I honestly can't stand movies like Sharknado that are intentionally bad. "So bad it's good" only really works for me when it feels like filmmakers are genuinely thinking they're making a movie and miss the mark in every way, like "The Room" or Ed Wood's filmography.

almost every great director has used camp elements at one point or another. You'll be surprised how truly campy and purposely mucked up some of the most critically acclaimed movies in history are. Citizen Kane comes to mind- if I dare to be so tardy... To me tongue in cheek is the best form of humor. The awareness of the absurdity of oneself is the prescription to great comedy, and good health! Food for thought...

Thank god I'm not alone in this. I remember being part of a bad movie club that watched this and movies like it, and it pissed me off because half the fun of movies like The Room and Troll 2 are that they were trying to be GOOD. If the filmmakers are in on the joke what's the fucking point?

Well my problem with Sharknado and movies like Fast and Furious is that they are too self aware that they are in a way parodying themselves. They think that they can get away with everything just because they are winking to the camera and therefore comes off insincere.
@cjaquilino
@cjaquilino 6 лет назад
Yeah, "Sharknado" is bad on purpose. The "Fast and Furious" series is over-the-top yet consciously *not* sincere. They're different than So Bad, It's Good movies that are made *sincerely and earnestly* yet turn out genuinely turn out bad, like "The Room" or anything done by Steven Seagal in the last 15+ years.
@Nonsequitorian
@Nonsequitorian 6 лет назад
I enjoyed Sharknado, not Fast and Furious. Sharknado is so absurdly "bad" that to an extent I feel even the winking at the camera is part of it. That they're self aware is also a joke. Syfy, which made Sharknado I think, has been making these B-Movies for a long time. There's many, every year. I remember watching Lake Placid, which is about a giant crocodile invading Maine. Most of these I remember weren't self aware, and the camp comes off as cringe. Its just not enjoyable. Maybe the later Sharknados have over done being self aware, but at least the first few I thought were really good. The insincerity of breaking the 4th wall is highlighted by the jarring switch to the serious tone every few seconds.
@MrMadXenomorph
@MrMadXenomorph 6 лет назад
The main problem with F&F movies is that they look like vomit. I can barely watch this shit, the montage and camerawork is so terrible I can't look at it for more than a couple of minutes. Especially the action scenes, oh god those are pure nightmare, 60% of the time I have no idea what is going on and they just keep throwing random shit at the screen expecting you to comprehend it in 3 seconds.
@rolanddeschain6089
@rolanddeschain6089 6 лет назад
I think some dialoge of Sorkin, Tarantino,The Princess Bride or Wes Anderson are campy, self aware movies or have parodic (parodistic) elements. This can have very various purposes in any kind of storytelling and has nothing to do with bad movies. The other two kinds are: 1. Films that can, but don't want - "Sharknado" (Trash with intention) 2. Films that can't, but want - "The Room" (Trash without intention) 1. I don't like. 2. I like mostly. Because as soon as I see the intention, as soon as I feel passion for the medium, it's real movie-making and I'm interested.
@movieace1295
@movieace1295 6 лет назад
Roland Deschain Well said. I think in the cases of Tarantino, Sorkin or Wes Anderson its like they are aware that they are writing a FILM but the characters are unaware, if that makes any sense...

nah...that is called humor. You see, any of the reminiscences you might discover in the Monty series is used for a purpose..the humor purpose. The campy reminiscences in a camp movie, are just that..a reminder, a link, an attachment, a "hey..I remember this from somewhere", and it MIGHT give you a smile if you do trace the link...but that s all..no humor per se..no further CREATION of a joke.
@MilkyLips
@MilkyLips 6 лет назад
ODDBALL SOK However, there are funny scenes in the movie that the characters take seriously, such as when Camelot kills all the soldiers in the castle to save the ‘damsel’ in distress. That is the essence of campy humour, is it not?

I think Princess Bride is so good despite how corny some of it is because from the opening scene we know its a fairytail story. All the flair and the jokes and rhyming(anybody want a peanut?) Works because it fits the style we expect, making it epic instead of laughable. One of the best movies ever.

I think in some cases you're blurring camp and... absurd? The problem I have is that while the characters in these camp/bad movies take their situation totally seriously it's always painfully obvious that the film makers don't, which destroys everything for me. "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace", and I guess Wes Anderson's stuff seems to be different, because they embrace camp while still being very thoughtfully crafted. I'm not sure if there's such a close connection between camp and bad either. No one has every said "you have to see this Wes Anderson film, it's so bad it's good". Especially in Princess Bride the camp is part of it, down to the core, right? I haven't seen it since I was a kid but I distinctly remember it as a comedy that didn't take itself too seriously but was still well made. These things are fun, but they're not lazy, or cheap or lacking in talent like Sharknado is. There's a difference between embracing a cliche/trope and taking a shit on one.

Mobutu Obama What I mean is when i talk to other people about The Room they don't find it funny and just think it's shit but there is definitely something special about The Room other than just that its funny. It's the film's pure sincerity and intent on being great that is so funny and the film has genuine heart beyond its awfulness. However many of these type of films are just quite funny and that's it but the Room is special

I mean, that's a thing too. There are good movies out there which take far too much pride in how clever they are to the point where it's actually irritating. That's what we call "pretentious". And then you have everything Mel Gibson has ever made which is trying to be pretentious, but usually ends up being camp instead. Basically, it's obvious that Gibson thinks his movies are the best thing since sliced bread, but they're objectively terrible (not to mention cringey).

There is a french word to describe a piece of art so bad that becomes good: "Nanar". That video talks more about it and can be complemented with yours: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pFlW49Fv9eY.html&ab_channel=Quetzal *note: is in Spanish.

note (from a french litt major): it's extremely outdated and familiar and used to also be used as jargon for "unsellable merchandise", it isn't a word that would come up in conversations :)

Uhm, actually it is quite a common word. I'm French and it's quite common to refer to a film as a "nanar". It pretty much boils down as a compliment for a bad, over-the-top movie that takes itself way too seriously and unexpectedly becomes hilarious. That's why The room is definitely a Nanar but sharknado is not, since it was purposely made as a caricature.

I would like to point out that this video does not discuss camp in its original context, that of LGBT subculture. Films like Rocky Horror or The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert do camp in ways that move beyond just being about tropes and self-awareness. They camp things like gender, which are not contained just within the film, but are far more real ideas. I think this misses out on the opportunity to historicize camp, and show the effect that minority communities can have on mass culture.

I feel like some famous horror movies of the 80s capture this perfectly, in both predator and the terminator whether its the over the top music or cheesy one liners they both don't feel out of place and the movies wouldn't be the same without them.

How are the Sharknado movies "so bad it's good" when everyone making the films are in on the joke. They know they are making a bad movie and that people will watch simply based in the title. Sharknado was made by The Asylum, which has made films like Snakes on a Train, the DaVinci treasure, 2 Transmorphers movies, AVH: Alien vs Hunter, Atlantic Rim, American Warships, Titanic 2, etc the list goes on. So many mockbusters. Why does Sharknado get so much attention when they also made Mega shark Vs Giant Octopus and Mega shark vs Crocosaurus and 2 headed Shark attack. I wish ppl would stop giving it credit as so bad it's good, when it was intentionally bad. A film which could be argued for "it's so bad it's good" is Birdemic 2. Most actors and crew were in on the joke, but James Nguyen still thinks he is making a movie to rival Hitchcock's The Birds. "They look good from a distance." Lol Other than that, I agree, good video.

Or The Room. Films that are campy but good embrace the genre and the tropes affectionately, with a hint of self-awareness and irony. Films that are just intentionally bad like Sharknado are made by people who embrace the over-the-top nature of the film without being affectionate about it. Films that everyone, except the director/creator, knows is really bad, but the director still takes seriously, like The Room, is when they try to make a great film in the most sincere way, but just fail, because they make it so over-the-top without embracing it, without understanding that it is in fact over-the-top, without self-awareness of its campy nature.

I like Sharknado because it is just so much fun. It says to the audience "You wanna see some over the top shit? Then let me show you!" It's not so bad it's good, it's just ridiculously over the top and that's what's great about it.

Another point to consider when thinking about why people like these kind of movies is that it makes you analyze the good and the bad We have great films as examples, that we use as a reference because of the story and technique they present, but that’s also true with bad films We take the pros and cons, and we develop our sense of art by analyzing them.
@raketnight

You just cannot analyze these, you just have to appreciate.
