Fun fact: here in Italy some of Calvino's works are labeled as children's literature (even The Baron in the Trees) and teachers make us read them during the last years of primary school!

'The Fire Next Time' by Baldwin is amazing. An amazing, short nonfic book about blackness in the 1960s.

I just started reading Nabokov's 'Pale Fire', and I think I can already see some of the same nerdy playfulness in this book as in Calvino's 'In a Winter's Night a Traveler'. I hope it continues like this!

A queer book I reccomende is Sputnik Sweethearth by Haruki Murakami summery: Sumire is in love with a woman seventeen years her senior. But whereas Miu is glamorous and successful, Sumire is an aspiring writer who dresses in an oversized second-hand coat and heavy boots like a character in a Kerouac novel. Sumire spends hours on the phone talking to her best friend K about the big questions in life: what is sexual desire, and should she ever tell Miu how she feels for her? Meanwhile K wonders whether he should confess his own unrequited love for Sumire. Then, a desperate Miu calls from a small Greek island: Sumire has mysteriously vanished...

I always finish your book videos with a few more bookmarks in my 'books to buy' folder than when it started - it is forever growing even without your influence! Anyway, this video came at a perfect time as today I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole looking around for queer classic literature (which was a tangent from my history course for uni) but I would definitely love to see a queer book recs video from you. Two that I found today which have definitely made their way onto my list to buy was Maurice by E.M Forster (published posthumously and may have possibly been an influence for Lawrence's Lady Chatterly's Lover) and Fried Green Tomatoes by Fannie Flagg (my family owned the movie ages ago but I don't think I ever watched it unfortunately - never knew it was an adaptation or queer for that matter). I know you're not a booktuber but I still love your book content so much - please, keep it coming! :)

I love Calvino. Cosmicomics (which I think contains the stories in The Distance of the Moon plus a few other similar ones) was the first work of his I read and I was immediately hooked. I hope you enjoy The Baron in the Trees; it's quite good. Not sure if you've read them, but if you like The Baron in the Trees, The Nonexistent Knight and The Cloven Viscount are kind of similar.

You should read the well of loneliness by radclyff hall, published in 1928. it’s a heart wrenching presentation of lesbianism, and one of the first books in England openly alluding to transsexuality. it’s a bit longer of a read, so I think you can really warm into it, and because of its length, the emotional weight has a lot of time to build to a crescendo.

Hi Emma! I don't remember if you have read "Girl, women, other" by Bernardine Evaristo but it shows the intersection through different generations about race, class, gender, identities... I really liked it because even with the amount of pages, it is one of those light lectures, it's very dynamic 😊
