** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
So many of you enjoyed A Walk In The Mist a few days ago that we thought another Fog Of War sudoku might be a good idea. So here is mnasti2's A (Sling)Shot In The Dark, which is a wonderful introduction to the "slingshot" ruleset!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. A digit on a bent arrow shows how many cells away the digit in the cell from which the arrow originates appears in the direction of the arrow, e.g. if R1C4 was a 3, then whichever digit is in R2C4 would also be in R1C1. Under the fog, a double-headed arrow is two overlapping slingshots, and adjacent digits along a green line differ by at least 5.

I always do these as much as I can without watching, then when I get stuck, watch until a new piece of logic that I hadn't figured out is shown, then I pause and continue on. Very happy with myself this time, as I only needed the roping logic to get the initial 2, and the rest I did completely on my own...

One of these "fog of war" puzzles needs to be named "The Man in the Mist" after the Agatha Christie short story.

I agree, and I think that is definitely why these are so popular. I do think it would be sort of fun if a creator "tricked" us by creating a puzzle with some bit of the fog cleared that doesn't actually help at all at the beginning. The only real way I could see that if it was like one of the previous videos where the whole puzzle is fogged over and the rules or outside the grid clues were able to place a digit somewhere specific in the grid. But then the creator also just left 4-5 cells randomly visible with something like an arrow and black dot showing or something. But I also think that generally creators don't try to "trick" so much and would rather try to convey the logic in the layout, regardless of how difficult that logic is.

I was really confused by the double arrows for a bit there until I figured out exactly what the originated cell was supposed to be for each end. Fun puzzle, and still really love these fog of war puzzles

If I can make a suggestion, Simon could use a previously featured fog of war puzzle to illustrate how the correct digits lift the fog. Of course that may still spoil a puzzle for some people, so alternatively maybe someone could create a really simple fog war just for illustration purposes. Not sure how much effort that is. In any case, thank you for the channel and thanks to all the constructors for all the great puzzles!

Fog of War is my favorite. It provides immediate gratification, and it also constrains the problem to help me focus on just a subset of the grid, like a chess puzzle.
@essentialatom

It's funny, they initially look stupidly difficult because so much information is hidden, but once you get going you realise how the fog can direct your attention to exactly where it's needed. I've only felt that one or two of the fog puzzles I've played have been made harder by the fog. Mostly it functions as a guide.

I loved this puzzle and think it was an excellent use of the fog of war variant. I loved how the slingshot allowed some digits to be placed far off in the fog and in some cases, like the 9 in box 6, allowed the fog clearing to show distant clues. Really a great use of it. I am also slightly selfishly satisfied that Simon also missed the slingshot clue that was cleared up when he placed the 6 in box 3. I did as well, but it took my about 10 minutes to figure it out. Simon only missed it for a couple. I wonder if our coloring over the fog is part of the reason we both missed it as soon as it was cleared.

Solved in 31:44. This was a really fun ruleset, and I love how the sling shots became became progressively more complicated as you went further into solving it. My favorite part is the 135 triple in box 1, where the arrows are revealed when you fill in the 6 and then the triple is fully resolved in pretty much one go.

The weird relationship between the pencil marks in r1c4-6 out the gate is fascinating, because their "slingshot" cells are in the same cage/row they have to all point to different cells, making them this weird pseudo-triple where r1c4, [r1c5-1], and [r1c6-2] have to all be different...

This slingshot deserve an app Congrats to the setter of this puzzle, mnasti2 has a really cool Idea, and the concept of slingshot have 3 pattern 1) in box 1 i will call it the Balance, one digit is heavier than the other (if 2 balance are face to face, one goes up the other goes down, Left/Right is turn 90°) 2) in box 8 i will call it the corner shot, when you change the direction of your shot (maybe it's possible to make a square of corner shot) 3) in box 2 i call it a streak and what is the most longest streak possible ? I think it's 8 but i'm not sure
