Delighted by the lack of snobbery in this vlog. Nothing wrong at all with a Greggs sausage roll (and their egg custards are pretty wonderful too). Even in Edinburgh, i ain't paying a fiver for a sausage roll!
Max's Bakes also has a stand at the Saturday Farmer's market in the shadow of the castle for people looking for a morning sausage roll while shopping locally and getting good photos!
Yay! Max's! We get ours from their stall at the farmers market. Sadly Frogmother doesn't like the pork and fennel but we both like the venison and red wine :)
Great video as usual 😊 the humble (and not so humble) sausage roll is a staple over here too. We did eat a few Gregg’s vegan rolls when we were in the UK and I love that most places have good veg options ❤ nom nom nom
Last time I had a sausage roll was from my semi-commercially run high school canteen (some decades ago) in Melbourne and never since. Your video does not make me want to try it again but the positive comments on Greggs pastry took me by surprise. I've always presumptuously dismissed Greggs as the dreggs without trying it, but this video makes me think I might give them a try should the opportunity arise
are there any more meat dense cheap eats? i remember you recommended oink and i will be trying them when i visit later in april! nvm, i think there are some good options from your video
Have I Got News For You, mentioned that people in the UK dip their sausage rolls in their tea. Can you confirm if this is a regular practice in Edinburgh? If it is, why? This was a very good video.😊
Sounds borderline insane to me! I've seen people dip crisps in pints but cannot confirm sausage rolls in tea are a thing that visibly happens around me as I go about my life in Edinburgh 😅 maybe someone in this comment section will prove me wrong!
GF sausage rolls are like hen's teeth, but otherwise almost all restaurants will have plenty of options for you. Can recommend the GF fish and chips at City Restaurant (chippy on Nicolson St).
Query: With the pasty thing- Did anywhere offer a Bridie, or is that not an Edinburgh thing? I always preferred them to pasties, the pastry I think, but as I turned veggie decades ago haven't noticed them about & wondered have pasties taken over? Sorry, just ruminating.😁
Good question! Seems like some traditional butcher shops still make them alongside pies and such - gonna have to do some more in person research in the near future! .)
I wanna try those so baaad! Say, is Edinburgh a dog-friendly city? Dog parks? Dogs allowed in transportation? Leniency to have a dog in a restaurant (if officially forbidden, I don't know UK legislation on this) or shops, etc? It's in my bucket list to visit Edinburgh at some point, but I depend on my 30+kg dog who isn't an official service dog. It'd be helpful to know beforehand just how much we could struggle or thrive.
From what I've gathered from my friends, Edinburgh is less dog friendly than some larger English cities, but I also don't believe it's unfriendly to dog owners. There is a dog friendly scheme called "Dugs Welcome" (yes, with the Scottish spelling!) and I also notice many cafes and pubs being dog friendly beyond this list. I'd recommend making it a warm month visit just so you can take advantage of outside seating, that should very rarely be problematic with a dog! .) Hope this helps!
Despte being baked, Greggs sausage rolls feel like they've been deep-fried. IMO they are by far the worst sausage roll you can get in the UK - I have one at least every year to remind myself why I dislike them so much.
Your definition of "Edinburgh" is extremely narrow, especially given your videos on tourist traps. Venture out of EH3 and you'll experience some amazing bakeries
