Correct. When I mention open book or open notes exam, my students think they don't need to study. So they spend more flipping through their notes, rather working the problems.

Yeah I got one of the worst grades in my life on an open book exam bc I hadn’t studied for the content and was super lost.

Active recall as your learning!

start studying as soon as you finish the lecture and take notes/annotate as you are "restudying" (relisten or rewatch the lectures if you could as it makes the note-taking process easier as well as recalling the info (if you are worried about how time-consuming rewatching a lecture twice on the same day might be, please don't, because I assure you studying uni material without it will actually take longer because you will not be guided by the emphasis of the professor on certain parts), or take notes from your syllabus incase your lectures are not recorded lectures. But also explain it to yourself as you go in small chunks (every 4-5 sentences) because you want to retain the information as clearly as possible for those high grades not just remember what "the idea" of smth was and trust me it will make the process more fun. Once you finished restudying the lecture on that day, review all your notes on the same night and sleep directly, sleep is like a save button for your brain, especially if you end up thinking about what you studied in your bed. (Now you have revised the same lecture 3 times on the same day with each time getting quicker and easier, can you imagine?BRAVO!) Next, review the same lesson the next day. Then wait 2 more days and review it again. Finally, wait 3 more days and review it again. It's important to wait when indicated and revise when indicated as the days indicated for revision are the days you start to actually forget the info so during the "waiting days " you should study a new lecture because you haven't started forgetting the older one and revising it on those days will not give you the benefit you ideally want from revision. Final tip, stay focused and turn off notifications, especially from your university chat. When you have questions, write them down on a piece of paper to research them later, either use youtube, Wikipedia or sometimes even a dictionary might do the trick, if you still don't understand it, email your professor (ideally her or his email will be on the PowerPoint) avoid turning for the university group chat for answers to your questions because they usually reply late or sometimes inaccurately your last resort should always be the professor because you can just write an email and forget about it + professors get excited when receiving qs from students on time because it indicates that they are engaging with the material (that's what our professors tell us at least) Good Luck bestie, XX
