Ar the end of a long day competing and socialising the massed pipe bands gather for the results and salute The Chieftain of the Day with Hielan' Laddie. World Pipe Band Championships 2018. You can view in 4K if your hardware supports it.
If im correct, this is during the competition? So all the houses/clans know 100% what they are doing. Not your ave players, they are THE top notch in the world :)
There probably are a lot playing just the drones. The humming sound. I play in a bagpipeband and atleast 20% of our pipers play on the drones when we have to perform.
Bagpipes are just about the only instrument that sounds better in an open field, rather then in an acoustics room. And a recording simply can't convey the true sound they produce, nor the feeling in your chest as 30 pipes ring through you
@@MrJakson112 No a pipe organ needs the acoustic space to process the sound. Without the reverb it is very dry. The room is part of the instrument. Possibly in a valley or basin.
Grandpa used to blast bagpipes in his car, to announce his arrival, was awesome everytime. "Oh I hear grandpa, still 4 blocks away, but I can hear him."
@@olgagaming5544 the black watch was from the Scottish Highlands. The Germans in ww1 called them the ladies from hell because they wore kilts in battle and were quite good at fighting.
I lived along a large river and we used to fish in the evenings. A big guy with a beard, kilt, the whole outfit would play his pipes in the park while we fished on the river. It was the most perfect place! I been in love with bagpipes and guys in kilts ever since. And, fishing, of course!😉
I am an American of Scots-Irish ancestry and every time I hear the skirl of the pipes a shiver always goes up and down my wee spine! Scotland forever! Never conquered by foreigners! Not even the Romans!
I'm Black, last name James. So somewhere a Scotsman got into my bloodline. I FEEL the bagpipes in my Soul. Love from a Jamaican/American to the Scots. There's a William Wallace in all of us. 💪🏾💖💪🏻
@@vetb882 well it might surprise you that upwards of 40% of Jamaica have or are connected to Scots ancestors. Check out the names in Jamaica, not according to me,but according to a black Jamaican.
Bagpipes might just be my most favorite instrument. I was introduced to them while I was a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute. In our ceremonial parades, we always utilized the bag pipes!
Pipes come from the Highlands in Scotland not from Virginia!!!! You are an ex- colony of the UK you dont have a Nation identity!!!! You are a mix of people from all parts of the world!!!! The ONLY true americans are the natives, the indians!!!!
Witnessed a small band close once, was very loud. But can't understand how anyone will come out of this kind of situation with any hearing left, must be deafening to be in there in person.
@@thoubias Quite true. I play in a band with just two market bagpipes (the German version), and when we practice indoors, there's no way I'm leaving that room without tinnitus if I forgot my ear protection.
bagpipes are not from Scotland, they're a instrument invented by celtic tribes who originate from central Europe, these tribes spread out and the practice of bagpipe music spread with it until it later died out everywhere except Scotland
"You have 20 men in a line banging away on their drums, behind them another 20 playing their pipes... Its no wonder we never won a battle, all the other sides brought guns."
@Barry on D Day, there was a piper walking up and down the beach, encouraging his troops playing the pipes. After the battle, he learned that several german soldiers had him literally in their sights, but, couldn't shoot "the poor bastard."
@Gavin MacNeish Simply naming some Scottish victories neither proves Rambos' ignorance or rebutts his question, as someone else could clearly name the same number of battles where the English won. To make a valid point you'll need to state an approximate number of battles (with reasons why you are including or excluding minor conflicts), the timeframe (with reasons for your earliest and latest dates) and quantify your understanding of the word "nearly".
@Ninja DIY And more of us hate they with each passing day! I'm from 'down there' too, yet with roots 'up there', 'over there' AND the other place as well.
No matter where a Mac Leod is on this planet , it is hard not to "Hold Fast" to the sound of the Piper & not feel a surge of highland blood being awakened. Thank you from Cape Breton Island & my Ancestors of the Hebrides. .
I remember clearly the day that i discover the bagpipes, scotland and the scottish culture in general. I was 7 sitting all the time in front of my computer playing games and discovering the world with "encarta junior" and suddenly i fell in love with scotland, and till now i'm 26 and from time to time i found my self spending hours listening and watching anything related to scotland. All i know that i'm tunisian with an amazighan blood but in parallel universes i'm sure with no doubt that 100% i would be a scottish. Alba gu bràth!
Am from Scotland & live in Glasgow Scotland. I have heard pipes & drums a lot but I still love it & it always brings a tear to my eye. My favourite piece is Highland Cathedral by Royal Scots Dragoon guards. I am originally from a wee seaside town called Nairn, which is close to Inverness , the capital of the highlands. Where we are now is 30min, drive to Edinburgh. Scotland is a great country to live.
I was present. My pipe band competed in the 2018 world championships in Glasgow. That moment in the massed bands realized long-standing dream for me. We were in the second row. We wore black vests with bright scarlet neckties, so if you look very closely you just may be able to pick us out. 🙂
Well I admire there sense of loving there History, there people, there culture. And the world should learn Not blend Cultures because it kills Patriotism, and Pride in one's own country. Something which Scotland has fought and died for to keep theirs, The world should Learn from Scotland because NO other country in the world has such National Pride and Patriotism as Scotland does. Learn don't pass judgment, they fought harder then anyone for there lands! Learn from how much they laid there lives down for the Highlands and there people, there family's, there Clans and there Heritage... Scotland Forever!
originalzeljko urgh don’t be an arsehole just cos some voted to stay in the UK doesn’t mean they’re not proud to be Scottish patriotism is about loving your own country not hating others! Maybe they just wanted to say part of a union. Are the English less proud to be English cos they’re united with Scotland, Ireland & Wales?
Im Scottish living in London and no joke that does something that I can not explain i think regardless of your musical tastes this just is AMAZING 💯👌🏴👌✌🌏
Yup. My best friend growing up has Scottish heritage on both sides and her cousin was a champion piper. I've always loved the pipes and they always make me cry like a baby. Once, during a parade in a big city, I was just walking down the street and along came a pipe band and I had to run into a phone booth so no one could see me blubbering away. I called my friend up and had her listen. She was laughing at me and crying at the same time. Pipes, kilts, the hills full of heather (I was lucky enough to get to go to Scotland for 10 days to work in 1998. . . in the highlands) - it's just all so gorgeous. I even love good hagus! - and my background is Italian/German - and the Lord knows what else since we're generally all so mixed up now. ;)
Took my daughter to Scotland to see my grandfathers house in 2017! After meeting it's people, I wish we could have moved back to Scotland. Nicest people we have ever met! One of the most beautiful countries in the world!! Scottish Pride is Amazing! Long live Scotland.
U know we don't march toward a gun in kilts and. A 3 kill drum on our fronts and bagpipes at the front that would be mental sickness if we marched toward gun fire Inna kilt its stupid
Lay me down In the cold, cold ground Where afore Many men hae gone When they come I shall stan my groun Stan my groun I'll nae be afrae Thoughts o' hime Take away my fear Sweat and blood Hide my veil o' tear Once a year Say a prayer for me Close your eyes And remember me Ne'er more Shall I see the sun For I fell To a German's gun Lay me down In the cold, cold ground Where afore Many men hae gone Where afore Many men hae gone
@@tdb517 😂😆 as someone who has played drums in band, for whatever reason drums seem to be the hardest to keep in sync then anything else 😂😂 🥁 it was fun though
@@bumgarner4987 My guess is that the sharp and definite attack is just very unforgiving. Something like bowed strings has a more indefinite attack giving you some leeway.
@@mkshffr4936 yeah if you’re off even a little everyone knows 🤦🏼♀️ because the sound is so instant and/or crisp (bass is less crisp sound and more instant and booming like thunder) if the bass is big enough it feels like a second heartbeat outside your chest and it makes you feel so alive & excited .
Ah yes the proud Scotsman who loved the place that much he didn't live there the man wanted to breakaway but still wanted to keep his knighthood given to him by the English and their Queen.
You're an English foot soldier, fighting the French in a pitched battle. The fight is going poorly, your unit is half dead or wounded and more French units are advancing on your position. All of a sudden, when all hope seems lost, you hear the sound of pipes and drums echo above the cannon fire playing this tune. You look to the East and see the Scots Guards appear over the brow of a hill, marching to your aid, their presence alone is enough to turn the tide of the battle. EDIT: If you're arguing that the Scots usually fought for the French, please note that I just wrote this as a bit of fun because I was so moved by the music and it wasn't meant to represent any particular true event. That being said, you will see I said the Scots Guards, not the Scottish as a whole. There is evidence of some Scots Guards siding with King James II (an ally of the French) during the civil wars of the late 17th century but after this they fought united as part of the British Army and took part in numerous notable events such as The Peninsular War and The Battle of Waterloo. Even though they may hate their English counterparts, they DID fight side by side and I like to imagine this scenario may have happened at some point :)
I grew up in the Scottish Highlands and it was always a treat to have the local pipe band wander down the street rehearsing. I must have heard every pipe tune there is even if I don't know the names of them all.
I felt an absolute rush of all emotions just a genuine reaction in my soul. Respect an love from New Zealand Auckland. stand strong much love heart an soul Aoteroa, Tamaki makaurau, kiakaha arohanui mana, wairua.
As a young boy in my pipe band (aged 11-16) I loved when after competing all bands would play in the 'massed bands' at the end of the day! Hundreds pipers nd drummers of pipe bands, playing together! What an incredible sound being in the middle of that, real goosebump moments! 🤯
I remember being on the field that day. It was a loooong afternoon as they announced all the placings in all the grades. It was my first time at the "World's". Can't wait to go again if only just to visit and tour around.
As a Marine of the United States Marine Corps currently inactive, I Salute You Scotland Forevermore, keep Fighting the Good Fight, Semper Fidelis,Oorah Carry On!!!
It's beautiful and cold and wet. It's also where some of my ancestors come from, although I haven't come across any Munros yet in my explorations of the family tree.
I remember this day well. I was in Atlanta Georgia at the time, so it took a few hours for the sound to reach me, but when I did my coke turned into scotch, my fried chicken turned into haggis, and my jeans turned into tartan.
Fantastic! Reminds me of my childhood in Swaziland in the 1960s when the Scottish Highlanders where brought in to the country to quell unrest in the country - they gave us a splendid “show” on the town’s oval.
@Michael Halligan Catalonia is not a country historically but who said countries could only be forme in the mists of time? There was no nation state of Germany until 1870. Catalonia is distinct from Spain and had legitimate reasoning for wanting to go its own way. Ironically, there has never been majority support for it in Catalonia but the recent Spanish brutality in putting down the Catalan nationalists will probably soon create one.
@Fife Bloke I think you're wrong about the SNP letting anyone vote. One of the ways they screwed the indyref was in the criteria they accepted for who could vote, which did not even include Scots who live elsewhere in the UK.
@laughing bloke with your words, you show me that you know nothing about Catalonia. Excuseme for my bad english, first of all, but Catalonia have their own language and traditions from the middle age. A state is just a political structure, a nation is something more than that
Salute Scots. The Black Flag regiment served in Ireland during the War of Independence. They also served in South Armagh and Belfast during the Troubles . You salute them ? 🔔 end
I played the pipes in High School! Later was thrilled to find out many of my ancestors were from the Highlands! Love this! Played at Highland Games at Grandfather Mt. North Carolina. Hearing those Pipes resound around the Smokey Mountains give you chill bumps galore!
@@johnmcdonald3280 Scotland IS an army, are we not? And will not any Scot be Scottish in the end, even should he or she tangle at rope's end for having forgotten that?
Hearing this music stirs something in me, such as pride and respect. It would have been awesome to have there and heard this in person. Thank you for sharing.
These are the tunes my heart is yearning for...so healing... so powerful... Even though I am not scottish by birth ... born and bred in Germany... Scotland is where my heart belongs... Hopefully I will be able to visit it again...soon... it´s been way too long ... Last time was 22 years ago ... I am homesick ... Caledonia you´re calling me ...
@Michael Halligan ... still so bitter ... Oh and ... by the way, I wasn´t even born in 41... Now back to your unnecessary comment: To be clarified...being german does not necessarily mean that I am one of the bad guys. I do not use the word with ´N´ in this context, as I do not AT ALL agree with the idiology of that time and regime. So, I don't let myself down to your level of conversation. All I wanted was, to express my true love for Scotland... nothing more ... nothing less.
@Artemis Pyle Thank you so much for your kind words. It really means a lot to me. Nothing and no one will ever come between my love for your beautiful country, rest asured. I am seriously considering to visit Scotland in the near future...as soon as Covid 19 will all allow us to. Hopefully next year. Until then take care, stay safe and sound. Caraid a tha dèidheil air Alba 💖
I walked through the fog of an early Scotland morning of a US Open Championship following the crowd. The sound of the distant bagpipes was like electricity on my skin. I'll never forget it, and with out that experience I would never understand the purpose and feeling of bagpipes being played in their intended environment.
Superb!! To my mind there is nothing more patriotic and soul stirring than a highlander standing in defince for - and in defence of - his country!! With much respect from an Aussie (of proud Celtic descent!). 👍
Aren't haggis small creatures from the highlands of Scotland with short left legs and long right legs to enable them to run around the mountains upright without falling off? They're very fast and very agile. Their only problem is that they can only run in one direction, clockwise.
@@koalaman9585stolen ? The Scots freely entered a Union with England . They freely said no to being a real country with real Independence in 2014 . Jesus , did you even think before you uttered that tripe ?
A sound capable of vibrating your very soul itself cannot be done justice by a recording. I have only heard one such sound but this is one I would want to hear.
