Aaaaye we did it baby. We uploaded another video! :D (quick notes: I know his real name is actually John. I also used some Phantom Pain footage just because it applied really well to the moment. I understand Phantom Pain Big Boss is Venom Snake :D)
Speaking of legendary hero characters, I am at the moment looking through what you did hoping to see a video on Samus, if not I'd recommend you to go look into her, she has some surprises to give.
Awesome video! MGS 4 is a good game to look at in this series for its major focus on mental health, especially with Solid Snake's wariness and Raiden's PTSD.
Sorrow is the only way you could end up after experiencing all of those things. The names are a chronically metaphorical, that speak to phases/stages or “Bosses” all together making him “The Big Boss”
I watch a lot of video essays on my favorite games and game characters. The time and effort you put into these things is mind blowing and shows your dedication to this channel. Yes the DMC5 video series was what got me hooked but the quality of the content is what keeps me watching. Keep up the good work man.
Thank you so much because one thing I'm hella worried about is not being able to maintain the audience I got unless I only do DMC videos. So thank you for sticking around :D
16:16 She didn't "believe" that a soldier is "meant" to be a political tool. She said a soldier IS a political tool, because that is what they actually are. It's not an ideaology, it's a fact. Big Boss didn't want to be a political tool. Hence why he made a nation for soldiers, by soldiers. This is something that can be heard all the way back in MGS1 where Gray Fox told Snake "we are not tools of the goverment, or anyone else". In the end being a mercenary soldier is the only way you can be a soldier without being a tool. She made foolish decision which deeply pains her all the way to the end. Killing the man she loved, the father of her child, and giving away said child to the philosophers. Which is why she said at the end " I gave up my body and my child for my country. There is nothing left inside me now. Nothing at all. No hatred, not even regret, And yet sometimes at night i can still feel the pain creeping up inside me. Slithering through my body, like a snake..." Big Boss didn't want to live a life like hers. A life where soldiers gets used and discarded just like that. The Boss DID give up on the world. She didn't have to to give a damn Nuke to Volgin which started the whole need for operation Snake Eater in the first place, and nearly started World War 3. After she did that, she knew that it could only end one way. The Boss is also a hypocrite. At one point she gives you a returning lesson about having the "unflinching will to survive" and yet here she is not having that anymore, but still willing to give up her life for a country that used and betrayed her time and again.
The boss was a triple agent who aided volgin to create a threat so that the us and USSR could come together in celebration of her death. She was a good woman she don't deserve to be remembered like this.
The box is the most crucial infiltration tool a soldier can have. P.S.: Thank you so much :D Hope to keep you interested with the next set of videos I've got planned
It's a shame that Portable OPs isn't fully canon. Snake has a great line to sum this up in that game. "I'm doing this out of loyalty to myself - I'm NOT going to live my life the way The Boss did."
It isn't fully canon but Kojima has said everything that doesn't contradict what he establishes is canon which isn't that much so it pretty neatly fits in the timeline and is a great telling of how he became a leader
I love how you explain this in more related ways as a communication student this is really useful and i love how you explained every snake action in everygame in way that everyone could understand
Love the analysis and comments section as well . Very, very well done mi fren. Cozy was a soldier and inspired by the old Metal Gear Solid games to do it. You really halp put things into perspective in more ways than one. Keep on keeping on anon.
Remember he be Dummy Thicc, and that clap keeps alerting the guards. But real talk, one of my all time favorite characters, going so far to get plenty of ideas for my own book. I'm glad you jumped into one of my favorite series!
Dad, why is my sister called Rose? Because your mum loves Roses, son. Thanks Dad. No worries, A Soldier's Purpose | Metal Gear Solid (Big Boss Analysis Part 1)
This was a pretty great video. I never quite understood why big boss considered the boss to have betrayed him so it was nice seeing it interpreted in a way that made a lot of sense
If you think about it, it’s a game about a failed mission. Operation Snake Eater. To eat a snake. The Boss was supposed to Noon snake. Not snake Nooning The Boss. But the Boss chose to let him live and die in his place.
This is so meta with MGS, given solid snake was sent to die but refused to do so, surprising even "Big Boss" himself... Man this series really hits with symbolism
Subscribed! I love the way you analyse Big Boss here and the quality of this content is pretty good! I have also watched your DMC5 analysis as well and they were just as top notched as this one! May I suggest, when you have the time, to do an analysis on Nier: Automata? I believe that game also goes in great depth when it comes to their characters as well and I would love to hear your thoughts on them.
Subscribed, seriously I hope you do more vids on these characters. Would ask for shin megami tensei protagonists outside persona too but that is to force constraints on your work. Keep doing you man, you got talent.
Are you gonna do more Metal Gear Solid? Big Boss first, then later Ocelot/ADAM, Solid Snake/David, Liquid/Eli, Solidus/George Sears, Raiden/Jack the Ripper & Gray Fox/Frank Jaeger?
She wants the world to return to the way it was before the philosophers and the Wiseman council but united like it's now, but snake created an even bigger monster than the one that she resented.
Champion, love this video and your earlier work on DMC5. I look forward to the rest of these videos that chronicle and explore the depth of Big Boss's character arch. I humbly request if you would consider doing a video on the characters of Angeal Hewley, Zack Fair and Cloud Strife, if you're inclined and are familiar with Final Fantasy Vii and Crisis Core. I recently replayed both of them and have come to appreciate that these three characters are all connected and share a legacy of heroism and honour. Despite their ties to SOLDIER and JENOVA, these three men retain their humanity and personal convictions to be true to themselves and not allow themselves to be monsters and slaves JENOVA's destructive and cancerous influence on the planet. At least that's my take on it.
I think tbh with the Boss and Snake, Boss was a mother to her son she gave up her life to save his son which wasn't really tackled in this video where she shows her scars to Snake giving birth and they're soldiers, which defines them loyalty and the mission. Snake thinks she betrayed him by letting her guard down at the last moments of both occasions she "died" the cqc battle and the Peace Walker AI, which he feels did the Boss go all out on me or she just did what she was ordered to do to protect the US and to protect the world from nuclear.
I assume Boss is Snake's (Big Boss) actual mother, since to me that just makes the most sense, since we know she had a child but the father is dead, and the scar on her looked kinda like a snake, maybe I've just been reading to much into it but we never really hear Snake or anyone else for that matter talk about his family to my knowledge.
Really this video and the others on DMC just kinda highlight how great the writing in DMC was(even though it was poked fun at) and how incomprehensible the writing was in MGS. Back in PS2 era DMC was made fun of as: "Two hundred (hundred?)... Yeah two hundred years ago something... Something really bad happened and now you... Must do something about it!" -(Very)Inaccurately ripped from an old Newgrounds skit Whereas MGS was regarded by some as some kind of masterpiece that could put Shakespeare to shame. If you said otherwise you'd get "kOjImA-sAn iS aN ArTisT aNd yOu CaN't uNdErStAnD rEaL ArT."
DMC has a simple way of telling a story that provides enough context to the gameplay for the player to understand and get a kick out of. MGS intentionally tries to be a movie within a game which makes it come off as unnecessarily complex. I love both of these series to death though. I hold both of them to a high standard. I love the plot twists that Kojima tries to work into MGS, but I also appreciate how straight forward DMC is without compromising it's characters.
I actually only know the first two games in the series. I started watching a series of Snake Eater once, but I never got to Metal Gear 4. I'm really excited though, to learn more about Big Boss and Raiden. And I'm totally in it for the video about the Boss. This woman seems really cool.
