I like that texture of guitar chords and piano melody and bass. It forces the pianist to play contrapuntally and allows the guitarist to navigate a tenor line.

Great! It is interesting to play more towards the extremes of the piano.

An absolute joy to listen to. Two instruments which can so easily become entangled with one another , are shown here how to work in harmony

It took me far too long to realize it, but here's what I've learned that is the number one groove killer in the band context (and groove is what we all want, right?): someone playing too loud. Only when everyone is dialed in, volume-wise, can groove be conjured. I tell my band students: if you can hear yourself clearly, you are playing too loud; if you can barely hear yourself, you still might be playing too loud. If you have a solo, do what you might, otherwise... And especially: drummers and piano players take note. Adapt your dynamic range to the instruments you're playing with.

Front of house sound guy: "You're a pianist? That's so cool, that even the pianists agree that if I can still hear the piano, it's still too loud. Thanks, that really validates my aesthetic, all these years."

Fair point! One way to say this is that the number one rule is that if you can't hear the melody, play softer!

As a drummer greater control happens when you can burn at p. That is where one learns “touch”. Brush work is called for when that sound is needed not as way to control volume.

Hi Joseph, Thanks for your interest! My channel's probably not the right place for you with that subject. I'd search for a different RU-vid channel to help you with note reading (you might also want to try the free Duolingo music app. It's kind of fun!)

The two of you are brilliant... unless there is that level of awareness it can be so difficult to blend guitar and piano... I guess its the same problem as if you had two pianos and two pianists in a band....
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 4 месяца назад
Exactly! Pianists always need to stay aware of what others are doing and figure out how to fit in. Thanks, Matthew!

Jerry Garcia was, by most measures, a much better guitar player than Bob Weir. But I think the Grateful Dead would've sounded less interesting, musically, if it had been 2 Jerry Garcias instead of 1 Jerry and 1 Bob. That occurred to me during the first couple of examples. (the last one clearly found a great way thru it... I noticed that this video has a nice progression of examples). In the early examples, I noticed what I've heard before, sometimes... when 2 people know and are used to playing right where the notes "should" go, then sometimes there's sort of a 2 Jerrys aspect to a jam. I'm not so much a Jerry, but I've heard it happen. Good lesson... I never want to step on people's toes (well, almost never), but when I have a skill deficiency within a particular song or style, it's hard not to do for the OPPOSITE reason.
