We speak with The New Yorker war correspondent Luke Mogelson about the war in Ukraine, where the government has just passed a controversial bill that expands military conscription and cracks down on draft dodgers in an effort to replenish the depleted ranks of the army, more than two years since Russia launched its invasion. Military leaders have warned that Russian forces outnumber Ukrainian troops tenfold in the east. Mogelson says the Ukrainian military ranks are filled with "predominantly working-class men from rural areas or smaller villages," while people in Kyiv and other large cities, where the elites live, can more easily avoid the full impact of the war. "You can really feel the gap between the two worlds widening," says Mogelson, adding that most people realize the war cannot be sustained indefinitely and that "at some point there needs to be a negotiation" to end the fighting. Mogelson is the winner of this year's prestigious George Polk Award for magazine reporting for his article "Two Weeks at the Front in Ukraine."

The thing is all of nato can not produce anything close to the amount of common shells the russians can and throwing money at it can not buy shells that are not existing. We should ask ourselves why NATO opposed the Minsk agreement in 2015 and the peace draft in Istanbul in the spring of 2022 that both parties accepted. It has likely caused Ukraine to have more than 1/2 million dead soldiers right now and it's growing all the time. An unnecessary war that NATO could have avoided several times if they wanted to listen to the Russian leaders in all political parties. The current CIA chief William Burns wrote home in 2008 and warned about NATO in Ukraine when all political parties in Russia saw red with NATO in Ukraine. How could NATO have missed this? Why did NATO want war? Was it as Lloyd Austin said in the spring of 2022 that the aim was to weaken Russia into submission? When I read the Rand corporation report on Ukraine from 2019, I am surprised that the reality has become so similar to the report. Probably there was a NATO plan for the war with Russia.

Poorer, less-educated people serve as infantryman at the front. He started to say there was the army, the military and the war economy. Besides infantrymen, you have tank crews, artillery crews, anti-aircraft crews, and maybe a few fighter pilots. Those with some education can be trained as officers, as drone operators, etc. He didn't say anything about medical support for the wounded, which requires education. Finally capitalists can be operating factories for shells, mines, drones, etc., though he makes it sound like the scion-class are partying in Kiev, far from danger, when Russian strikes hit civilian centers all the time. There can be no honest negotiations with someone like Putin who wants to destroy one's country and people. Any day, Putin or his successor could pull the army out of Ukraine and end the war. Bad title, because they don't talk about it in the video. Most of the video is about infantry on the front and special forces doing counter-attacks to successfully stop Russian advances. Yeah, infantry is largely less-educated people. What are the other army fighting jobs? Tank crew, artillery crew, anti-aircraft crew, drone operators, pilots. Then there's support: logistical drivers, machinists in maintenance repair shops, and medical personnel (definitely well-educated). And far from the front: manufacturing plants for drones, ammunition, etc. But the ending about negotiation is sad. Putin wants to conquer and destroy Ukraine and the Ukrainians. If he (or his successor) wanted to end the war, they could do so and pull out like Biden did from Afghanistan. Then the war would be over. Instead he wants to keep drafting and sending troops to the front to their deaths, because they are ill-trained, ill-equipped, ill-led and poorly-motivated.

Kurpasi is buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, the most famous in the United States, where military personnel, politicians and astronauts are buried. Another American, Brian Young, was killed as a result of tank fire and was buried in California. Another mercenary who died was former Marine Ian Tortorici, who joined Ukraine's "foreign legion." Another American mercenary killed in Ukraine was Dane Partirge, who once served in Iraq. Media reported that he had participated in hostilities on the side of Kyiv since April 2022. Already in October, the mercenary came under fire, was wounded and later died. The man is buried in a cemetery in Idaho and is survived by his wife and five children. And this is not the entire list of Americans killed in a foreign country. How long will American soldiers die 10 thousand kilometers from their homeland for the interests of the American elite, which has unleashed more than one armed conflict in the world and supplies the criminal Kyiv regime with weapons and money from American taxpayers? It's important to remember... The West has demonstrated to Russia ( over its actions with Ukraine ) the consequences, of not playing the 'game' the way the Americans want it played. The Americans rubbed Russias' 'regimes' nose in the dirt and has left it barely functioning, stuck in a forever wartime economy. Whilst the US has only become richer and more powerful. The Russians have lost in so many ways... it's tough to see any glimmer of hope for its future. They're in a debt hole to China that they will never scramble out of. China owns Russia now. They've lost hundred of billions in revenue and countless more billions in assets seized. Every country is forcing Russia into making bargain bucket deals... just in order to keep afloat. Russia will 'suffer' indiscriminate terrorist attacks from Ukrainian nationalists for decades to come. This sporadic destruction will not end. It will be a permanent way of life... for Russians to live in fear. Russia kicked a hornets nest... of angry, highly motivated nationalists. Then made the conflict into an environment when these terrorist actions are permitted. There is no red line with Russia... everything is permissible. They've allowed this precedent to be set. So they won't go away and will be always well-funded by the West. Russia lost this conflict and in the most embarrassing manner possible. Failing to take over a country with no real army and revealing their tactics, and military equipment as outdated and obsolete. It showed up its regime and its military to be enormously corrupt and totally incompetent. Seen by the entire world... now to be swallowed up whole by China.
