The Story About Care is one man's reflections on the power of the caring relationship that can exist when people working in health care see the "person and not a pathology." Jim Mulcahy shares his heart touching story of what it has been like to be cared for as he lives with end stage lymphoma while caring for his wife Sarah who has Huntington's Disease. This video was produced by the Canadian Virtual Hospice and the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing in association with the Health Design Lab at St. Michael's Hospital and Wendy Rowland, film maker. We are grateful to Jim and Sarah for opening their home and their lives to us and sharing their story in the service of others.

Jim was a teacher in my High school and junior high, and yet I only had him as a director. I have to say that the difference he made in kids, the way he was with students, treating them with respect and dignity, and supporting everyone no matter how stressful his position was - inspired me. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and now that I am, I look to him and his example not only as a teacher but as a human being on how I treat my students, and those around me. Thank you Jim.

+Gabrielle Willems. Hi Gabrielle, I too am a a hospice volunteer (six years now). This video moved me like no other I have ever seen. I am presently taking another course about Palliative Care. There is a video that they showed us at last class which explains Palliative Care very beautifully. I could send it to you, if you like. email me at: ekimnagirroc@gmail.com and I'll send it to you. - Michael Corrigan

This made me cry. I believe that patients are not numbers or diseases, they are people. My first time crying with a patient was with a man about Mr. Mulcahy's age and it was beautiful and difficult but what he needed and surprisingly, what I needed. I believe in the power of touch and I'm so thankful he had nurses who saw him this way and not just numbers.

As a teacher, he shared his story of his love for his wife ( he left the seminary for the love of her), his love for life, and his compassion and respect for us..... even though we were in Junior High. In later years, I met him again, and the loveliness and sacredness for his compassionate had grown.......if possible. So many poems he introduced us to, and such an example to us all.

I have used this video for many years as I taught Palliative Care to RCW, PLNs and RN. Jim has a wonderful way of teaching. I have wondered if he is still in this world with us.

This is so moving. This is what I miss about nursing. It’s the passion to care for other people and not just see my profession as what I do for living but a way to live my life not just for myself but for others too. To see patients and treat them holistically and not just as an object.

I commend you for making this video. As a 22 year veteran paramedic and educator, I think that your video should be shown to all new paramedic students as well as nursing and medical students. It should also be shown to existing medical practitioners of all disciplines to remind them that what we do not only has to do with the science of medicine, but the often overlooked and forgotten humanity side of what we do. I would love to be able to show this to my co-workers and students. Thank you.

Thanks for this! God Bless you! I got white hairs, eye sight and skin wrinkled and nobody cared me! My friend introduced me to ancient techniques to get my sense organs to normalcy and it helped me! Now, I practice this everyday and i used "care" iPhone app by lokesh to make sure i do that what is required on a day to day basis
