Today we're taking a look at Hell Let Loose through the eyes of a long-time Squad player. I've always had a very closed mind about Hell Let Loose and called it a "less arcadey Battlefield," but that all changed once I actually gave the game a chance. Thanks for watching! The goal of today's video is to invoke an overall "huh" response from many of you. I can't speak for you all, but I've been a long time fan boy and lover of Squad, so the idea that other games were doing things better never occurred to me. Exploring new titles like hell let loose has opened my eyes to what could be possible in this genre and how innovative or unique other games are handling many of these core game mechanics. I hope you all enjoy the video and maybe have your scope of what's possible widened in the process.

No one likes to die on games. But no matter how good you are, we all do at some point. Some more than others. But this game I don't mind dying. Even if I got to wait 20-30 seconds to respawn again it's worth the wait. Every time I die just gives me a reason to try a different approach/tactic to see through my objective. I think this game is nigh on perfect.

One of the things that I like about HLL and by extension the scoreboard is suppression. Getting suppressed by an MG in HLL will actually pin down either yourself or the enemy you're shooting at if you deployed well enough. And the scoreboard accounts for this in combat score. Suppressing and pinning down enemies actually contributes to your exp and score. Which is great because I've played a couple of games as a Machinegunner and gotten fuck off kills, but suppressed and denied entire flanks and avenues of advance to the enemy, single handledly contesting them from key areas. And despite not making many actual kills, I was still rewarded for it :)

Something I’m still trying to wrap my head around even though I’m 78 hours in (which in retrospect is nothing compared to others). Before getting Squad I was scared shitless to play it because of all the milsim elitism in the subreddit and other areas of the community, I watched so much content and learned to play the majority of the game before ever touching it, people told me that the K/D ratio means nothing in Squad, yet at the end of rounds even more experienced players always remarked on their ratio regardless of if the whole team was a shitshow during the round or not.

every single time i've popped into Squad or Post Scriptum , the supposedly soooo serious mil-sim games, there are tons and tons of people playing arcade like and only worried about kd/r , and only slightly on worried about team play. there are some really serious community servers. but there are those servers in HLL too. so the whole "arcade = hell let loose, and serious = squad, PS, is completely bogus, its really the server, and communities/clans that make the game. public matches in all those games are hit and miss. i've had squad games that felt like i was in a call of duty game, so many running around, and doing arcade moves like going prone quickly and jumping as much as they can.

As a veteran HLL player you've said so much perfectly, only thing i think you missed is the devs generally actually listening to community and their feedback and trying new things. Of course there are some smaller issues, but in the grand scheme it's pretty much has few issues compared to a lot of other games this day and age. One of the most intriguing is the lack of tutorial, which weirdly makes people have to ask or listen how to play the game and personally the community more inviting (cause we were all there at one point), but of course it also turns people off to not have one

I know I'm a year late, but the one thing that really holds this game back is the lack of punishment for people who create squads but don't pick the SL role. It happens in Squad too, but I think there's a much lower tolerance for people creating squads and then leaving. But in HLL, people will do it all the time, leaving a bunch of squads with no SL, which means no OP's or Garrisons. This can really make the game a chore to play, especially when you factor in that not having a mic seems to be the norm in HLL. But then you'll have an absolutely phenomenal game which will reset your anger for the flaws in the design. It's very much a love/hate relationship.

I love playing as Support because it keeps me close to the SL and engineers and I can make suggestions for nodes and garri placements. Also if you split from your squad (tends to happen when your OPs or Garris get overrun and you re-spawn way back from the frontline), encounter another squad they are always happy to take supplies and ammo when asking 'Do you guys need any supplies or ammo!?'

I have never hear someone call Hell Let Loose "arcade-ey" in fact I think it's a realistic type shooter with a very short TtK, yes you respawn quickly compared to some other games but I sort of think of this as a combat replacement from your armies reserves moving up. For instance you are rifleman and are caught and die to a tank, your squad commander calls for an AT from the reserves to be brought up to his fulfill his squad and to deal with said tank.

A bit of a contrarian comment here. I have clocked in about the same amount of hours in Squad and Hell Let Loose (about 500h in each), so I don't have any inherent bias towards one or the other. However, I feel that your video had a feeling of "burnt out vet on one game vs rose tinted glasses, honeymoon phase in another game". But let me deconstruct this first. While I agree that the term "hardcore battlefield" is not warranted, describing it as a "streamlined WW2 Squad" is somewhat accurate as they both take inspiration from Project Reality. However, despite launching into 1.0 HLL still has a lot of teething problems on a meta and mechanics level, that you might not have noticed yet. Both games will invoke different feelings and I like both for different reasons. Where Squad excells is that it's focused on tactics on a micro-level with more intimate, squad on squad skirmishes and the battle more spread out not only because the maps are bigger but the attention in not only focused on caps themsevles. You have FOB's/HAB's which become mini objectives themselves. Micro-level tactics don't matter too much in HLL, because deaths are inconsequential and often times are even favorable as they can be used to gather information. Where HLL puts emphasis on is tactics on a macro level, where it's about applying tactical pressure on a given point from different vectors of attack. Enemy garrisons and OPs are somewhat of a secondary objective, but not as consequential because of how easy it is to set them up. Because of that, you'll actually find that most communication and tactics in HLL is happening between Squad Leads (command chat can be brutally hectic), while in Squad it seems to be opposite where it's tilted more towards communication within your Squad, because - again - deaths are more consequential and you don't have pings in the same format. Also the persistent friendly icons limit the need for proximity comms because you see where people are and where they aren't. Squad essentially forces teamwork and communication, while HLL makes it optional for an additional payout but perfectly viable without it. Which naturally reframes the gameplay. On an individual soldier's level, it's also a mixed bag. The TTK is so low, because it's so easy to hit twitch shots at even high distances and there's no sway involved. There's a lot less inertia in movement and while running might feel slow, it comes with no stamina. Suppression is inconsequential because there is little penalty to dying, which also makes medics completely useless. I chuckle when people say that Squad has twitch shooting mechanics, when HLL is the twitchiest among tactical shooters. Lack of ammo persistence is actually an issue and DOES lead to spam, particularly of the anti-tank variety. Sometimes, killing an AT is unfavorable for the tanker and favorable for the AT because he just spawns with a fresh loadout. Same goes for things like mines, where you can spam the hell out of those everytime you die and put them on chokepoints. The rifleman class is useless because you'll never live long enough to need to restock ammo. The commander abilities are cool but they severely lack balance, because the resource system is still half baked. Tanking isn't as good as advertised. It's the one element of the game that enforces coordination the most, but is undermined by quite simplistic mechanisms around it. Overall, the main message is that it's easy to be enamored by a fresh game, and easier to juxstapose it against another game that you're probably burned out on. Squad is still the more mature game, gameplay wise while HLL still has a lot to figure out. Stuff that Squad already has figured out.
@Gorlami14
@Gorlami14 3 года назад
You're absolutely correct and thank you for taking the time to say all of this. I am definitely in the honeymoon phase with HLL after becoming burnt to a crisp on Squad. I do however see a lot of the cracks in the foundation in HLL already, I think they're just easy for me to look past right now. The biggest thing for me, and I'll preface this by saying I really only play either game when I'm streaming, is I feel like I can kick back and just enjoy a game with HLL. I don't feel like when I SL I am responsible for 49 other players like I do in Squad. I've made it my mission for so long to help the Squad player-base, that nowadays, I'm completely unable to kick back and relax when playing. I do really enjoy the team work and communication elements in a video game, but I think right now my brain is pretty happy just running around shooting things and having a laugh.
@ribspreader123
@ribspreader123 3 года назад
@@Gorlami14 Yeah, the secret sauce in HLL is that it provides enough depth to make the game not feel shallow, but also doesn't go overboard with borderline obtuse mechanics. That means that the learning curve is managable and skill floor is lower, but in consequence the skill ceiling is also not as high. Which is the main gripe that a lot of the more hardcore vets have with the game. Squad has a way higher skill floor and ceiling, which leads to people taking way longer to feel comfortable in the game. A consequence of that is that the community is more laid back. But on the flipside, it kind of clamps the game experience, compared to Squad. In HLL the streamlined nature means that even a few people that know what they're doing can keep the entire team afloat, the lows aren't as low. Which is what you experienced. You don't feel like you have a weight of the team on your shoulders. But on the flipside, the highs aren't as high. Taking out a garrison can be as trivial as a well placed bazooka shot. Meanwhile a successful push on an enemy HAB, overruning it, taking out the stragglers, then keeping out the retreating enemies, looking for the radio, finding it, digging it down till bleedout and following through the bleedout is almost like a battle within the battle. It's more complex, but in consequence way more satisfying in that particular context. One thing that I have not mentioned is that what really sets the game's apart is the fact that in HLL you always know the score of the game. You know if you're winning or losing. It's much more tangible. In Squad you never know the score and I found that it can be quite anticlimactic when you think that you were doing good, but ultimately lost or thought you were taking a beating but somehow ended up winning by 80 tickets. I don't really think of these games as competition but rather supplementary titles and I like to alternate them depending on the mood. If I feel more sweaty and tryhard a given day, I'll load up Squad. If I want to chill out and shoot some people, I'll jump into HLL. Lastly, on that note, I think one game could help the other. Playing HLL will make you a better Squad player. So if I were you I'd actually encourage struggling Squad players to check out HLL as it'll teach you a lot of transferable skills, but in a more stress free environment. I actually bought the games at the same time, started with Squad, struggled a lot, but then as I got better at HLL it allowed me to improve my Squad game once I figured out how to be aware of both the tactical and strategic side.

@@ribspreader123 First of all, you should write a book or something because the means in which you get your points across is fantastic and incredibly easy to understand. Everything you said is spot on. I think as I play more HLL and other games in the genre, I'll slowly gain a better perspective and appreciation for what each of the games emphasize. That part is tough for me to do however, due to my brain only wanting to take on one thing (game) at a time. My gaming cycle has always been: play the hell out of a game > become the best player I possibly can > start to see the cracks in the foundation > keep playing until I completely burn myself out. I need to do a better job of trying new things so I don't continue to follow the same path.

@@Gorlami14 I feel you, I had the same issues but now I make sure that I emphasize variety in my gaming. Unfortunately, the thing I've realized with games is that the chase is better than the catch. Games are most fun when you're still mastering them. But when you finally do that, then you have nowhere to go and it becomes progressivel more unfun. But IMO it's not because of the game itself, just your attitute towards it. The biggest problem of games like HLL or Squad is that your enjoyment is bound to the competency of 99 other people. It can be either the most intense experience or the most miserable, rage quit inducing slogfest. It's both their biggest strength and weakness.

I learned that nobody gives a shit about your accent and I've even found some fellow Norwegians in the game, most of them being from the north side like me so that made the experience much better.

I don't know how many others this is true for, but I find myself kinda almost roleplaying my role in Hell Let Loose. Like If I'm not a squad leader all I want is two things: an order, and a direction. Give me those and I'll go do that, otherwise I'm just gonna hover near the squad lead and try and keep 'em alive. As a squad leader though, I do the exact opposite: I rarely am fighting unless we're being pushed hard, and I'm usually analyzing the map and planning attack vectors and anticipating enemy movements, and trying to organize my guys in concert with the other squads' movements

we as a team in HLL have tactically defended 1 point back from point 3 for 1 hour and 15 minutes, as a false sense of security. Then we made one push into Dug Out Barn from FOY to cap it. The cap was completed with 4 minutes remaining, it was very satisfying. Defending in HLL can be more satisfying than attacking a lot of the time.

My only gripe about Hell Let Loose is the fact that there’s not enough transport vehicles that spawn in, so 9/10 you gotta hump it to the next objective that’s almost always a 1.0km away and by the time you FINALLY get there you either get scalped by a player that you’ll never see or blown to bits by a random artillery shell only to repeat the process bc people don’t place down garrisons or outpost. However that’s part of the game and there’s nothing you can do about that, so I guess what I’m really complaining about is the respawn timer. I really don’t want to run for 10+ minutes just to randomly die and then get punished with a 60 second respawn timer…that shit is fucking lame. I get this isn’t COD, but you’re giving me a black screen for 10s (more depending on how many teammates I accidentally killed) then I gotta wait anywhere from 45-60s just to spawn 600m away from the fun. A universal 15-20s respawn timer is MOREEE than enough. Shit maybe even less. Sometimes I spawn in 3-6s and it feels fuckin GREAT!!

Hey 1.5k hours on HLL, great video, though you missed a couple of things! Airhead spawn - The commander can drop a temporary garrison (6 spawn waves) for 400 manpower every 10 minutes. They also recently added Halftracks which act as a mobile garrison. They allow for infantry to spawn when its parked with the engine turned off. One thing squad does better is Freelook. Currently in HLL you cannot turn your head with alt

If the game had more emphasize on not dying, and MEDICS actually had a purpose I would play it. Every one just runs in , dies, then respawns, like battlefield. I can appreciate the comparison but one thing I didn't see touched on is what I consider the most important difference: penalty for death. There is basically no penalty for death in HLL. Penalty for death in Squad is what makes suppression work and why people move tactically, revive and play as a team. It's what makes a marksman, sniper or RPG so dangerous and makes people keep their heads down. In HLL you are actively rewarded for playing in ways that are gamey.

The vehicle timer system makes some sense. Normally you'd have to call in support as normal leg infantry and that process may take more time based on how high up the chain of command the asset you're calling for is. On the other hand, in real life those assets will be somewhere on the map. The time delay is just the asset's travel time. So the most realistic system would be to allow commanders to set the locations of all their vehicles before a match starts. After that if a vehicle is needed elsewhere it needs to drive there and if it's lost it's gone.

hell let loose thin out the aspect of personal hero, you dont get to see the actual score of that player, just how efficient he contribute to the team, like a player with ton of support point, building and running supply, combat point by killing enemy tank and infantry and even destroy defensive, offensive and defensive point means how much time on attacking and defending.

been enjoying HLL a bit so far, I like that the maps are mostly flat so you're not scanning 30+ windows and alleys for a gunshot that sounded east but could easily be any one of those places. It still suffers from unreal engine syndrome with everything being pixelated but the majority of guns being short ranged or single fire weapons kinda helps take the sting out of that a bit. I think my favorite part of HLL is the simplicity of the objectives and moving away from the now archaic "ticket system". Nobody cares about tickets until there's only 50 left but they care about they're KD. It's such a weird paradox constantly at odds with itself. HLL lets players focus on what's important, the objective, without feeling guilty about their K/D or dick measuring shit that doesn't even contribute anything.

Spamming grenades is not so unrealistic, infantry would keep 1 grenade for defense, so they can toss it towards the enemy if they are being charged and need to maneuver. Otherwise they would assign 2 riflemen for offensive grenades.upply. This is pictured in Saving Private Ryan before they assault the MG nest they swap their equipment between each other without even talking, to portray that this was routine for them and they had already planned a procedure before the assault since they were a squad of veterans who fought in 3 campaigns.

I will add this tip to HLL players. You can actually place outpost inside of buildings. The 2 or 3 story buildings, not sure how, are able to have outpost built in them. Personally, I LOVE the game modes. Even if a game last the full 1.5 hours it can take, I find that those are the matches that I love the most and come away with the most intense moments from. Eventually the team that has held the objective for most of the game will have to deal with arty, armor and a full scale counterattack from the enemy all at once.

This was probably the best introduction video to HLL ive seen as a new player, everything you said Ive noticed too, and some more issues I have is how nothing is explained in the game, which I think leads to more frustration. I give this game a 6/10, when you get a team that doesnt work together its a terrible experience probably a 3/10. Sometimes you get a team that does work together and its a 8/10. I got 22hrs with this game, and its a mix of fun and bad games, I just wish they would nerf artillery and do more auto help for a losing team getting steamrolled, the way a team can win it at the end if they lost the whole game is weird as you say, kind of dumb if you ask me.

I love Squad, played since just about the very beginning. I remember when defending was such a integral part of the game. You would have these insane hunkered down battles. The sound of rounds flying everywhere, explosion's nearby. Being a medic just running around doing your job in the midst of it all. You usually never even had a chance to fire your weapon, you were too busy. Matches would start and end on the same objective. I miss those days a lot. I find myself having those types of games in HLL these days more often than I do in Squad. Although admittedly, I haven't played either in a while.

They updated the garrisons I am pretty sure, that or console has different mechanics. But now, it should be 10 meters before it locks down in friendly, and fifty for enemy. Outposts get dismantled at 10 meters. Airdrops have an odd disable radius. Everything you said is pretty spot on, kind of wish you had pointed out the ranging system though, since I know squad has ranging mechanics for their marksman, rockets, etc. It is all by eye and intuition in HLL, and it makes you feel lethal to drop someone with an iron sight from 200 meters out. Honestly, its a great game, and its basically one of a kind on console right now.

One thing you got incorrect was the vehicles. Tanks are on a timer too on most maps you get the Recon and a medium tank off the bat, some you get all tank types, some you get them at timed intervals and then they respawn as normal. This is in addition to the commander spawning them in.

The devs of Squad need to find a way to implement the best mechanics of HLL in Squad because it would create the perfect game. My problem with squad has always been that its ticket based. So you could start out with 200 tickets on invasion, but lose the game in a matter of 10 minutes because people waste helos, armor, or players constantly giving up. Even if its solo players dying and giving up, that adds up real quick. I'd much rather HLL's time limit or territory control model on both Invasion and AAS because it takes the emphasis off of individual players and onto the whole team. That would slow down games and force players to be more tactical or defend points. In Squad, "grand" flanking maneuvers are usually rare because they take so much time to accomplish vs. just throwing waves of bodies straight at a flag.

I've played both, in the beginning I enjoyed he'll let loose more since I was still learning how to play squad. But once I got to grips with squad I started realising how frustrating it is to play he'll let loose and get multiple games in a row with lackluster communication and strategy, resulting in a meat grinder that is easily flanked resulting in the game being lost. Hell let loose can be a fun game but it's average playerbase doesn't care for mechanics and just spawns constantly to the closest offensive garrison.
@HauntingSpectre
@HauntingSpectre 2 года назад
The ability to swap kits is actually frustrating as a tank player. People just zerg you until you die. Which forces very careful tank play. While it's good to keep tanks in check, there are stupid amounts of dedicated players who will suicide until they kill you. I have a record 47 kills on one player in a single game because he kept trying to Sneak up on my tank to jihad me. It's hard to figure out a fix for this, and the only suggestion I really have, is having dedicated AT sections, like the Recon to limit the number of AT weapons just spamming every tank that happens to pop up. Being able to have 10+ AT players just hounding tanks can make for awful games with not much you can do, but switch servers, or try to wait it out. Nevermind enemy tanks will be actively hunting you as well. It's hard to find a good balance of Armor vs AT in a game, because suicide runs are actually encouraged since simulated death has no real deterrent. That said, tanks are absolutely terrifying the odd game you find yourself with no AT. Run around a corner and see a Pz4 being like "TANK TANK TANK GET DOWN SHIT"

I love having a war game that can last up to 1.5 hours always joined BF3 servers that lasted that long too lol

I agree. If the devs create a modern warfare equivalent of this, it may rival SQUAD.

Your points are exactly why i left squad for hell let loose. Though I think Squad would do much better with a 160-200 player count

How the hell did you play Squad without trying out like every other tactical shooter as well? Not like we have that many in the genre. But, welcome to HLL. Game is dope af.

I'm just one of those people that finds a game and sticks with it for along time, so I can know everything and become a really good player.
