A Theory, A Paper, A Turning Point: Claude Shannon's 1948 'Mathematical Theory of Communication' 

Many years before I retired I was a member of the IEEE Information Theory Society and I had the privilege of shaking hands with Claud Shannon at a conference. In his keynote address, he said that he was honoured to have been invited to such a prestigious event and that he was amazed at how far digital technology had progressed in his lifetime. He added that he had listened carefully to all the presentations, but couldn't understand any of them! Naturally, that brought the house down. Later, one of the delegates commented, that seeing him there was like going to a Physics Conference and finding Newton there.
