The third episode in our “Chronicles of the Desert” series introduces us to Abba Bessarion. Abba Bessarion lived in Egypt in the fourth century. He withdrew into the desert at a young age and was initiated into the angelic life by St. Anthony the Great. He was later a disciple of St. Macarius the Great before becoming a wandering solitary. The following video was based on sayings collected by his disciple Doulas and recorded in "The Sayings of the Desert Fathers." One of his sayings was that "The monk ought to be as the Cherubim and the Seraphim: all eye." No doubt he became "all eye" through his strict asceticism and by following the commandments of Christ to the fullest. More videos coming soon!

A little story, a long time ago, someone, who is Orthodox had told me I was going to burn in Hell and that I should be ashamed for being Catholic. These stories are so encouraging! I love the illustrations and the narration! I am a simple man and I can remember these short stories and the example of the saints impact me more than weighty texts written primarily for monastics! An amazing revelation came to me. Immediately preceding this (Chronicles of the Desert, Ep. 3) I watched the Chosen advertisement about the lame man at the pool of Bethsada. The epiphany was this; The Orthodox Church history is overflowing with the meticulously accurate recordings of miracle after miracle by mere Saints since Pentecost, but Christendom’s Hollywood has to dramatize the stories of the New Testament in order to motivate its proselytes . We Orthodox know of a certainty that miracles still exist unto this our times very much so and all the time. Pray for the poor lost mega-church world of lost sheep following false doctrine.

If Abba Bessarion lived solitary and apparently had no company, I wonder, since he lived an ascetic, who wrote down all these events, supposing Abba was not one of the braggers to promote himself. So, how did we get this information about Abbi Bessarion himself.

Good question. In some of the sayings, he is traveling with a disciple named Abba Doulas. So he and other witnesses probably shared the stories which became part of oral tradition until some monks later compiled them into the Apophthegmata Patrum and other texts in the 4th and 5th century. I would think that all involved shared the stories as a source of wisdom, inspiration, and to help others see that God is working in our lives and to glorify Him.
