A Thermoelectric Cooler For The Steam Deck! Can We Cool This Hand Held With Science?

In this video, we try to cool the Steam deck with Science using a Thermoelectric cooler also known as a Peltier Cooler or even Semiconductor cooler. This uses electricity to extract heat from one side of the device bringing the temp down to an almost freezing temperature. Can these thermoelectric coolers work on the steam deck? Well, we’ve got 2 to test made by DEVASO.

I might just do a back cover mod that way it make contact with a metal surface and then this would make a world of difference. Trying to source a new back cover now

LTT did a mod where they cut a hole in the back of the Steam Deck and put a heatsink and fan on the CPU. The Steam Deck did lower temperatures a little bit but the main gain was in FPS. You can get back covers from iFixit.

Not sure it will be 100% what you are looking for, but you could get pretty sturdy case (the kind that basically just goes around the back) and remove the back plate and do the mod with the case. The case would be easier to mod, you would get the results you want, and you wouldn't have to ruin the stock back plate in the process.

the problem is plastic is quite a good thermal insulator, you really need to extend the thermal heat pipe to the back of the device to make any difference - and then you would probably do just as well with a heat-sink and fan. Peltier coolers are really best in temperature critical devices such as astro-cameras (to reduce electronic thermal noise). where you are trying to cool the sensor below ambient. They are also quite heavy on power usage.
