There are many areas of the city that lack transit service. We've covered Utica Avenue, the restoration of the Rockaway Beach Branch, and today, we're gonna be talking about a Subway extension to the Throggs Neck neighborhood of the Bronx.

In my opinion, subway service should always be the first option when assessing an isolated neighborhood's needs, being that most people want to get to Manhattan directly. If this were to happen, I can already tell that Throggs Neck residents would be rejoicing in happiness.

I like this idea. When the T exists the Q can go to 125th and the T can go to Throggs Neck and there can be rush hour express service. Or, the Interborough Express can be extended to Throggs Neck, and can also be extended from its Brooklyn terminal in Sunset Park to either to Barclays Center or DeKalb Ave (B)(Q)(R).

The Q should go to The Bronx instead, since the T will serve all of the 2nd Avenue Line, and the Q serves some important transfer points, such as Times Square, Herald Square, etc. I'm pretty sure most Bronx commuters would like to have a 1 seat ride to Midtown.

There are just a lot of underserved areas in the Bronx that lack a subway like Co Op City. Throggs Neck is one of them and it would be cool to see one go there
@original__gmebvy

Funny enough the 6 line was supposed to end in Co-Op City. The city had a financial crisis in the 70’s (partially due to the Bronx is Burning debacle happening in the South Bronx, among other issues of the era) that put the brakes on that project. I say they should extend the line to Co-Op, because taking the bus from Pelham Bay Park to Co-Op is awful, especially with that on-ramp to I-95, it takes so long just to get on or off over there, you would think there was a big car accident on it’s how slow the traffic is. Ironic enough whenever there is an actual accident, the highway is usually empty lol.

I definitely agree with a Throgs Neck line, however a combination of things must take place. They are as follows: 1. I would create a Bronx to Queens line parallel to the Q44 SBS (as the proposed Throgs Neck line would connect with the Q44 SBS at the Throgs Neck Shopping Center) with one line to Kingsbridge via Fordham (below the Bx39, Bx22 and Bx9 routes) and one line to Yankee Stadium, where the Throgs Neck line would also operate along. 2. The Throgs Neck line would go Crosstown below 161st Street in The Bronx, then I would have it turn South as a 5th Avenue line in Manhattan and let it terminate at Herald Square - Penn Station. 3. From the 5th Avenue line, I would create an EXPRESS to Co Op City which would spur at 125th Street, travel below 3rd Avenue and Boston Road in The Bronx, and below the Bx21 bus route to the Albert Einstein Hospital at Eastchester Road, then continue Northeast to Co Op City below Stillwell Avenue and terminate at Bay Plaza Mall.

Its a really good idea, but I don't think it would ever happen unfortunately knowing the MTA. But what would be ideal that would help, is that they combine the Metro North expansion project, along with the Interboro Express, the Rockaway Beach Branch and possibly things like the abandoned LIRR Montauk Branch and the soon to be shuttle Atlantic Avenue branch into New Yorks own "Overground" type system "The Upway?" with a rapid transit type service at the same or close price points as the subway. At least then, combined with your idea of an SBS for the BX42, would give those commuters a much faster link to midtown than the 6, as well as a ton of people in areas that are currently transit deserts. The idea could be expanded even further since there's definitely capacity on many of the LIRR and MNRR routes that could support sharing tracks with a service like this with sufficient signaling upgrades, and Omni could put it all together with easy out of system connections and transfers. This I think is something that could get done at costs that aren't prohibitive, and there's certainly an an opportunity to do it right now with both the plans of the MNRR expansion, the interboro and the ongoing discussions of Rockaway Beach (and the fact that would be cheapest to construct being reconnected to the LIRR. Connect all 3 systems with a PATH type of rapid transit rail road stock and you got a NY Overground.
@MysticTransit
@MysticTransit 2 года назад
I really like your idea of turning NYC's Commuter/Regional Rail network into something similar to the London Overground. I've talked about this in many of my videos. It would be great to have an improved regional rail system, not only will it be less expensive to serve some areas with Regional Rail, but with fare integration, it would lead to excellent connections between buses, the subway, and the LIRR/MNR.
@mzxeternal
@mzxeternal 2 года назад
@@MysticTransit and there's the capacity to do it on many of those commuter lines with signaling improvements. Hell look at the rush hour patterns of some of the branches. LIRR Port Washington has trains distanced a couple of times during rush hour 3 minutes apart (there's a 4:21PM and a 4:24 PM for example, but not many of them) but if they can do that for a couple of trains during rush hour, that means they certainly have capacity to run a RAPID transit service along the line with existing LIRR service throughout the day, not only in the off peaks which is easy, but even in the peak periods. Utilizing that underused capacity on lines that already exist would be massive, and would be a simple solution to serving a bulk of the transit deserts across the city, especially adding in the Metro North Expansion in the Bronx as well as the Interboro. And it can be done on many of those lines without impacting the suburban commuter services already using them. And with interboro on the drawing board, this would be the perfect time to plan for such an idea, since it can utilize a similar type of Rapid Transit Rail Road stock, and equipment moves needed can be done via existing LIRR and Metro North trackage. And I bet the whole thing would cost less than all 4 phases of Second Avenue haha.
@shadowmamba95

@@MysticTransitI agree on MNRR. Specifically, I want an implementation of regional rail at the Park Avenue Main Line from GCT to Wakefield, as it is able to achieve nearly the same effect as a whole Bronx 3rd Avenue Subway with a much lower price tag. I think the Second Avenue Subway, when demand calls for it, should be the one to extend to Throgs Neck. Since it is likely that the 125th Street branch would be built beforehand, that section would become a shuttle as a result.

I truly agree that Throggs Neck is in dire need of subway service. It really is shocking how it is one of many NYC neighborhoods that have little-to-no subway service whatsoever, along with Maspeth and Southern Jamaica. Here's what I propose: The MTA should consider building a branch line that runs along the Cross Bronx Expressway and into Throggs Neck. From that, the 9 train should be reintroduced, along with a new 8 train service. The 9 train should run alongside the 1 from South Ferry up until 168th Street, after which it'll split off from the 1 and travel along the Cross Bronx Expressway and into Throggs Neck, terminating at Locus Point - Harding-Pennyfield Avs. The 8 train should run alongside the 6 until it reaches Parkchester, where it'll meet up with the 9, and will split from the 6 to run with the 9 down to Locust Point in Throggs Neck. I imagine both the 8 and the 9 trains will share R62/A's with the 1 and 6 currently, but in the future will run with R262's. I imagine they will also be interchanged at a brand new yard at Silver Beach.

The new mayor Eric Adams said that south Bronx definitely needs Transportation besides those buses before he got swornd in the office two years ago. The 6 is by itself on Lexington, anything here would not affect the 4 or 5 normally.
@shadowmamba95
@shadowmamba95 6 месяцев назад
But we would want to keep the trains frequent since the 6 is currently the only Lexington Avenue service to serve East Bronx. In fact, the best things to do in the Bronx are to remove interlining in the Bronx (i.e. 3 trains to Dyre, 5 trains to Jerome), fixing the MNRR, and have other extensions as well (6 and D to Co Op City, 1 to 261st Street). Now, I am one of some people that oppose creating a whole 3rd Avenue Line in the Bronx, elevated or not, because we can implement regional rail into Metro-North to get nearly the same effect for far cheaper (service from Grand Central to Wakefield). However, once there is enough demand for Bronx subway extension, the 2nd Avenue subway (which would have the 125th Street branch built by then), would head to 3rd Avenue until 161st Street, then head east to Throgs Neck via 163rd Street. This will allow us to kill two birds with one stone in terms of hitting transit deserts where needed, and allow us to spend money more wisely than just extending the Second Avenue Subway to 3rd Avenue in the Bronx.

I would love for Throggs Neck to have a subway line. When I worked in Manhattan, it took me only 3 days to realize that it was better to ride my bike to a train station and lock it up, than to use the Bx40/42. My legs are just far more reliable than the bus, period. But the people of Throggs Neck are way too car centric. (Please note that original proposal for a Throggs Neck subway line was made before WWII, when most Americans didn't have automobiles.) They will fight a proposed subway line tooth and nail. If it's elevated, they'll complain about lost parking spaces. If it's underground they'll complain about the temporary loss of parking during construction. I know this because many won't even patronize a local business if there's no onsite parking. And if they converted the Bx40/42 to an SBS route, once again lost parking. If you don't believe me, just check out the opposition to the proposed rezoning of Bruckner Boulevard. So once again, a Throggs Neck subway line is never going to happen. Too many NIMBYs in the neighborhood. And believe me, I say this this with no enthusiasm whatsoever.

Great idea but a huge issue would be layups to the yard and put-ins from the yard. Both the 6 and the 8 line would use the same equipment from Westchester Yard where the 6 trains are stored. For the 6 is it's pretty easy, a put in can either go from Pelham or Parkchester the same for layups to Westchester Yard. However for the 8 train it's a long put in and layup from Throggs Neck to Westchester Yard. This is besides the X number trains that can be stored on the tail tracks. The only solution is possibly a spur track connecting both the 6 and 8 lines to Westchester Yard to cut the deadheading times for put ins and lay ups. This will give more operational flexibility for one train go another terminal should something happen at Pelham. I do think also expansion of the subway should be prioritized to areas of the City with no subway service and connect to Staten Island as well to totally make a "Five Borough Subway System"

Here’s a solution i came up with. Create a new yard for the 8 train but it should be a small yard like Fresh Pond Road Lenox Avenue and unionport yards used by M 3 and 5 trains respectively. This yard could storage up to 14 extra trains. This yards main purpose is for storage for the surplus amounts of 8 train fleet and maybe minor repairs the Defacto yard is westchester yard. Evening Weekend Late Night trains would head down to westchester yard. The fleet I believe should be R142s/R142As by having the R262 order go to the 4/5 and displaced R142s/R142As being reassigned to 6/8. Also they should have the R142s/R142As switch routes at city hall sent them in a pattern like 6 8 6 8 6 8. This could be a alternative to the yard issue.

i think this is a great idea, another idea that i propose is extending the 7 line further into queens, if you see how crowded main can get during morning rush hours, it be looking like times square but underground, i think the 7 should be extended to either bayside or auburndale, now lots of people might say "but you have the long island rail road and Q13, Q12, and Q28 busses that run to main street" me as a local myself that lives near these lines, i can say that the timing on most of these busses are atrocious , and not everyone can afford to take the long island rail road on rush hour services, lets be honest, the long island railroad can get pretty expensive during rush hour, going up to 6.50, as the subway is only 2.75, doing the math you would spend 13 dollars a day on the long island rail road back and forth on the port Washington line, for 30 days, more then 300 dollars, as for the subway, its 5.50 a day and 165 for 30 days, more than a $100 difference, extending the 7 down northern blvd or to francis lewis would help more then 1000 7 train commuters and reduce crowding at main street terminal. Then again this is just my idea and probally will never be used, but i wanted to just share my idea because why not?

I was thinking that entire Pelham line should be quadruple tracked, with the 8 train making all local stops meanwhile the 6 train go express making express stops in both directions between 3rd Avenue-149th Street and Pelham Bay Park. With this change, a few big things would happen: One: The current existing local stop of Westchester Square-East Tremont Avenue should be converted into a new express stop. Two: from the existing station of Pelham Bay Park, the 6 train would be extended between there and Eastchester with brand new local stations which are Hutchinson River Parkway (connection available to Metro North), Bay Plaza, Co-op City-Bartow Avenue, and finally, Eastchester-Boston Road. Three: Between on the new 6 train extension, two Pelham Shuttles (one shuttle service between Eastchester and City Island, and another between Eastchester and Orchard Beach during summer days only between Memorial Day and Labor Day) would run along with the 6 train. Four: during summer season only, 6 trains could run between Pelham Bay Park and Orchard Beach. Why or why not that would all be an ambitious but more interesting idea?

I like the proposal between Hunts Point Ave and the Throgs Neck neighborhood with only a slight change. Rather than allowing the proposed 8 train to terminate at Miles Ave (E Tremont Ave), here are my stops: Hunts Point Ave - BX5, BX6 (SBS), BX19 {rush hour express} Boynton Ave Metcalf Ave Rosedale-Soundview Aves - BX27 White Plains Rd - BX5, BX36, BX39 {rush hour express} Castle Hill Ave - BX5, BX22 Zerega Ave - BX60 (fantasy bus line) Brush Ave - Q44 (SBS), Q50 Balcom Ave E Tremont Ave - BX40, BX42 {rush hour express} Country Club {all stops} Bronxonia {all stops} Edgewater {all stops} Locust Point - BX8 {terminus} I hope this proposal isn’t too shabby! I’m also assuming that since my 8 line from Hunts Point Ave to Locust Point is longer than the 6 line from Hunts Point Ave to Pelham Bay Park, that it would need two extra stations. Either way, it’s a great idea and while I personally don’t really see a necessity for another subway line, it’s a great idea nonetheless!

I'd rather continue extending the R line after it reaches LaGuardia and have that go to the Bronx instead! In a prior deinterlining video, the R would be cut back to City Hall, so it wouldn't be a terribly long line. EDIT (It's been a year): I support a different deinterlining plan now, but apparently the tight S-curve south of City Hall can handle a max of 20 TPH. Meaning if we can push 36 TPH north of City Hall, then long story short, the R line above would be no different.

@@CR1Creative I stand by my proposal for the Myrtle Ave line, which is connecting it with the deinterlined 8th Ave local service. So, a new right-of-way between Myrtle Ave-Bway and Canal St (A/C/E), via Myrtle Ave and Downtown Brooklyn. This extended 8th Ave local would run between 168 St and Metropolitan Ave. With that in mind, I agree with also extending the M to LGA from the Metropolitan Ave side, because the goal with my proposal above is to better connect northern Queens with downtown Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. After that, however, any further extension would make the line way too long. I'll leave Bronx service to the IBX.

The narrator of this video makes a very compelling point. An extension of an existing Subway to an unserviced areas such as throgs neck represents the best option of connecting that neighborhood with Manhattan and other points. A bus service would not be sufficient. An extension of an existing IRT line is indeed the most viable option in terms of logistics and construction. While this is all a great idea and I and many people are thrilled and excited about this prospect, the reality is that it boils down to two major components which are politics and money. Are there any naysayers and NIMBY people who do not want a Subway coming into their neighborhood? What is the political landscape with regards to funding a project? Even if there is no nimbyism and no opposition and politicians for the support this, are there funds available for this massive project? It could be a possibility but it all stems on how far elected officials will be willing to go back for this as well as securing the funding and obtaining a timely start of the construction and a timely completion. Time will only tell. Hopefully this will be something that will be given serious consideration. Hopefully the narrator this video documents all this and perhaps submits all these ideas to a planning arm of the nycta/mta. This is one of many great proposals for Transit improvement in New York City that he has proposed and the mta/nycta should provide serious consideration as well as elected officials in Albany and Washington DC.

There actually was a proposal prior to the IND Second System, to serve Throggs Neck using the IRT Flushing line, and the former LIRR Whitestone Branch. The IRT would've taken over the LIRR Whitestone Branch, and connected it to the Flushing line. The branch would've been upgraded, double tracked, and then would've crossed the East River using a massive vertical lift drawbridge into The Bronx, and would've followed a route from Brush Avenue to Throggs Neck, similar to your proposal. Keep in mind, this plan predates the building of the Matilda Cuomo (Whitestone) Bridge, and Throggs Neck Bridge. Due to the costs of converting the Whitestone Branch into a subway line, and the War Department (predecessor to the Defense Department) not wanting a low level movable bridge in that part of the East River, those plans were scrapped.

Yes, I really love the idea of the #8 Train going to Throggs Neck. The Bronx has too many transit desserts. The Q needs to be extended to the Bronx via a new Third Avenue Elevated line up to Fordham Plaza or Gun Hill Road. Metro North is too expensive ($18 round trip during peak hours) and a good chunk of the people who live in the Bronx can barely afford the $2.75 base fare. I doubt the MTA will lower fares on the Metro North to make it more equivalent to the subway and bus fares. More subway lines are needed in the Bronx and the outer boroughs

It could come off the"D line, which runs on 161st Street, but turns on to Grand Concourse. It could run via 161st to a certain point (I don't have a map in front of me).until it has to turn to get to 163rd Street, which is the main street in the area until it intersects Hunts Point Avenue. Connections with the future "Q" line will be made at 3rd Avenue than a connection with the 2/5 than #6. A similar route to Throggs Neck would be built. The reason why this is a slightly better plan, is because passengers would now have better transfer options between the various services in the Bronx.. With your plan, you adding more service to an over frequent line. And it is north of Hunts Point where the service is needed the most. But I'm going to take it a step further. Close the entire Grand Concourse Line and build to branches to replace it: Third Avenue and the branch out to Throggs Neck. The reason why I propose this plan in this way, is because Third Avenue is far enough to not compete with the #4. The B and D will become like a Bronx Crosstown line. Meanwhile, when ever the MTA decides to extends the "Q or T" to the Bronx, it could operate via 3rd Avenue.

I had made a concept in Brand New Subway where a new A-Division line, signed the (10), would run along Tremont Avenue from Grand Concourse to its other terminal at the Bruckner Expwy in Throggs Neck

My idea was to extend the 7 to run Via Tremont Av

Let the 10 trains run to treatment Ave in the Bronx to Throggs neck village Bronx elevated lines. Let the 8 Thrid Avenue Elevated line run by it self between Gun hill road Clearmount Webster Boston road Bronx and 149 street connecting to the 2 5 trains free transfers and 138 street free transfers to the 6 Pelham line.

Even NYC Ferry's Soundview ferry extention to Throgs Neck is failure. Ferry drop/off pickup on Ferry Point Park and people on Harding Av, other side of Trump Gulf Course cannot get on ferry. After I emal, they need shuttle bus, shuttle bus is for going to parking lot which is useless. They need to add shuttle bus to Lafayette/Hutschison, Harding Av on end of Bx42 bus.

Since the proposed route of the 8 above Lafayette Avenue borders St. Raymond's Cemetery, I think the cemetery management might be slightly NIMBY-ish about it.

The 8 is gonna definitely run back on the 3rd Ave Elevated line back between Gun hill road and Queens plaza connecting to the N W 7 11 trains 🚃 I'm telling you. Bring the 10 trains over there between Hunts point and the throggs Neck 🧣. I love 💕 your opinion s it's sounds cool. Just bring the 10 trains over there and leave the 8 trains out of this one. The 8 trains could definitely go back to the 3rd Avenue Elevated line.

@@leecornwell5632 Question would it even make sense to have double digit IRT routes. They got rid of double letter routes for a reason

@@Amiri_Francis No the regular number s iRT lines are definitely fine. They just definitely need to add extra iRT subway Elevated lines like the 10 trains could run through Hunts point and throggs Neck Avenue and the 8 trains could definitely run between Gun hill road and 125 street connecting to the 4 5 6 Q T lines and the Metro North railroad. Let the Pelham 6 line be extended to co op city mall barto Bronx to connect to the Metro North railroad Connecticut . You have to remember the Connecticut trains is having four new stations Morrison Ave and parkchester hunts point and co op city mall barto Bronx.
