not to buy a game, then it's more than likely good. If they tell you to buy a game, then research is needed to see why as they always have ulterior motives. They are not good games journalists.
Woke people in the US that have never traveled outside of the US or Europe are the worst. They don’t realize that their ideology is the minority in the world. I like that people from completely different cultures are creating big games. That’s real diversity.
The reason IGN is trying to to cancel this game might be that they rejected working with Sweet Baby Inc. for they stupid DEI scores. They are part of the global fight to force "diversity" and "inclusion" in videogames.
The IGN article apparently came after the studio rejected Sweet Baby Inc, Hit Detection, Baby Ghost and affiliates attempts at trying to get them to hire them as DEI consultants. But I'm not 100% sure if that is a fact, or if someone misreported it.
It's because Game Science wouldn't hire DEI consultants like Sweet Baby Inc. Remember how the SBI president said to scare your marketing department about the consequences of not hiring them? The IGN article was that consequence: a hit piece by a DEI ally. I realize that it's suuuuuper shocking that IGN has no journalistic integrity.
I know the reason some people are trying to tear the game down. It's bc the game is from China. That's it. That's the entirety of the reason. It's a political hit job.
Some director or something from Black Myth Wukong tweeted that sweet baby inc. was extorting them over I think 7(?) million dollars. To make their game 'inclusive' and when he told them its not the vision of his game they said they would cancel him. The IGN and kotaku shitstorm followed up.
no they didn't. the post you are referencing was a baidu post by an anti-American video game blogger who claimed a company "like" sweet baby inc tried to extort them. the claim was made without evidence or a first hand account
@@rosecity_chris Luke asked why ign was doing this weird shit, this is why this weird shit is happening. put your head in the sand and act like you better weirdo.
The biggest things that will make or break the game IMO is performance, how you progress the world/how its laid out and the exploration depth(because games like this need those little surprises and areas to find that have nothing to do with the main progression)
Those who've delved into the pages of "Journey to the West" would recognize that Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, was conceived during a spectacular display of lightning and thunder, emerging from an egg-shaped boulder at the very instant heaven and earth were sundered. Indeed, the Game Science logo is a subtle homage to that precise moment marking the birth of this legendary simian.
I'm definitely worried about the connective tissue as well. It's strange they haven't shown any of it. I'm worried they've spent all these years designing and tinkering with the boss fights and the feel of the game while not putting effort into the world and what we do in it. There's no way the game is all boss fights.
This is just another example. Can you really blame any gamer that they have nothing but scorn for IGN, Kotaku and all those other trash sites? They literally care ONLY for one thing and screw truth, integrity and honesty, screw professionalism. And they will go to absurd lengths to put EVERYTHING in context with their goals, even use false evidence, even forget any sort of professional scrutiny. But tell me, do you really ask yourself why? At this point, this isn't an isolated case, it's a method.
I don't know if it's true or not but some people say that IGN is trying to cancel this game because the studio didn't want to work with Sweet baby inc. So it's culture war BS as far as I understand it anyway.
One random coment in the chinese "facebook" said that ign and SBI were trying to cancel de studio, and because it culture wars generate click people and keep us divided people have been parroting it as true while there is no proof and tons of things are proven to not be like the commenter said of just false. For example with IGN being one of the media with better treatment and exclusive access given by the studio.
That was a _false_ (AS USUAL) narrative pushed by Americans grifters based on a single post from the Chinese Twitter. *And most importantly* Ay coño, basta. Enough with the SBI nonsense. They are not bogie man. They are not a secret cabal controlling the industry. Try and _think_ a little bit and grow up.
I usually don't agree with your takes, but you're on point here, it looks great but it is a new developer and people are over-hyping it, we all know how that story ends...
It's the same type of people who hated on Kingdom Come Deliverance because the game had no other ethnic diversity besides Bohemians, Germans, Austrians, and Hungarians. And that you couldn't play as a female character. Which obviously wouldn't work because the game is historically accurate to the location and culture.
