it wasnt just a greek resistance. The greek revolt of 1821 was lead mostly by Arvanites. Like for example the people Mr History mentioned were Arvanites. So it was a collaboration between albanians of greece and greeks.

Greek words aren't really that hard to read tbh. It only took me one afternoon in the "Classical Greek" club in my college to learn how to read Greek Orthography. But then again most monolingual Anglophones only struggle with Greek pronunciation cos their being held back by the foolishness that is the English language and it's schizophrenic rules of pronunciation, so you can't really fault them for their mispronounciation. 🤷🏽‍♂️
@georgios_5342
@georgios_5342 3 года назад
@@momo-cchi5978 That's true, in Greek every letter is read the same way always, unless it's a part of a combination of two, then it loses its own and the combination is pronounced. But that combination is also always pronounced the same way.
@momo-cchi5978
@momo-cchi5978 3 года назад
@@georgios_5342 Honestly, apart from Greeks being too stubborn to add a letter or two to their alphabet to make it more practical, their language has to be one of the most easy and efficient ones out there. Orthography-wise of course. And the letter are so damn mesmerising to look at! Everytime I look at a passage in Greek it makes me feel like I'm looking at ancient spell book or a grimoire and that just speaks to inner fantasy loving child self. 😂
@georgios_5342
@georgios_5342 3 года назад
@@momo-cchi5978 you know you're kinda right about that, but as you know, spelling conventions are hard to overcome. The Greek script used to be quite complex even until the 80s for historical reasons, and getting rid of that at the official level saw quite the backlash! Greek used to have three accents, then reduced to two and finally one. However all those only made sense until the 4th AD century, when phonemic vowel length was lost and the tones stopped having any difference whatsoever. Also, a century later, the word-initial h sound was lost, but we still kept around the daseia (h) sign over vowels to signify that it was there until the 80s. Its only practicality was theoretical, as you could only see it in compound words from then on (for example, όσιος(ósios)=holy, but it also had that h symbol in older Greek. So, adding the preposition από(apó), meaning far or completely, you don't get αποσίωση (aposíosi) but αφοσίωση (aphosíosi). So this is where the h shows up. If you know French, this might seem familiar. Several ways to right the same sound (o/au/eau/aux/eaux, or é/ai) and many older spelling conventions like the circonflexe accent (where there used to be an s, like hôpital instead of hospital, and île instead of isle) as well as the silent h all exist until today in French! And about English, I don't even have to say a word. The phonetic system is a mess, combining the pronunciation of numerous source languages but retaining original spelling. So, alas Greek isn't doing that bad on that front 😂. Also, I once thought of Greek adding certain letters, like b for μπ, d for ντ, g for γκ/γγ, j for τζ, y or ç for τσ and a letter for the u sound. I can think of two reasons why that hasn't been done 1.Historical continuity. If they changed these to be totally phonetic, a whole more stuff would also be changed to the point where earlier Greek would seem alien, like σμ changing to ζμ, middle consonant between 3 vanishing when not pronounced like πέμπτος becoming πέμτος and ευ/αυ changing to εβ/εφ/αβ/αυ, even though the pronunciation can be understood from the following letter. All these changes would make it a mess to distinguish certain words and would also mean needless updating of official papers, books etc. 2. Allophones. Allophones are different sounds that are however interpreted as the same in meaning in a certain language. So for example, you might notice ki and ko make a different sound of k, but those two are allophones, because even if you mispronounce them, the same meaning will be conveyed, just the other person will thing you're a foreigner. In Greek, such was the case for μπ, ντ, and γκ/γγ until very recently, even until the end of the 20th century in Athens and even today in several parts of Greek and Cyprus, where they aren't only pronounced b, d g but also mb, nd, ng without changing the meaning. This is because they're made up of mp, nt and gk respectively, but the latter letter changes and absorbs the first. Why change the orthography of those when many people still speak like that? Fun fact, you might be shocked by this, but several extra letters existed by the Byzantine period! Indeed, u had a single letter of merged o and u, that had both an uppercase and a lowercase version during Medieval Greek. Today it can still be found in some old road signs and on a cookie brand named Παπαδόπουλου for the two ουs, but after 1821 newfound interest in the ancients made this letter disappear. And it also makes perfect sense, because it might not be a pretty common sound in Greek, but it's the masculine/neuter genitive suffix for a big class of nouns and most of the adjectives! (So for example, "of the white horse" is του λευκού αλόγου so you can see this gets redundant)

To be more precise there are no real Greeks in Athens while you are looking for them in the villages of Albania, Greece is composed 70% of Illyrian Pelasgian Albanian autochton, 15% Lebanese, 10% Turkish, 5% Slav, Albanian language is the oldest language in the world, it is unique, it is the only autochthonous language in the Balkans that belongs to Illyrian, many Albanian names today originate from Illyrian kings, queens and tribes (Genti, Teuta, Taulant, Ilir, etc.), while the Greek tribute came later from Lebanon and brought the alphabet "Phoenician" which is similar to the Hellenic, this alphabet was later modified by the Roman Empire inventing the Hellenic language for the Greeks, the Hellenic language was used more for international trade routes with other countries like English today but the basic language spoken in the Illyrian civilizations was the Illyrian language, gradually the Hellenes erased any trace of the Illyrian language written on the walls of Illyrian cities in the Hellenic language invented by the Romans

I've been to athens, crete and santorini (Thera) and *its the BEST most amazing vacation I've ever had* The geography and the people is like paradise!!! Unbelievable why not all people go there, i would honestly move there if i knew how to speak greek. I speak 3 languages so adding a 4th one would be a challenge but i think i might do it! Greece is absolutely beautiful if you ever go to santorini try the volcano filtered beer they make, it is the best you will ever drink, but expensive lol. Every experience there is amazing!

Just something about ΙΧΘΥΣ for the people that don't know. ΙΧΘΥΣ means "fish" in greek but during the roman times it was used as a code so that someone could enter the catacombs under rome where christians would hide (they were hunted by the romans), ΙΧΘΥΣ is an acronyn: Ι Χ Θ Υ Σ Η Ρ Ε Ι Ω Σ Ι Ο Ο Τ Ο Σ Υ Σ Η Υ Τ Ρ Σ Ο Σ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ meaning "Jesus" ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ meaning "Christ" ΘΕΟΥ (theou) meaning "god's" ΥΙΟΣ meaning son (not to be confused with ΙΟΣ meaning: virus) ΣΩΤΗΡ (in modern Greek: ΣΩΤΗΡΑΣ) meaning savior So ΙΧΘΥΣ means: Jesus Christ, God's son, (my/our) savior.

Rigas fereos was a true man looking for our country to be free,l wish he could see it, rather than living he was sentenced to death by the Austrians because of his activities before the Napoleonic wars and they were afraid rigas would cause a french revolution in the Balkans. History has its up and down but as u said we have passed many downs and up and we will overcome this crisis as all the overs Side note: Our national anthem actually talks about how Greece will go downhill but it rises, when l got older l to understand the why Nc video btw

Greece was not just the part which is now. Most of the Byzantine territory from the times of Basil II, were Greeks. Some also, were Armenians and Slavs, but still, most of them were Greeks.
