Peanut butter stuffed onions? Yes! This depression era recipe is not even the weirdest out there either. (There will be more to come)
This recipe of the great depression was recommended by the Bureau of Home Economics, which was a division of the United States Department of Agriculture. The Bureau of Home Economics would deliver advice to families for household care, like making clothing, home care, and recipes.
Through a radio program called Aunt Sammy's Radio Recipes these cooking tips and recipes were broadcast.
Overall, not the best meal. Afterall it was the great depression, people were working with what they had and nothing was let to go to waste.
I will say though there must be some flavors that work here. After all, The Hemingway, a sandwich named after the famous novelist Ernest Hemingway was just peanut butter and onions on bread, his favorite.

the sad thing is that baking onions with their skin on in the oven is stupidly tasty. Eat them like that and eat a slice of bread with peanut butter and you get the same calories and vitamins, but in tasty.

Your presentation cracks me up… very creative. Love the radio sound and the onion tears! 😭The Great Depression is always so interesting to me! I can’t imagine eating that but very resourceful for the times. Thanks for sharing!

lol I feel like the onions are too thick. I’ve seen other Make it With a thinner or less onion, and it looks more appealing.

I will have to try that next time, if I ever try this delight again 😂

I put peanut butter in everything. This recipe sounds weird, but I’m sure going try it.

Cover them so they don’t dry out!

I guess in the depression times you learn to eat things that maybe normally you wouldn’t. I like onions and peanut butter but not together. I love your videos keep them coming!

Wrap n foil for baking? Moister, I'd bet. I'll add allepo pepper flakes and less b'crumbs.

Pepper flakes actually might make this better. And yes, I should have wrapped them in foil to keep them a little more moist

Have you had Videlia onions? So mild they can be eaten like apples.

I feel like if you wrapped in foil and baked it longer so those onions really soften up, it could be "better" 😊 To me it seems like it's missing something though. Maybe a sauce of some sort.

I absolutely agree, covering them would have helped a bit. The onions could have steamed themselves that way and softened. Still, would have been a depressing dish. The sauce idea is great, I would love to modernize this recipe….I’ll have to think of something

I love these kinds of videos about how food was prepared based on creativity, what was available, what was affordable. No saffron here! I know it wasn't the best dish, but it actually kind of makes sense that someone thought that peanut butter (high in fats and calories and flavor) would pair with an onion (high in flavor). I wonder if it would have been better cooked longer, maybe even covered so that it would be more cohesive (it looked like the peanut butter mixture and onion didn't come together as a dish). Looking forward to another video like this!

Glad you enjoyed! My end result looked pretty identical to others who have made it. I would say yes, I would 1. Bake longer 2. Cover 3. Use a no stir peanut butter. After that I have no idea how to make this better. But I do have ideas on how to modernize this dish.
