The ‘work of the Danes’ is a reference to Dannevirke, a town in the Manawatu- Whanganui region of the North Island. In 1872, immigrants from Scandinavia settled in Dannevirke. This is our first stop on the way to the Hawkes Bay region.
We were hoping to get more information about the town’s history. Unfortunately, the Museum was closed due to the pandemic. Moving along, we looked at some nice old buildings and shops.
Dannevirke Domain is a beautiful spot for a picnic. We strolled around the garden. Some roses were still flowering despite the of the change of the season. In other areas, the children’s playground features the carved front and back part of a wooden Viking ship.
Approximately an hours drive from Dannevirke is Waihi Falls. The road surface is mostly sealed apart from the last two kilometres which is a gravel road. Also, some parts of the road are windy and narrow. It is an easy and short walk from the carpark. If you have mobility issue you can view the waterfall from the small viewing area at the top of the track. There was a lot of water going over the falls due to the heavy rain on previous days. It was nice and relaxing to watch the cascading waters.
