Students from across the country come to my property to learn how to timber frame!
If you are interested in taking a timber framing class with me I am planning on holding two classes in May and June of 2025 where we will build and raise a 36x36 timber frame structure.
The classes are 5 days where students learn all about the different forms of timber framing layout, the different tools and their proper usage, how to sharpen chisels and slicks, how to cut straight and square with hand saws, how to accurately layout and cut mortises, tenons, dovetails and other joinery using hand tools. There are power tool demos on the chain mortiser, power planers, larger timber framing saws, and a saw milling demo. Students also get access to a free 12-hour online timber framing class that they can use as a refresher and to further their knowledge. This is a novel idea. Get people to take a class, they pay you for your knowledge, and you get free labor to build a house. Now that's epic! Great job! I like the attention to detail in your class, it's absolutely paramount in doing this type or any type of quality woodwork.

That class was so epic! Chris is probably one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and his skills both in craft and leadership are beyond reproach. Also, shoutout to Portland: a beauty of a town with such friendly people 🙌🏻

Chris thanks so much for putting this video together to commemorate this class! It was an absolute blast to be a part of it. Most definitely a milestone highlight of 2023 for me. Putting our names in the upper timber is amazing! I feel honored to have been part of your timber frame build and I learned so much I will take with me on my project endeavors. I have no idea how you get so much done yourself with a wife and 3 kids, but you’re crushing it. Thanks for being an inspiration of craftsmanship, hard work and humility.

Thank you Dan! You were awesome to have in the class! And cutting that collar tie with the cross saw was probably the coolest part of the whole build! I’m super grateful for you brother! I hope we see each other again some day soon!

Wow!! The whole video was amazing and loved the length of it at over 36 mins. That storm was crazy, but to see you all push on and get that first part constructed was worth it. Then the time jump....epic! To see where it's at in this time frame was awesome. Not gonna lie, after all the years of watching your channel to see your new home coming to life is great! Can't wait to see the next video! And love the woodburned names to let them live on was a nice touch. Take care!

So jealous of all the people that got to help out on that build!! Being in Aus & current situations made it impossible to be there. There’s nothing quite like a project that is guided by a skilled craftsman, set plan in place, meticulously organised & most of all working alongside every fellow worker being equally invested in the build & learning from the experience. Amazing video mate I always enjoy your enthusiasm & knowledge

It hasn't even been a year? Seems ages ago! That storm ripping through on Wednesday was a sight to behold. Watching your video on your barn lean-to led to my learning of your offering the class and I am glad to have been in that first class. Learned sooo much! Tomorrow I meet with a sawyer to start the process of taking what I have learned in the class and applying it to my project. Thanks for doing this Chris! Adam Thompson

Absolutely stunning!!! Looks like sooo much fun and would like to take a future class. As for the hours of video that doesn’t make it, hopefully you’ll edit an extended multi-hour video to capture it all as most creators do now in YT land. Timber framing is a true art and hate seeing the craft slowly die to speed and mass production hones. Maybe make more videos on how to cut joinery and assemble structures. I don’t see much on that. Looks amazing and looking forward to upcoming videos.

It was an amazing experience to learn from you and work alongside a great group of guys. My only regret is I couldn't stay for that final raise. Branding our names into the beam was such a meaningful gesture! I respect the hell out of ya for persevering through all of the crazy weather and obstacles that have come your way during the build. Thanks again for the opportunity to play a small part in this project. I'm looking forward to the next video!

That was an awesome viideo, Chris. Would love to do a timber frame house. We'll see. You guys are going to love it, moving out of the upstairs of the shop is going to be exciting. Have loved seeing the kids in the previous videos, and really loved seeing Utz, even if he was just resting. I presume that was Utz, or was that someone else's dog? Have missed your videos, but you've been pretty busy getting a house built. Getting the family home up is definitely a priority. Looking forward to the next one. Hope you didn't have any more massive storms. That one looked pretty nasty.

When I did my timber frame course with Jack Sobon and Neil Godden we were taught to drill the peg holes before assembly and offset the hole in tenon by a quarter of an inch so that when driving in the peg it will force the tenon into the mortise. Using ratchet straps to force the pieces together would maybe negate that but feels like it would help to do so. If you are implementing the square rule it would be easy to place the holes at the right spot.
@ThirdCoastCraftsman

Oh yes drawboring is ideal and we teach that method (which is very easy with mill rule as well) it’s just more time consuming and does add a LOT of additional areas for mistakes to happen and so for such a large frame and short amount of time we just compressed the joints the best we can and drill and peg at each nice. It eliminates any chance of mistakes. I draw bore all my furniture M&Ts. In future frames we might attempt draw boring if we aren’t as rushed, but even draw bored joints in wet wood can and will open up no matter what and I’m ok with that 😁
@colinstu
@colinstu Месяц назад
Wow that was a lot of work! (well, building it, but especially having to wrangle all those students, teach them all, etc!) Huge undertaking. I know if I tried that it would've needed 4x amount of time easily xD Also any concern w/that rain and the beams absorbing it and causing measurement/size issues later on? Also if you do future classes, assuming there will be more consideration when it comes to where trees could fall? proper insurance to handle that situation? SO lucky that the one tent camper was not crushed, would've been devastating.

Timber framing has always been very soothing and inspiring to me as a woodworker. I love hand tools and just turning a blank piece of wood into something that you can use. Idk maybe I’m crazy but I’m very passionate about woodworking and i absolutely love it although I’m not the best at it, I thoroughly enjoy it. I could break out my hand plane and just make curls all day long with absolutely no purpose, no end goal, just planing for that sound, that feel. Anyways I really enjoyed this video and you sir are a master at the craft

How does the bottom of the framing posts get held down to the floor?
@ThirdCoastCraftsman
@ThirdCoastCraftsman Месяц назад
The shear weight of it holds it in place initially but then when we add the SIP panels later they are nailed to the sill plate that is bolted to the foundation and LOTS of long structural screws are screwed through the SIPs into the timbers which then ties the timber frame to the foundation. I’ll be showing all that in upcoming video too so hopefully you catch those
