I love Slovenia. A tiny marvel with mountains, lakes, caves, castles and blue sea.

As a Czech, I feel a relatively strong relationship with Slovenia. We Czechs and Slovenians have Slavic roots, language and mentality, but at the same time we have quite visible cultural, architectural and genetic influences of German/Austrian entities. I have never been to Slovenia, but from the things I have seen and heard, it seems to me that we really have a lot in common, it even seems to me that more than we Czechs have with Poles and Slovenians with Croats or Serbs. Zdravím do Slovinska naše braty!

From what Ik there is a strong argument to be made that Slovenians were sort of a bridge between west/south Slavs in their early history, large chunks of today's Austria used to be the original Slovene homeland and ik Czechia used to stretch further south into what is todays Austria and some people posit that they were both part of Samo's Kingdom.

Slovenes dont probably realise that, cause we arent direct neighbors, but our Czech and Slovene histories and cultures are incredibly similar. Im no expert on this but i would say Slovenes have more similar history and culture to Czechs rather than Croats or Serbs. Holly Roman Empire -> Austrian Empire -> Austria-Hungary. Then Czechs formed Czechoslovakia and Slovenes formed Kingdom with Serbs and Croats. Then both countries had socialism, then both went relatively early NATO and the EU. We both have a lot of Germanic cultural influence, Poles call us Czechs Slavic Germans while others call Slovenes as Slavic Austrians/Swiss. We are two most developed Slavic nations, with this kinda practical, relaxed, cold-headed, peaceful mentality focused on well-being and development. Also Jože Plečnik had a huge influence on the architecture in Prague, he for example re-developed Prague Castle which is one of the most famous heritage we have. Also the hilly landscape is quite similar, although we Czechs dont have sea and rather small mountains.

@@Aggoenix Res je, kar ste zapisali. Slovenci smo vedno imeli tesne kulturne vezi s Čehi. Češka in Slovenija sta gospodarsko najuspešnejši državi med Slovani z visokim življenjskim standardom itd.

From what we're taught in history class in Slovenia there was a massive amount of opposition to joining the rest of the South Slavs but we reluctantly did due to the fact that Serbia had international recognition while Slovenia & Croatia had none due to being just regions of Austria-Hungary essentially. It was more of a "we kinda have to..." rather than "YAAAY WE LOVE EACH OTHER :) " but in fairness there wasn't any deep animosity either.
@Aggoenix
@Aggoenix 2 месяца назад
You should have joined Czechoslovakia hah. I think you have far more similar culture and mentality to Central Europeans/Western Slavs rather than this South Slavic/Balkan vibe. We also managed to get loose from Austria Hungary in 1918, even though we had fully indipendent Czech kingdom since around 12th century and then semi-indipendent electoral kingdom in Holly Roman Empire. And we both had relatively a lot of cultural influence from Germanic countries. And Plečnik was massively influential on Prague architecture. Also this cold-headed peaceful bit introverted mentality focused on well-being, peace and development is very similar. Serbs, Croats and even Slovaks, maybe even Poles tend to be more hot-blooded and "slavic" in my experience than Slovenes and Czechs.

The notion that Slovenia has anything to do with Switzerland is yet another blatant lie created to make Slovenia look better than it actually is. Fact is that there have been _no_ historic ties between Slovenia and Switzerland historically and that just because they share a mountain range, they don’t automatically have something to do with each other. And when it comes to Czechia, no, we don’t share anything with them nowadays either. Completely distanced from each other in the past 100 years.

Not really. Considering Yugoslavia's war industry and relatively strong (or hyped?) army, Slovenia was pretty safe during the cold war. Otherwise it could be taken over by Soviets as a buffer zone, similar to Hungary, Czeckoslovakia, Poland etc. That's one part of a history that has strong advantages and equally strong disadvantages.

Is Russia not considered a Slavic country? Doesn't Russian oil make it richer than Slovenia? By the way I loved the Brinjevic I was given by my Slovenian hosts when visiting this beautiful country
@deutschegeschichte4972
@deutschegeschichte4972 4 месяца назад
It said per capita, not as a whole. Obviously Russia is the richest out of the Slavic countries, but much of the population lives in poverty with poor wages. Slovenia is richer per capita, which in simplest terms, basically means that the average person owns more wealth than a person from a different Slavic country. Obviously it gets more complex than that, but that is all that is really needed to understand the basics.
