David, I followed your directions and didn't watch the video until after opening the box......and was astounded by the contents. This has to be the nicest old car radio I have ever seen....."completely unmolested" :) Put to rest any doubts about my enthusiasm for the radio, it is utterly wonderful.....and I can't tell you enough how much we appreciate your generosity in sending it to us. From the quaint old Loctal tubes (see my video on the 1947 National Deluxe), to the miniature schematic and tube chart, to the beautiful dash panel, knobs, etc. it is as nice as it gets. I assume it is 6VDC, since cars came that way back in the old days, so I will use a 6V battery charger and try to get it back in good working condition. Feel free to go public with this video. I will do the same with my video of the opening ceremony and will include it in my next YT production. I may also use the radio itself in a future video. Thanks again for your generosity and thoughtfulness. You really made our day !!

Uncle Doug. It was the very least I could do in exchange for all that I've learned from your videos. You've been such an inspiration to me (as I am sure you have been to countless others). Because of you, I've been able to repair all sorts of amps for friends and neighbors and I never charge anything. I just do it for the love of doing it which I also I believe I inherited from you. You can just hear in your videos how much you enjoy what you're talking about. Thank you for all that you've done. -David

@@AmpMechanic Wow....we really appreciate your kind words and generosity, David. If our enthusiasm for tube electronics can live on in the hearts and minds of our viewers, then our goal has definitely been achieved.

Holy smokes! That is a pristine vaccum tube jungle! I'll bet UD will do somthing very cool with it. Meanwhile, it would look cool on his bench next to the coolwhip. Thanks for posting!

I'm love old tube raidios. I'm sure someone by now has said this. I believe the padder capacitor was like an Antenna tuner. You could peak out and match the antenna to the radio front end on old school 50's radio's. Those loctal tubes are fantastic. Those old Am radios were very sensitive and great for dxing at night on the AM band. The tubes rarely go bad. Thanks for sharing. Cool Radio.

Aw, the word is Superheterodyne(8-). The radio tunes in the frequency you want, then generates an internal frequency 455Khz above, then mixes the two frequencies. 455khz is called the I.F. ( intermediate frequency) within those tunable "cans" in the radio. That's because the internal oscillator and the station tuner are fastened to the same shaft. The "padders" and Trimmers" in the circuit make sure the tuner and the local oscillator track throughout the band...so that the "beat frequency" between the radio station and the local oscillator is always 455khz..all other stations in the area have a heck of a problem trying to interfere. Having typed all that...those old car radios used 262.5khz as an I.F. Part of that was due to static, hash, racket and noise inherent to cars. The rest was that tuned radio circuits involved capacitors and wire wound coils in the mess...and 262khz could use larger wire than 455khz...the bouncing and banging around of a radio in a car could stress windings on coils and sometimes break them. Larger gauge wire seemed to fair better.

That's a great point. Uncle Doug sets a great example for keeping things out of landfills and I have followed that lead (although my wife is not all too thrilled with the things I've amassed as a result of this spirit). I have vowed no new acquisitions until I fix and thin the heard. But, with some of the things I've acquired, the fix isn't jumping out at me the way I can now spot problesms in a guitar amp. I have an uncooperative power supply for example and it's currently got me stymied.

I've been looking at various Studebaker dashboards. These come close: 1952: i.ytimg.com/vi/kSLYt_dtJdc/maxresdefault.jpg 1948: barrettjacksoncdn.azureedge.net/staging/carlist/items/Fullsize/Cars/201232/201232_Interior_Web.jpg Your radio looks like it fits a *much* older model!

I have no idea what Studebaker this came out of. But that's cool if it's older than 1948. That would put it at 70+ years old!
