This Nintendo Entertainment System was very kindly donated to the channel by Nidhoegger, one of my Patreon supporters.
It has a Tim Worthington RGB Mod installed and only outputs a garbled display and no sound! Something's not right, can I get to the bottom of it?
Let's see if I can repair it!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve

I must say that I watch many of these type of repair channels, But there's something about you specifically that I find the others don't have . You clearly have a deep and lengthy knowledge about these things but you come across as somebody who's just "having a go". I mean that in the nicest way possible and I must say that it's given me the inspiration to have a go at repairing a few of my own old consoles that I have stashed away . Wicked attempt mate, I wouldn't know where to start with that 😂 Putting it back to factory at the end was a great shout to test though, rules the mod out I think :)
@BillybobAndersson

I had a similar problem when installing the NESRGB in one of my NES. After the mod all I got was a garbeld screen and it was working fine before the mod. I removed the mod and the problem was still there. Luckily I had a spare NES so I switched the PPU and it was working fine, I then proceeded to switch parts so I could figure out what was faulty and it turned out that one of RAM chips on the NES went bad when I installed the mod. I replaced that with a RAM from another faulty NES and then it worked again.

Ah the NES Brother Steve! the flashing red light/black screen doesn't always relate to cartridge slot. It could also mean you have a bad CIC IC The 'Lock out Chip' Disconnect! pin 4 were it says Nintendo on it pin 4 is below the N there is 2/3 caps near the pin. IF it hasn't been done already that is. One other thing that could cause no game blank-screen, very common, the cart connector. Pull it of the board & Brasso the connections. If its not them then PPU is sadly brown bread. 👍🖖
@StezStixFix
@StezStixFix 2 года назад
Excellent information as always, brother Steve! Thank you. I'll give all that a go and see what happens! 😬
@wildstoo
@wildstoo 2 года назад
Yep, CIC fails either because the chip itself is faulty/dead or the connection between the cart and the ZIF socket is poor (this is an extremely, EXTREMELY common fault on front-loaders; the pins get bent over time as games are inserted/removed and eventually stop making reliable contact altogether). Either way, cut the pin Ratchet refers to. The CIC is absolutely nothing but trouble and disabling it is the smartest thing you can do. You lose no functionality by doing so, and gain a more reliable NES, although, if the failure was purely due to the CIC the red light would be flashing once per second. Might wanna get another game cart to test with too, just in case.
@-Gothicgirl-
@-Gothicgirl- 2 года назад
Mmh I would disable the lockout Chip. That's the best way
@lmfsilva3000
@lmfsilva3000 2 года назад
I fixed a few consoles by removing the leg of the CIC, with the blinking, blank screen, also sometimes booting but other times not even without removing the cart, so even if not's that, it's worth doing. Bonus is also no more PAL A and PAL B nonsense.
@ShadowcasterZero
@ShadowcasterZero 2 года назад
For cleaning the cart connectors, I recommend getting an NES cleaning kit from eBay or the like. You can still find one under $20 usd and it beats making connector soup, aka boiling the cart connector in hot water
@lelandclayton5462
@lelandclayton5462 2 года назад
I've repaired a few NES control decks. Lift pin 4 of the Lockout chip. If that doesn't work then switch out the PPU. If that doesn't work then it's the 72pin edge connector and that is a hard to find item. Granted there are tons on Amazon, eBay and such but those are cheaply made. They're also known as "The death grip edge connector".

My experience is that 99% of the time, undiagnosable problems are related to power supply. This is because brown-outs can cause almost any system to fail, and will continue to fail no matter how many things you check or fix. It's why I usually switch out the power supply as soon as I start getting cranky, unreliable hardware with no obvious causes for malfunction.

Nice job trying fixing this mess :-) Looks odd but you could have a dead PPU there :-( Btw, French NES are ideal candidates ;-) they have a RGB port (with crap RGB signal) and a nice RGB Scart. The NESRBG mod works perfectly in those. Add a Famicom CPU/PPU/Cristal and you get a 60Hz pal NES with no extra hole.
@RWL2012
@RWL2012 2 года назад
the *crap RGB signal* from the French NES is composite "converted" to RGB. I'm sure you knew that.
@TheDainerss
@TheDainerss 2 года назад
So here is my thoughts. First, get a cap replacement kit and a voltage regulator replacement from Console5 and get a second NES, test the second one first to make sure it works. Then install the mod in it and test again. This will 100% guarantee the mod is fine. Once that is done, you can start working on the original NES. Start with the voltage regulator and caps, even if that is not the ultimate problem, they should be replaced. Next test the PPU. You might want to get another PPU socket so swapping between the two systems is easier. First and foremost put the PPU from the non-functional NES into the working NES to see if it truly is a PPU issue. If there is an issue else where, the last thing you want to do is possibly fry another PPU.

And then went on and bought all new components to rebuild the entire board with the exception of the NES specific chips you can't get. I literally built my own NES to fix my NES. I wish I could attach pictures though. My board is a pretty blue. As a matter of fact, I have three of these boards. I used one. So I have two. a lot of scientists in the comments but as someone who has fixed more NESes than I care to admit to, let me add a plus one to the people saying to disable the CIC/Lockout chip and try again. I think it's pin 4, either lift the leg or just cut it. if it still won't boot the game then you can move on to further diagnosis. something else that might be helpful here is a flash cart or a repro test cartridge as this will help you test the onboard chips for faults. in my experience these systems are pretty hardy provided they haven't been abused, and my guess is the system works fine but the boot issue is a bad ZIF connection for the cart and a dirty edge connector on the cart. replace the ZIF and clean the cart, disable lockout, try again. it should work. probably the RGB mod was faulty which caused the original issues and led you down a rabbit hole.

Interesting. It's a mod and a system that can both be very finicky. Desoldering the PPU can easily go wrong if not using proper tools and proper technique. And even still, sometimes the PPU fails during removal even if proper tools and technique were used. I'd recap both the NES mainboard and especially make sure to replace the caps in the NES PSU / RF modulator. To rule out the cart slot, I'd get one of the cheap $10 replacements. I tried like hell to clean and retension and OEM one, but it wouldn't work right... just wouldn't. So I swapped in the $10 "junker" and it's worked perfect every single time. Not saying you need to keep it in there, but it can help. I'd also cut the necessary pin on the lockout "CIC" chip to disable it. Beyond all that, if it still doesn't work, you've likely either got a bad PPU, bad rams, or trace damage. I'd also carefully read over the install docs, to make sure any region specific / use case specific steps were followed. For example, when using an external 5V regular I'm not sure if you have to remove or disable anything on the mainboard to support that working properly or to prevent damage. There are also various jumpers, to be set for various use cases. Finally, ensuing the multi out is wired up properly is worth while.

Open the cartridge and check if it is really original, NES only work with original Nintendo cartridges, that one looking outside looks original, but we never know. There is a way to unlock the NES for non original Nintendo cartridges, you need to remove one of the legs or the chipset, can't remember exactly which one, I think was the top left one. The problem is almost certain to be in the 72pin cartridge connector because it´s way to easy to get the cartridge in and out. even if the red light is solid the game only have contact in the CIC chip and console but it does not mean all other pins have good contact. I have a console I thought was absolutely dead with the gray screen of death. turns out it was still the cartridge connector even if I changed it to another. but remember you have two rows of pins and when it goes this easy in and out the pins have bent in and become too weak. you could take a small hook and bend out the pins and then boil it in distilled water for 10 minutes. it should solve that issue

Could it simply be a sync issue? For RGB on nintendo multi-out there are three potential pins you can use as your source for sync: Composite, S-Video Luma and C-Sync. If the cable wires one of them to pin 20 on your SCART but that one isn't connected on the console side you will get a garbage picture. Also, looking at 7:22, isn't that a composite cable? I see three cables molded together. Did you verify that composite is supposed to be working on this? If I remember right NESRGB provides S-Video and composite as well but people might not bother actually hooking them up to the AV port if they only plan on using RGB.

When did they change from PPU (Picture Processing Unit) to GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)? Any ideas, just out of curiosity?
