👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️🚑Happy Medical Monday! 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️🚑 Quick note: in my mitochondrial diagram, it looks like Acetyl Co-A initiates gluconeogenesis but it doesn't. When Acetyl Co-A is present in large amounts, Pyruvate Carboxylase acts on pyruvate to generate oxaloacetate. The diagram shown is a heavily abbreviated one, and I should have put "PC" on that arrow from acetyl co-a to oxaloacetate and another from pyruvate to oxaloacetate. i'll be more clear next time. if you're a student studying, you know/learn/understand a much more in-depth version and should go off the one in the books.

The vomiting and the diarrhea get pretty bloody too. They turn red while the skin turns yellow, at that point you can no longer walk. And once your body becomes so dehydrated that there is no longer any water to empty, you'll no longer be able to have diarrhea because of a blocked damaged and inflamed intestinal lining. You'll just spew up blood out of the mouth until you're dead. It's absolutely horrible.

Probably miralax, but a doctor told me to do that to clean out my intestines for a scope. Drinking the whole bottle is horrible, you'll be shitting water. If you're just constipated, follow the dosage on the bottle. It works just fine.

3 take aways from this: 1. If you plan on saving food, store it properly immediately. Refrigerate if it's something that needs to be refrigerated. Don't leave out cooked pasta. 2. Trust your nose. If something smells bad, it probably is. Better safe than sorry. When in doubt, throw it out. 3. Don't overdose on medicine. Take the recommended amount, and if you still don't feel better maybe go to the doctor instead of continuing to try to fix things yourself.

Elaborating on one of your points: food that should be stored safely after cooking, needs time to cool off first! Wait until food is cooled down (usually 1-3 hours) BEFORE storing in refrigerator. Storing hot food straight to a refrigerator tends to snap cool, and preserve any bio-toxins, and is a recipe (pun intended) for disaster. Other than that, you're spot on.

@esosj Wow! feel better now? for your information, i don't study medicine, so breathb a little. So you got lucky a few times with refrigerating food hot. Whoopy for you! rule of thumb has always been wait for it to cool. Even the apparently cleanest food after being cooked, has to have some microscopic bug residing in it. Split hairs on the reasons, but i will stick to the tried and true - never refrigerating hot food.

It wasn't until I started learning about mycology that it really dawned on my just how important the food safety classes and knowledge I've learned are. Worked in resteraunts alot and always took it dire-ly serious, but learning about how fast bacteria and mycelium grows in a petri dish and just how absolutely sterile you MUST be to have a clean plate and No contamination growing is INSANE. Leaving food out is absolutely no joke.

I think part of the problem is warning labels say, "Don't take more than X dose within 24 hours." But they never say what will happen if you exceed that. People go a little over, they're fine or think it's a benign substance like water. Next thing you know they're chugging a whole bottle, then wondering why their stomach is upset. But yeah, it's definitely eye opening how many of his cases are either the direct result of or compounded by an overdose of some sort.

It should be a general understanding that this is a body altering effect and if there's a warning not to overdo it, the positive body altering effects are replaced with negative ones at that point. @@OnlyTheQuack That's probably true, and come to think of it a lot of the best teachers I have had are ones who moved into teaching after having already had a career in the sciences (or in subjects like English are truly passionate about the selected texts). As you say, the quality of a teacher matters a lot here, but that's true in general. Still, I think there is a case to be made that teaching something then letting students hear about how this would work - maybe even letting them deduce things based on what they have learned previously - is a good way to involve and interest a captive audience of pupils. An important part of learning is allowing a class - all the way from nursery to uni - to become immersed in the subject as you can't really understand something that doesn't interest you. Part of me thinks that this is unrealistic and may be too time-consuming for a course with a deadline, but if someone could implement stuff like this into the education system it could help add an extra little spark to the science curriculum. It's a nice thought, anyway.

Friendly reminder for everyone out there to not eat a meal if it smells a little funny, perhaps it's slightly bitter or sour and you find yourself pausing part way through, listen to your body it can quite possibly save you from a few days of suffering with food poisoning. Not usually life threatening but pretty gruesome none the less and forces you to put everything else on hold.

You're not supposed to put animal foods in the compost, at least meat or fish, I forget if eggs or milk is okay because I've been vegan a long time. But a vegan diet makes food poisoning very unlikely. If he leaves food out, tell him to go vegan.

I've gotten food poisoning from rotten pasta before, and it was the most sick I've ever been in my life (and there's some competition there). I ate a bowl of some spoiled pasta really quickly before heading to my friend's house for the night, and I spent the next 2 weeks in varying degrees of agony. It was not worth it.

If it smells 'iffy', ditch it. Especially with rice, meat pasta and dairy. Always cool and refrigerate this food as soon as possible. Every 20 minutes the bacteria doubles, usually thousands of spores, not one. within a few hours it could be deadly.

B. Cereus produces toxins which are heat resistant, so even reheating questionable food won't save you. I've had it and it was the worse case of food poisoning I have ever had in my life. At one point, if someone would have handed me a loaded gun I would have killed myself to end the pain.

Yeah, I've heard horror stories from friends with food poisoning. Even if you waste some money throwing out food that was accidentally left out, it's worth it. I think about what might happen after; the pain and misery, and have no problem finding something else to eat. Even if money is tight, there are always food pantries that can help with free food. There's always a way to get something to eat if needed. Also, if you get sick, you're going to waste a lot more money going to the ER or Doctor's trying to get it delt with. These are the things I remind myself of if thinking about whether to throw food away or not. Better safe than sorry.

This video shook me. I was also a college student and accidentally left out freshly made pasta overnight. I thought it smelled fine so I ate more of it and put it back in the fridge. Hours later I went from an upset stomach to feeling queasy and dizzy. I took a dose (not the whole bottle) of Pepto and went to bed early. A couple hours later I woke up with a high fever and queasiness. Long story short I could barely get out of bed and tried to go back to sleep but I kept vomiting each and every hour. It took me weeks to get better (along with feeling bloated) but considering how this story turned out I'm lucky I survived it.

I regularly store cooked pasta in a mason jar...it lasts for at least a week in the fridge, no problem. The thing about leftovers is you have to store them in single-serve jars, so that when you open it you use all the contents. I store cooked beans, soup, rice and pasta in single serve mason jars in the fridge (the beans will last up to 2 weeks because I put the cooked beans in jars while still hot/warm so the jar seals tightly). BTW -- I learned this the hard way, storing soups in larger jars only to find half of the contents went bad after being opened then resealed. B. cereus was one of the pathogens that was discussed in a food safety training session that I took (several times, as orientation and again as a required refresher course). It's bad stuff, and it's why I toss any pasta or rice that isn't refrigerated within 2 hours of cooking. Pasta and rice are cheap. It isn't worth "being frugal" in this case when the consequences of getting hold of "old food" can be this deadly.

The problem wasn't that the spaghetti was old, it's that it had been left out 2 days at room temperature. Bacteria continues to grow in the fridge and there was obviously a lot there already from being out 2 days. As long as you refrigerate your food properly you can safely eat food that's a few days old.

This one was really great. I actually wowed outloud. Having worked in food service and having a father who set up one of the first toxicology programs in the USA, I'm pretty hyper-aware of food safety. Those in food service (or in supermarkets) just don't get the education they need to keep customers safe. I wowed at the stomach medicine killing him. It is the usual hangover response to hit aspirin/alkasetzer and stomach meds, and there is no warning that I know of about this potential complication.

I have a relative who's a doctor, and she's always told me that generally speaking, you don't want to take any drugs or medication unless absolutely necessary, and to be very mindful of how much you take, even with relatively benign stuff like Ibuprofen. It's just adding variables to an already incredibly complex system, and it's hard to know exactly what kind of weird niche interactions and things could go wrong.

I lived in college and I was forced to steal food from other student’s fridges and cupboards in the small hours. When I could I’d buy stuff and put it back. I’ve lived on toast literally for weeks at a time. Both prior to and since then I’ve had bouts of anorexia and I practiced bulimia from the age of 8: I just couldn’t bring myself to eat meat and this wasn’t acceptable so I was forced to eat it. When my mother discovered all my tricks to avoid or get rid of it, she’d search me and look into my mouth etc. when I was freed from the table I’d go outside and vomit. Just had to think about what I’d ingested and up it came. Something’s really gone Wrong when it’s cheaper to eat fries, dead animal burger and drink a coke for less than half a kilo of fresh peas.
