A Tiki Cocktail in the Glass That It Was Served In (Not a Tiki?)

My favorite thing about doing this series is exploring vintage cocktails in the glasses that they were originally served in. Aaaand... this one has a built in coaster!? Weird.
This simple recipe rose to fame in the late 1950's in Florida. It was designed for the Gulfstream Derby by the Mai Kai's own master mixologist, Mariano Licudine.
It's an interesting story and I hope you enjoy the show! Please be sure to hit that 'LIKE' button.
Aloha!
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
--------------------------------------
½ oz fresh lime juice
1 oz fresh orange juice
½ oz simple syrup
1½ oz light Puerto Rican rum
A handful of crushed ice
--------------------------------------
Put everything in a blender and and blend at high speed for 15 seconds.
Pour into a stemmed cocktail glass.

The design, alongside the history, makes this cocktail glass one of the best ever. Thanks for a shining a light on it.

FYI, Leonce Picot's first name sounds like Lee-once. We make these by the pitcher in summer. Fresh OJ is essential.

Good job, Spike! I've just updated the Derby Daiquiri story on The Atomic Grog blog with lots more info and photos that manager Kern Mattei and I presented earlier this month at Tiki Oasis. Lots of cool details surround this drink. Okole maluna!

We made this drink tonight and it was amazing. I used Hamilton White Stash, home made simple syrup and home grown citrus. I used our Nutribullet to blend it and it turned out silky smooth, no ice chips. 😋

Maybe you go with the Garrett Richards' method by adding xanthan gum into blended cocktails.

That replica fitted coaster is neat! I wasn't aware of it before. I understand you printed it yourself [good, inexpensive call]. Did you find a pdf of the coaster to print? Where'd you find it?

I tried making this cocktail at home a couple times and felt it was nothing special. Then I went to the Mai Kai and I had one made there and I could not believe how incredibly flavorful it was. It was really one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had but only when I had it there at the Mai Kai using I guess fresh Florida oranges. The Black Magic there was incredible too, though I also probably had one of the worst Mai Tais and an even worse Zombie. So… 🤷‍♂️

Kevin, you nailed it. I just updated my Derby Daiquiri review on The Atomic Grog, and it talks about the fresh juices they use. Makes a big difference. FYI, you must have had a poorly made Zombie. It's easily my favorite from the entire menu. Swanky says its the closest to Donn's original you'll ever find. I would give it another try when they reopen. As for the Mai Tai, it's obviously not Vic's style, but when made correctly it's a very good drink. One of the most popular on the menu.

Why are saying Tiki Central 'was'? It's certainly dead in regards to activity and contributions these days but the site is still active.

I use a Ninja blender, it turns the ice into snow. It's just heck to clean(very sharp blades)

I love that this is a simple recipe that I can commit to memory and I am sure any bar can make it, although not as good as The Breezeway makes them. Definitely got to try one of these now. Thanks Spike!

These shows are so educational. I have drunk so many more cocktails than I otherwise would have. Watching you make the drinks is so inspirational and literally intoxicating. Your plug of Tim Glazner's book on the Mai Kai and other publications is very helpful especially to anyone new to Tiki. I concur that Tim's book is an essential read and has loads of great pics. On another matter, I received my new spike's breezeway cocktail hour swizzle sticks in the post. They’re fantastic. Mind you, these sticks don’t make me look as cool and sexy as Miss Fuji did in her recent vignette. I’m more like passed out on the couch after a few zombies but with a touch of class. Aloha

So yes, less ice, more flavor. It's a subtle cocktail anyway, so it's important to get that right, especially for those 4th of Julys where you pour 10 coupes from the pitcher, and then start on the next pitcher so it's ready in time for everyone to get back! (Unless you pre-batch....) 🙂 Next stop, White Stache instead of Don Q....
@LunarWind59
@LunarWind59 Год назад
Tonight's White Stache version was the best of them all. Part of that might be the difference in the lime juice. Last night we mixed fresh Persian and Key limes, and tonight it was just the Persian. Really gave it that classic "sour" taste. 👍 Lighter and a better summer party drink than a standard daquiri, though. Final try was Denizen 3, which produced a more muted flavor that had a bit more complexity. Very good, but the Hamilton version was the best. Thanks again for all your efforts, Ed! And thanks to you too Spike for bringing us all these different and interesting tiki cocktail recipes and other tikiobilia!

Dude throw a quarter barspoon of xantham gum into there and maybe a little more ice like your second go and you'll be golden.

It's supposed to be smooth, I'd say a scoop and a half of ice, I blend it with a magic bullet so it isn't such a huge surface area that a regular size blender has. I want to add xanthan gum the next time I make that. Also as far as the Rum I use Havana Club and for a bit of a change up I make it for my GF using Thrashers Coconut Rum, she likes it much better.

Sounds like a good cocktail for brunch, but I'll probably either strain what comes out of the blender or just shake and double-strain this drink

Wow! You've gotten pretty darned good at that ice shell thing, Spike! I remember your first attempt on the show, and this new clip shows mastery! Kudos! And yeah, my wife and I have loved blended margaritas for years, and she's expert at blending just long enough there's no chips. We added a little too much ice the first time though. The consistency was just a bit thick, and it thinned out an already mild cocktail. Good drink, though! At 1 1/2 oz. of rum and with all that dilution, you can sip those things all day long! And because it's blended, it stays colder longer than a strained daquiri (which is probably pretty important poolside in Florida... 🙂 ). Plus, it's the kind of thing you can batch and then measure out into a pitcher and make many drinks for many people very efficiently. DEFINITELY a keeper. Thanks!

And who doesn’t love a Daiquiri? Must be a non tikified wanker. Every home tiki bar should have a Daiquiri, Ti punch, Planters punch, and a Mojito included in their menu because of their simplicity and they’re delicious AF!
