One of my first contacts with the British new wave theatre was an after party for the Cinematic Premier of "A Taste of Honey". I was totally starstruck at meeting, only very fleetingly, the gorgeous Rita Tushingham. I'd say that, more than any other experience for this ingenue from Australia A Taste of Honey shaped my Anglophile impression of 1950's Britain. I was an extremely minor part of the Colonial influx from Australia. Barry Humphries (Dame Edna - dead) Richard Neville (Oz Magazine - dead) Clive James (Clive James - dead). All my age and far more significant than this fribble. But, here I am to remember them. Barry Humphries, who had travelled on the same ship as my mother and would look her up up whenever he was in Perth. Richard Neville in some of the wild parties in the Barrenjoey Lighthouse at the North end of Palm Beach. I never met Clive, but I relished his fame on British TV for more that 20 years.

Does anyone remember a BBC serial which appeared ,I think, in the early 60’s. It was called Paradise Street, or possibly Alley, and was broadcast early Saturday evening mainly for children. It was a real groundbreaker as it had a young coloured boy as one of the main characters. He was friends with a similar aged white boy who was the son of a garage proprietor. The garage owner was played by that fine actor George A Cooper, who was rarely off the TV screen during the next 50 years. I don’t really remember the plot, but another of the main characters was a leather clad bully boy who was threatening the two boys for some reason. That bully was Murray Melvin, who I must admit wasn’t someone who I’d naturally cast in such a role. There’s precious little to be found online about this long forgotten serial, but it’s been in my memory ever since. Sometimes I even wondered if I’d dreamt it up, but it did actually exist.
