I am a Sunni Muslim Cham. This religion known as Bani Islam has existed for many centuries, tracing its origins to the time when Islam made its way to the Kingdom of Champa from Arab regions. Historically, these people are originally Cham Hindus who incorporated elements of Islam into their Hindu religion, and they are not Cham Muslims who incorporated Hinduism into their Islamic faith. There's a story about this religious blending and why the Cham Bani religion still exists even though it's a small percentage. In earlier times, when Islam came to Champa, it was difficult for Hindu and Muslim Chams to coexist due to cultural, customary, and religious differences. To unite the Hindu and Muslim Chams, the ancient Champa rulers allowed the Cham Hindus to incorporate Islam into their religion (which the Cham Muslims were prohibited from doing by religious scholars). Thus, Sunni Islam and Bani Islam were able to coexist due to some religious similarities (like believing in one GOD, Allah). Anyway, historically, Sunni Islam wasn't allowed in Vietnam due to the old Vietnamese government's concerns about potential extremism, as the government was wary of the possible misuse of 'Jihad' for political upheaval. In contrast, the old Vietnamese government found Bani Islam more acceptable because it does not advocate the concept of 'Jihad'. Most Cham Sunni Muslims can be found living in various parts of the world, with the largest population residing in Cambodia. They have chosen foreign lands as they felt a greater sense of security and freedom to practice their faith without fear of persecution in their own homeland, now called Vietnam. Those Sunni Muslims in Cambodia are often referred to as Western Chams, (like myself). The presence of Cham Bani in Cambodia is almost non-existent. You may have heard of Katip Sumat, a notable Sunni Muslim Cham figure who fell victim to the war while leading Cham fighters from Kelantan Malaysia in an unsuccessful attempt to reclaim their homeland (Vietnam) in the name of Jihad. Katip Sumat was labeled a rebel by the old Vietnamese government. This incident, among others, contributed to the perception that Sunni Islam in general was a potential threat to them. During earlier times, Islam in Champa was not as strong, and the old Kingdom of Champa had endured a series of wars, cultural conflicts, and religious persecution for centuries. After the last Champa King passed away, the lack of strong leadership made it even harder for Sunni Islam to maintain its influence in the region. The Cham people no longer have their own country since Vietnam took over through warfare. During those times when the Cham Muslims were forced to consume non-halal food like lizards and pigs and speak only the Vietnamese language, they couldn't even practice Islam as you might expect. This strange religion (called Bani) was deemed 'moderate' by them, which led to its being allowed and promoted as the official religion of the Cham people during annual celebrations at Champa cultural sites, like the Kate Festival. The economic benefits from tourism went directly to the Vietnamese government. This kind of mockery towards the Cham people has been happening for many centuries. In Vietnamese history books, references to Cham Islamic warriors are rarely mentioned. Yet in the history books about the Cham in other Muslim countries like Malaysia or Indonesia, they often discuss Islam in Cham culture, even sharing a common Muslim King, Sultan Zainal Abidin. For many centuries, the old Vietnamese have attempted to erase the Cham identity, so any connection to Islam is not considered part of them. Nowadays, most of the Cham people are now Sunni living scattered worldwide in places like Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and even in their own homeland as minority groups. Most of these people already converted to Sunni Islam and only a small number of them who live in rural areas practice this strange religion. Go find them and spread the truth. Instead of judging, help them.
No it is the opposite. Vietnamese government is trying to force Cham Bani to become Sunni and assimilate them in general Islamic mainstream. In 2022 the government changed the Cham Bani's religious identity on ID cards to "Islam"

@alvarez alvarez I agree with you at some points, call me a Quranist but I still respect others who believe and practicing the Hadeeth. As long as they don't contradict with the Qur'an, then they can practicing the religion all they want. Allah already set many limitations for all muslim, what they must do, what they must not do in the Qur'an. One group of believer can live peacefully with other group. Eventually Allah will explain to us in the afterlife that who among us is the most righteous. But the bottom line is that we cannot be divided, we must not harm each other, we must help each other. When we united, we are strong.

They are good people, it is just like the type of students who always fall asleep during class so they missed alot of lessons and only got few words which are Islam, Allah, Ramadhan, Mahomet.. That's all
The problem is that they are practicing Shirk , and this is something very very serious , i dont know if you are a muslim ? Because in islam this type of ibada falls under ( shirk ) a major sin in islam which ALLAH does not forgive , therefore its important to remind them of this biggest wastage of their life destroying it with this kind of believing , whether you are good looking people or bad , Shirk is not forgivable. Jazakallah khairan.
@Sonny that's a good question.. That's what you wonder about while me wondering if they can be considered as muslim from very beginning coz no matter how we look at it, nothing similar to Islam other than few terms/words used like Ramadhan, Allah, Mohamet, even the position of their Mohamet is different from islamic version
It's the best explanation given to this sad story. Though my grandparents and parents were also born and raised during the Soviet times and we also 'missed plenty of lessons' and were left with certain terminology that also didn't say much to us. We knew we were Muslims but the majority of us didn't pray, fast, read Qur'an and etc. Their mosques function at least once a month, however ours were closed for decades.
@@taalatchouf5427yeah, superficial for sure. it’s not Islam. bottom line. True muslims do not innovate our religion as per our Prophet Muhammad has stated in the Quran. this can be considered anything else but Islam because it’s not. but that’s just my opinion i guess
Guys, first of all, the title is perfectly incorrect. Not a Bani person calls themselves Muslim or refers to Bani religion as a branch of Islam. Therefore, there's no legal basis to identify Cham Bani people as Muslims when they're not, even Bani religion is somewhat rooted in ancient Islam. There are tons of research papers clarifying that the Bani religion is an independent religion from Islam. Calling their religion Islam is disrespectful. Google them and you'll see! Second of all, many of your comments are inappropriate. As a Vietnamese, I understand Bani religion more than any of you guys here. And listen, no one needs your guidance. Bani people have their own cultural and religious heritage, which they are trying to protect from disappearing because the mainstream continues to misunderstand their religion, from the government to the general public. Last but not least, Bani religion incorporated many rituals and practices from many other religions, such as Buddhism, not only Islam. So why don't call them "A strange Buddhism"? Syncretism is more complicated than you think, so before you do some research first, forget all about your religious propaganda.

This happens when you lose authenticity from religious rituals and start interpreting it by your own wills ... It's happening everywhere in different forms in our modern world ...
All religion is interpreted by Humans. The religious scholars who interpreted Quran and Hadith to derive its current form were as human as us. If they can interpret based on their ancient, dinosaur thinking, we can do the same.

They are Cham ethnic in central Vietnam. You can say they were the earliest or oldest ethnic who converted to Islam in Southeast Asia. Once they have their own kingdom was Champa before invaded by Vietnamese. And now their land was disappeared. They were Hinduism by birth for hundred years before Islam spread to their land. Back to 7th century there was a Prophet Muhammad's Sahabat was been there before he forward to China. Champa kingdom had a most important port between Europe and Middle east to connect to China. His name was a father-in-law of prophet Muhammad. He had broadcasted Islam to the local people of the port. Then they accepted Islam. But the it was not the kingdom religious. But because they were very far from Islam world the knowledge they got was very little. They still not been apart from Hinduism influences. And because their land was conquered by Vietnamese it's hard to connect to newer islamic kingdoms to broadcast and promote them. And Full version of Islam is only the people who migrated to Cambodia land to escape from the Vietnamese slaughtered. Because these people had a very good relation and connection to newer Islamic kingdoms. [[The time that they knew Islam was very short for them, before their kingdom was conquered by Vietnamese empire.]] Hope They would guided by Allah one day. But for me they are still my brothers in Islam.
Good efforts by the team for taking us to such a great civilization with such rich customs and traditions, especially the Muslim community who are still stuck to the teaching Islam in their own inovated way. There is need of more religious education about the true and practicing way of islam rather than mixing it with other religion to please all. Remember pleasing of Allah should be the basic and top most concept of any such practices and that can only be done once we follow the teaching of Quran and Sunnah. We must remember the Khutubatul Widha or the Last msg of Holly prophet (Peace be upon him) during last Huj which is the base of all practices related to Islam. In this last Khuthba or speech the Last point advised by the Holly prophet (Peace be upon him) is as under: "oh u people ! Remember I am leaving behind Qurana and Sunnah, if you follow them, you will never go stray or wrong". Time for Muslim scholars /Ulma to focus on the issue wisely and mutarely by inviting their Religious leaders for further education/ Dialog and guidance and find way out to help them as per teaching of Islam, Quran and Sunnah. envisaged in the last address of the Holly Prophet peace be upon him. May Allah blessing be upon you all. May Allah show us the right path, Amen Jazakallah Khair

It's the duty of the Muslims to go to that country and revive/ or properly teach them Islam, if they don't listen , then Allah takes care of them but as for Muslims , you have done your duty as ordained by Allah and that you will be-rewarded on the day of the judgment for giving the right message. I am sure these people do not have proper knowledge of Islam. Saudi Arabia should be sending scholars to teach Islam all over the world instead of spending money on weapons and killing Muslims.
I think you should leave them alone and fix your own country first. These people lead peacefully with their non Muslim citizens which is more than I can say of Muslim majority countries.
As an Indian Hindu, it just soothes my heart seeing Cham people could not go away from Their indigenous religion and still embraces it , and it amazes me instead of celebrating it, the peaceful people in the comments seciton are criticizing it..this alone shows the difference between all encompassing Hinduism and the peaceful religion
they should amaze after lost connection bani cham still stick to the religion (even localization) In Taiwan most muslim immigrants from Qing dynasty are not muslim now, but looks a bit like Arabic rather than Chinese.
We Muslims believe that everyone once believed in one God, but that idea became corrupted after centuries of culture, misinterpretation, etc. So when people accept Islam, they return to their indigenous religion. Hope that helps you understand; peace be upon you, brother!
Believers, believe in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), in the Book He has sent down to His Messenger, and in the Book He sent down before. Whosoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, has surely gone astray into far error. (136)

The beauty of The Qur'an is that Allah s.t. explains the concept of Godhood to man with clarity of worship. Anything beyond this is innovation. All other forms of worship ensure dis-unity in mankind because it leads to idolatry, hence man end up worshiping the created instead of the Creator.
The mention that the dignitaries can smoke a cigarette before they break the fast got me laughing, looks like the dignitaries have allowed themselves quite a few concessions.
This is definitely not a representation of Islam. They have borrowed elements from Islam, along with other religions. These customs are interesting, but the religion, itself, should not be referred to as a strange/unusual version of Islam.

I thought that as a believer there is only one that has the power to make judgement. Why is it that different individuals and groups who say they are Muslim (although this equally applies to Christians and Hindus for example) feel that they have the authority to judge another's actions and deeds. Having said that, those dignitaries seem to be leading a very charmed life. However, the same could be said of many wealthy and powerful leaders in so called Islamic countries. Some Muslim authorities and individuals will happily make statements criticising various practices of these people, yet they have never met them or know anything about them apart from watching this video. The world of religious practices is full of rituals and rules of behaviour, but it is the heart of a person and their good deeds that will be the measure of their life on Earth. All religions have a variety of practices and interpretations in some of their various branches. The fact that one mainstream branch may claim authority to judge which way is correct or acceptable, is part of mankind's weakness not strength or moral righteousness. If it's not for you, not to your liking or doesn't fit with your understanding; then why must some feel the need to criticise it, correct it, change it, bring it in line with their own view?
The same way scientific consensus is an important aspect of science, islamic consensus in terms of beliefs (including the five pillars) is just as important for muslims. It's called 'Ijmaa'. It's something we use so we don't divide into a thousand different sects, because unity is important in islam. Stating that the prophet is divine and not applying the five pillars is totally against the consensus even within the different "orders" in islam. In other words, this is not a matter of "difference of opinion" (called ikhtilaf), this is an extreme case where the people portrayed definitely DO NOT practice Islam factually speaking.
There's only one Islam and it's not hard to know it . Shi'a worship Ali , and these guys and the ahmadia are inventing things from there own mind and call it islam. Anything that contradicts with the Qur'an and the sunna has nothing to do with islam . There's only one Islam the suni one and the rest are pagans
The majority of the Cham are Sunni. They have kingdom in Annam. Named Champa. They were considered as Malay Kingdom. Even though living in Vietnam and Cambodia, the learned scholars from Hijjaz always came to teach and spread Islam to the Cham. Shaikh Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Zain al-Fatoni have many Cham students who become scholars in Cham.
Truth Written there are sects even in Sunni. The difference just in the interpretation of the Law. The Shariah. The differences in Aqeedah. The creed that makes any sects differ and becomes like another religion. Take as example the creed of some Wahhabi or Salafis who took the al-Quran literally and says Allah attributes resembling the creation, with hands and face.
Truth Written exactly.better stick to getting religious knowledge from known scholars rather thn random youtube video comments. That is the adab of seeking knowledge, to know who your teacher is.
You clearly don't know your Hadith then. Sayyidina Muhammad (S) spoke of sects in Islam, as follows: in Hadith book Tirmdhi Hadith no 171 Narrated byAbdullah ibn Amr Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There will befall my Ummah exactly (all those) evils which befell the people of Isra'il, so much so that if there was one amongst them who openly committed fornication with his mother there will be among my Ummah one who will do that, and if the people of Isra'il were fragmented into seventy-two sects my Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Hell Fire except one sect. They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, which is that? Whereupon he said: It is one to which I and my companions belong.
Truth Written if only there were no sects in Islam...we would be a powerful force against oppression! Culture and traditions are a beautiful and Each can hold onto culture if it does not contradict rulings in Quran.
We need to send a jamaat there for proper guidance and bring them back in the folds of Islam. We have seen this happening and now we have to act on this as a duty. Request for people living in this region please let me know how to reach there.
