has to be one of the most visually pleasing aircraft of all time. Despite Aeroplane Heaven's huge lack of support and ongoing development, we thankfully have the duckworths mod! Loved the sound of the tires touching the ground as well

Hello again Peter, I think most (including myself) would agree - the DC3 is an all time classic (from your own videos, I know that it’s an aircraft you’re fond of)! It really does seem to be a double-edged sword, having all these great aircraft coming into MSFS as “freeware”. On the one hand, it’s an amazing gesture on Asobo’s part and helps keep the sim interesting / entertaining (not to mention it easing the load on our wallets haha), but on the other hand, it seems to ensure that the addon will receive very little by way of updates / support thereafter. I don’t know how much of that comes down to AH and how much of that comes down to Asobo, but there’s not much incentive for the dev to continue to put in the work after release. Thankfully, we have the likes of Duckworks, Denarq etc! Cheers and all the best : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Yes thats true. By the way, I was trying to research historic routes for the British Midland DC-3's but there is horribly little info on the internet, would you know where a possible routemap might be lurking at all?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 11 месяцев назад
Sorry Peter, I’m afraid I don’t have much info on Midland routes from this period. There is some limited info on Wikipedia (that mentions flights down to Jersey for example) and a few other slithers of information scattered around the internet. The route I flew here was a real-world one and apparently the flight also used to go via Leeds sometimes. I’d like to find more info myself, but it seems hard to come by. If I do come across anything, I’ll let you know ; ) Cheers once again!

Haha, indeed MZ! I can only assume that either those power lines were not there back in the day, or that the sim has incorrectly identified what sort of power lines they should be. My first time ever on a plane was an RCAF DC-3 rigged with bench seats down the side for paratrooper ops when I was in Air Cadets. Scared shtless until she just floated up and away we went! Took off from CYCD, up to CYQQ over Vancouver Island to CYAZ then back to CYCD. That was 53 years ago and was such a great flight to remember!💕 Absolutely LOVE the DC-3!

Well done! I flew 1,600 hours on the DC3 - V1/ V2 was 82 kts & because of the noise the Pilot not flying would make a V signal with his hand & airborne PF a flat hand up for gear & hand back for power reduction. Takeoff power - METO Power (Max except t/o) - 500 ft Climb power. Landing - keep the power as needed for a steady Approach looking for 82 kts & leave the Pitch were it is till touch down then close the throttles & Pich full forward. (Any sign of bounce go slightly forward on the stick) It was a big heavy docile Cessna in the air & could be a challenge taxing on the ground leaving the tail lock in unless you wanted to turn then independent throttle & brakes.

I recently saw the Midlands livery online as ordered by you and I thought "goody - a DC-3 flight video"'. I used to fly on DC-3's as a kid (passenger of course!!) and they became a firm favourite. I have also loved them on FSX, P3D and now MSFS. Simply put, they are my favourite aeroplane. Oh, and of course I downloaded your livery for use on my DC-3 in tribute to your great videos. As always, fly safe.

Haha, Sherlock Holmes would be proud, sir! I would love to have flown on a DC3 and I can only imagine what a memorable experience it must have been, especially as a young boy. I too, very much enjoyed the aircraft in FSX and P3D (I recall some very memorable flights, trying to operate the DC3 in thick IFR weather, up in the Shetland islands haha), but hadn’t really flown the MSFS version much until this vid (though not for any particular reason). I certainly enjoyed this flight though, all the more so with the Duckworks mod and a shiny new Midland livery ; ) I’m very happy that the livery might get put to further good use! Correction: you dont have to set your both mixtures to rich in the beginning if your unsure in the startup process as after energize [engine], mesh,magneto on both [engine] and starter engine primer [engine] on, it auto selects mix rich for that engine for you when you hit engine primer start [you may not see it happen but it does] . This was done in the real world to prevent engine fires and it works this way in msfs as well :) it assumes you have copilot assist i guess

Your videos always have a nice cinematic touch. The music is usually spot on. An interesting trip in this airplane is to duplicate the early "redeye" flights from KJFK to KLAX. These were originally done in the DC-2 and then the DC-3. I believe there were three fueling stops, in Chicago (probably Midway at the time), Kansas City and Albuquerque. Takeoff is in late afternoon or early evening with a morning arrival in Los Angeles. I think the flights had a change of crew in Kansas City. The planes had sleeping berths for the passengers-truly the golden age of air travel. The flights became non-stop when the DC-4 came along. I wonder how often the weather allowed these trips to go as scheduled.
@IntotheBlueSimulations

Thanks very much, Jay! I certainly always try and elevate my flights, just that little bit : ) Those do sound like interesting flights (there’s something quite appealing, about the idea of heading of into the sunset in a DC3). Sadly, I don’t think I’d have the time to make such a hop and I miss enough sleep as it is already XD A trans-continental US trip is something I would like to undertake at some point though. I just finished reading a book about the first ever trans-con US flight and I think it would be fascinating to try and recreate the same thing in one of MSFS’ vintage aircraft. Again though, such an endeavour would be quite the time sink haha. Cheers and all the best!

Your content is outstanding sir. The vintage music, the cinematics. We do not often see such things these days, where it's all about ''realism'' and the true "raw-flying experience" without any sort of added "cinematics" whatsoever. This was awesome. There were a couple of things I noted though having researched how to fly this thing myself. For starters apparently one should not reduce manifold pressure below 20", and rpm below 2050 for descent, with an exception of 18" / 1700rpm for short, steep, descents. MP should never be below RPM/100 other than when pulling the power on touchdown (e.g. if rpm is ~2500 then MP should not go below 25"). Secondly you should apparently never 3 pointer the DC3. Land on the fronts and hold the tail up until it comes down by itself. A very cool and interesting bird. And other than the above nit pickings, you flew her amazing tbh. Better than I can lol, but I'm improving.

The DC 3 has something special, not only I have quite a lot of Skydives out if it, I also planned to fly the Dutch Dakota Association DC3 myself as a Co Pilot with my customers as pax when my company celebrated its 10 years anniversary. Unfortunately 3 days before this event this aircraft crashed near Texel Island (killing everybody on board). That was quitte a shocking event. The DC3 will always have a special place in my heart though. For my feeling the tail of this one has to come up earlier on take-off run and the pitch angle is quite high on touchdown. RE: Tail Wheel Lock - My father was in a crash the last day of the Korean war because the pilot failed to lock the tail wheel. It set up a shimmy and sideways skid followed by a right main blowout. The pilot tried to make it fly but it stalled and skidded across the tracks. Dad said it was burning before they came to a stop. The pilot was the only fatality. i read in the vskylabs dc3 manual that the fuel cutoff is in the idle position so that the engines don't flood with fuel on start. that being said, i can't start their plane without putting them in autorich to begin with. i just chalk it up to it being a sim, and don't worry about it because i'll always get a fresh plane whenever i want one. i'd only take it more seriously if i had the privilege of flying one irl. the dc3 is a fun plane with a rich history. the twin engines make it a reliable workhorse, while the tailwheel makes for more involved landings, which means more fun joystick flying time, and less "watch as the ils lands the plane for me!". i'm currently learning the basics of navigation in it, just to be able to fly it better, and become a better pilot overall, it's not too overwhelming of a platform, and it's pretty forgiving, though it must be treated with respect if you are to gain anything out of it. i used to hate general aviation just because a cessna is too vanilla for me. it's like when you learn how to ride a bicycle as a kid, you begin with a tricycle. i think i've put in my hours with my tricycle cessna (which weren't very many to begin with) and now found my sweet spot here in the dc3.

I don't know how I missed this review. As a 10 year old, I lived in Derby in the 50's. I used to cycle to the airfield, a bottle of water, cheese sandwiches and mums just baked cake in my saddle bag, ready for a days aero spotting. The airfield was nothing like the sim, completely devoid of any tree's around the perimeter, the A38 running parallel with the Southern perimeter and runway. The aircraft of the day, were Puss Moths, Fox Moths, Gipsy Moths, Tiger Moths, Austers (made locally in Leicestershire) and to my delight, an ex target pulling DH Mosquito. The Mosquito (still with black and yellow stripes) was used for aerial photography. In the mid 50's, Derby Aviation (forerunner of British Midland) started scheduled flights to Jersey using DH Dragon Rapides. The next year, DC3's took over for the Jersey flights. An old gentleman told me of the time he and his wife were going to Jersey for their holidays in the DC3, half way down the runway the aircraft stopped it's take off and taxied back to the stand. Out raced a Jeep with Oxy Acetylene on board, the aircraft was lifted off the ground, the tail wheel welded back on. Throughout this time, no passenger got off the plane. My old friend was relieved that they made it to Jersey in one piece. In the late 50's British Midland sent it's Canadair North Star "Argonauts" to Burnaston for Servicing, The Argonaut was a DC4 with 4 Merlin engines for higher speed. I can still feel the thrill as a young kid standing by the perimeter fence when the Argonauts were winding up their engines belching smoke and grass cutting to get off the short grass runway. Alas, Burnaston Aerodrome is just an old memory for an old guy like me, it is now the home of Toyota car company. As for me, I did become a glider pilot and enjoyed soaring in the sky, just like the Sky Larks at Burnaston did in my youth. C'est La Vie

Thank you very much for sharing your memories, Ptarmigan. That sounds like a dream of a day out, for a young boy growing up in the UK haha! Your memory definitely serves you correctly; unfortunately, no Burnaston scenery exists for MSFS (and it’s far beyond my abilities to make one), so I had to use a little bit of “artistic licence” and modify an existing Derby Aerodrome scenery. The shorter runways and abundance of trees, didn’t make life easy though ha. We should apparently be getting an Argonaut for MSFS at some point, so I’m looking forward to giving that one a whirl (replicating British Midland ops for sure). The DC3 (with the Duckworks mod) is a very nice option for the sim also though and so far I’ve managed to keep all 3 wheels on the aircraft XD I’m glad that your days at Burnaston (amongst other things I’m sure), inspired your to reach for the skies; gliding is such a wonderful way to fly. It’s great that the video brought back some nice memories for you. Many thanks again and all the best! : )

Your tutorials and flights are seriously enjoyable & I learn something new every time. You’ve got me back into old-school radial engine flying & navigation. Thank you very much indeed, Yo, hugely appreciated! I’m really happy I’ve gotten you back into some vintage / radial flying haha. As best I could tell, there’s no DME in the DC3 unfortunately (at least not in the non-GPS version). The lack of DME certainly makes things a little bit trickier but then again, it’s quite fun having to rely on the old stopwatch for certain things. Perhaps Duckworks will be able to mod in a DME at a later date. I hope that clarifies things. Many thanks once again and all the best! : )

Thanks very much, David! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and indeed the livery ; ) The Duckworks mod is well worth it! Firstly, it’s free haha, but it improves the DC3 in a number of areas. I haven’t flown the default DC3 all that much myself, so I can’t offer many direct comparisons but for example, systems modelling is more accurate (the gyropilot cannot be used, unless the hydraulic flow selector is in the correct position), some visual detailing has been tweaked up (riveting on the nose section looks much improved), I believe the flight model and the weight and balance have been updated also. The mod is certainly worth a try at any rate. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and all the best! : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Hi Mercury, If you’re fan of the DC3, I’m sure you’ll really enjoy the Duckworks mod! I believe the blowers / superchargers are used to maintain manifold pressure at altitude; they’re locked out on the default DC3, but I seem to recall that they do function on the Duckworks mod. I don’t think the blowers would have been much use in this particular case, as I was already running the engines up at max manifold pressure for the takeoff (presumably, that power line wasn’t there back in the day haha ; ) I hope that clarifies things a little? @IntotheBlueSimulations 11 месяцев назад
Hi SB, Personally, I don’t have much time in the sim with the DC3 (so I’m not best placed to be giving advice), but WhiteHawk’s suggestions sound like the way to go. With the tailwheel locked, most taildraggers in MSFS behave pretty well, once you have that tailwheel down on the ground. It’s probably worth bearing in mind the crosswind component when you’re landing also; I’m not sure when it comes to the DC3 specifically, but many of these vintage aircraft were not designed to deal with significant crosswinds. Sorry that I can’t really offer up any more helpful advice there. I hope you manage to make some progress with your landings. Happy flying and all the best! : )

Nice - but the landing outside view here looks like a 3-point landing, which you should really not do in a real DC-3. This is because if anything goes wrong in a 3-point landing (e.g., the tail wheel coming down first and quite hard) it can cause a lot of the stress to the plane. With smaller tail draggers it's not a problem, but for the DC-3 it is.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for the feedback, Zeb. I certainly take your point, but unfortunately it’s a bit of a “sim thing”. I find it’s pretty hard to land the MSFS DC3 on the mains, without the aircraft A) bouncing and B) getting incredibly squirrelly on the touchdown. I find going for a 3-pointer, mitigates much of that behaviour. Cheers and all the best! : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 10 месяцев назад
I’m not 100% sure Chris, but I would imagine any reduction in actual FPS, is caused by the smoke effects. The choppy prop animation, I think is meant to simulate the engine taking a split second to catch (it does look a bit “off”, but then I guess it’s probably not easy to animate such a thing). @ysteineker7001
@ysteineker7001 Год назад
Very impressive. IMO the default TO view attitude sitting on ground is wrong. You should not be able to see the horizon, just sky. Ref the skewed view of instrument panel. It like sitting on ten pillows. The fuselage centerline and forward line of sight should be parallel, not crossing some meters ahead of aircraft. But, this my IMO. When tail is lifted, the horizon should be in normal view, similar to a nose gear aircraft. Most msfs pilots was scared when tail lifted and the impression was a dive, pulling up in stall. Long time since flying DC3 - to address the problem I saved my own TO view - using instrument panel as initial reference. But maybe Duckworks fixed this with a new flight model? Seems to be a takeoff with very little tail lift. But maybe this the correct attitude for rotate, or it is normal to get airborne with no stick pull. The same with tailwheel. Even when locked, you need differential braking to keep it straight. But again maybe Duckworks made this easier to control? Anyway - this video inspired me to fired up this old lady again. Thanks!

Cheers Øystein, I’m glad the video has inspired you to fire up the DC3 again! It’s definitely worth giving the Duckworks mod a go also. I can’t really say exactly what has / hasn’t been improved with the mod, having flown the default DC3 very little myself, but I know most aspects of the aircraft have been overhauled in one way or another. I agree with you regarding the viewpoint, though I don’t mind making little concessions like that in the sim (the player has no peripheral vision, or the ability to easy peak over the combing etc). As I understand it, the DC3 did / does somewhat fly itself off the runway, though from vids I’ve seen, I would say that the attitude does look a bit off in the sim (with the tail sitting too low in MSFS). I’m far from an expert though, to be fair. Happy flying! Cheers : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations 11 месяцев назад
Hi Belevezero, Haha, yeah. The MSFS DC3 is pretty skitterish to say the least. I had the same issues and was dancing all over the pedals like a madman during that landing ; ) Locking the tailwheel certainly helps and landing as slow as possible seems to mitigate the behaviour a little bit also, but like most taildraggers in the sim, the DC3 could use some more work (although to be fair, I think the behaviour is caused by sim limitations, as much as anything). Sorry I can’t be of more help on that one. All the best! : )

Can someone tell me the required altitude for changing the supercharger speed?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 4 месяца назад
Hi RF, I’m afraid, I don’t know the specific altitude but, a good time to switch over would be when you’re at full throttle and can no longer maintain the desired manifold pressure (be sure to reduce MP, before engaging the blower / supercharger, otherwise you might overboost the engine!). I seem to recall that on the default DC3, the superchargers are “locked out” / automatic; I can’t remember whether or not operation is modelled on the Duckworks mod. I hope that helps a little. All the best!

The blowers work on Duckworth mod and yes engage them when you can't maintain your desired MP. I usually just do it at 6000 ft.

That comm's unit....that wasn't era correct was it?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 11 месяцев назад
It doesn’t look to be Tryst, no. Although, I suppose in fairness to Aeroplane Heaven, it isn’t stated exactly what era of DC3 they were intending to model, so the radios could have been hypothetically “retrofitted” (but then it would have been nice to see a few more mod cons also - a dme for example). Cheers, all the best : )

Hi Huig, If you’re running on PC, the mod should work just fine (it’s free so, no harm in giving it a go : ) The DuckWorks mod isn’t available on the console though, no. I hope that helps. All the best!

I don’t believe there is, HJ. At least, not on the classic version of the DC3; the GNS530 version has a DME, courtesy of the GNS unit. All the best!

Missed tailwheel lock on take off ?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 11 месяцев назад
Hi Doremy, Well yes, but intentionally. As I explained during the video, I opted not to use the tailwheel lock, as it is so buried away under the centre console and therefore virtual impossible to operate. In hindsight, I should have just assigned a keybind, but that didn’t occur to me at the time ; ) I hope that clarifies things. All the best! : )

unfortunately the flight model is quite ok but the ground handling is poor, it needs modifications that can be done only if you know which values in the flight model need how much adjusting.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 8 месяцев назад
I agree Peter; the ground handling could certainly be better, particularly during the landing / rollout. I know very little about flight modelling, so it would be down to someone else to sort it out; hopefully Duckworks will continue to develop and tweak the flight model of the DC3 (if Aeroplane Heaven don’t choose to do so themselves). Cheers, all the best!

i prefer all H.P. stuff printer i just got is hp. but my computer is too old from hp to run these flight simulators 😢 it take a kind hearted person or hp co. to build me a gaming pc with flight controls. i don’t want to loose my california trucking sim it take someone from them to set it up so as not to loose it. if i got into Terabites memory,ram,big hard drive, big heavy duty graphics card update windows hot sure on the monitor if they have changed them to accommodate the new stuff. mine is gut able. then for planes on the game need a pre flight check list. i haven’t flown anything since in ages back in the single joy stick days. but if my tower is too old to accommodate the new stuff t-totally start from scratch but i don’t want to loose my trucking game. hours of driving to be an owner operator
