A Soldier's Story is a 1984 drama film directed by Norman Jewison. It is a story about racism and segregation in a black army regiment with white officers deep in the Jim Crow South. A black officer investigates a murder of a black non-commissioned officer on an army base in Louisiana near the end of World War II, a time and place where no one had ever seen a black officer. Starting with a tiny but pithy clue of the sergeant's last moments and last words, the movie is a powerful thriller and historical drama.

Yeah and man, It's sad that Caesar not only died way before his time, but didn't see Denzel grow to what he is today.. I'll bet they definitely would have done a lot more work together through the following years. Even though they were ops in this film, they still had chemistry and made it work.

They wanted what was best for themselves, in my opinion. Sarge hated C.J., but didn't have the courage of his convictions to simply say that; He, instead, resorted to subterfuge in order to harm C.J. Pete shot sarge as much for revenge for the dirty fighting tactics, than he did "for C.J., for everybody."

Sargent Waters & Peterson are duality of Black men in America. And the timing of this film is Perfect. A Farm boy, a 1st generation Californian and Waters being from the Lost Generation of the roaring 20’s. Waters reminds me a lot of the WWII military men that were Catholic from Louisiana. Very conservative and fighting to keep their kids away from the majority of black people in California during the 50’s and 60’s. They were about dignity but their kids wanted to fight back and be free.

Denzel plays Peterson well. The Play is only as good as the actors in it and they are great.
