** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We have been inundated by recommendations to try this new puzzle by siron2133 which combines killer sudoku with Tetris. It makes for a really original puzzle with some brilliant ideas and logic.
Play the puzzle at the link below:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Each tetris shape represents a cage of cells of exactly that shape (ie the shape cannot be rotated or flipped) and the tetris shape must be inside of its corresponding cage. Cages of tetris shapes with the same colour have the same total. Digits may not repeat in a cage. Cages may not overlap each other.

Thank you for the feature Simon! This was a very pleasant surprise and a great solve as usual. This puzzle was inspired by the tetris themed puzzles in the game "The Witness". Thanks to everyone who recommended this and I am glad you enjoyed the puzzle

27:00 Simon forgets the two-piece cage (already proved to be 78) in the top right box. If the top of the T shape occupied R1C7, it could not be 7 or 8 (nor can it be 9). So this T cage contains only one 'high' digit, the three others are at most 456 and the maximum total would be 4+5+6+8 = 23, so that actually disproves the possibility of the T shape touching the top row.

@@rickpgriffin Yah, he missed that a couple puzzles ago as well, when not realizing two 3's were already allocated to a different colored line. Add in some coloring instead of using his pencil marks, and pretty much standard Simon. Using harder logic then needed to solve the puzzle. At least he did realize the top digit could not be a 7 or an 8 eventually this time. Probably because he had to.

I only recently started watching daily (to fall asleep 😅) but I got recommended videos every now and then for years, I feel like it was not very long ago that Simon was getting really excited about puzzles with 3... Or 2... Or zero(!) given digits... Now he's like, I don't even see the given digits anymore 😂 Really shows the skill development of the setters as well. It really is mind blowing what they manage to find.

this is a 3/5 difficulty. you would also see it as a 3/5 if we didn't spend thirty minutes watching Simon completely ignore the square piece in box 4, which can only contain one of 12 and one of 456

At 33:55, Simon finally looked at the 2x2 piece in box 4. It's too bad that he didn't look at the effect that had on the overall box 4 total. He'd have seen that the other bits must all be maximised. The 456s must be 56s, and the 12 must be a 2. Then, the other two digits not part of the 2x2 must be an 89-pair, and that tells you where the 2x2 is situated in the box (to the right).

I sort of found the 8-9 pair in column 1 in box 4 a bit sooner based off the math of the box. The tetris block is 100% contained within the box, and accounts for four cells and 15 of the 45 total sum of the box. Two of the cells belong to another 15, minus the value that sticks out into R6C4. That puts the value of the remaining three cells of box 4 to be at least 19, with one cell (R6C1) being a 1 or 2. That not only gives you that 2, but the 8-9 pair that must go in column 1.

73:28. Oh the difficulty was off the charts for me. For how quickly I determined the cage values, I was thinking it'd be easier. Positions of many cages were not too difficult but others took me time to figure (for example) that cage cannot have a 9 but if I put it there there will be a 9. But took me a while to figure out a 9 must go in the cage if it was there. On the other hand, the 789 cage I had set and placed the 9 in seconds. I think the wide range of difficulty amongst the cages was more awe-inspiring that the difficulty of the difficult cages. 8.5/10

I would never attempt one of these puzzles. I just can’t wrap my mind around how to start. But I always feel so smart when I spot something before Simon, like the 7-8 in box 5. 😂 I also didn’t understand the 3 pencil marks in box 1, which he did “by sudoku” from the 3 in box 3. I couldn’t understand why they couldn’t have been in r1 of box 1. Neither could Simon, apparently, when he went back to them 🤣

@@RichSmith77 ah my first read , the "Tetris shape" was referring to to the killer cage or the DD outline/shape. Which further confused the killer cage w/I killercage so,I took to mean the shape must be included in the box which nixeed the 5x1.

I suppose, if the setter of a puzzle had a specific solution path in mind that _didn't_ require you to avoid creating a deadly pattern in the grid, they would have included something for you to discover that would make that deadly pattern impossible anyway -- as long as you do not short-circuit it, so that by the time you solve the digit somewhere in the puzzle that rules out the deadly pattern, it's too late because you've already assumed the consequences of filling it in. I bet it's possible to set a puzzle deliberately such the _only_ way to solve it is actually to avoid creating a deadly pattern, though ......
@stangerrits6712

I solved such a puzzle a while ago, somewhere on the CtC Discord server. Messes with your head, you needed to make deductions and place pencil marks to avoid such deadly patterns.

They featured a puzzle a couple of years ago where it was supposedly only human solvable by using uniqueness. A computer had been used to prove it only had one solution.
