In 2016 Dovetail released "Working with Families and Significant Others". A guide to help workers include a family responsive practice approach to alcohol and other drug work with young people. Some of our short videos have demonstrated some of the practice tools mentioned in the guide. You might remember our video "Genograms: When a picture is worth a thousand words" for instance. ( • GENOGRAMS: When a pict... )
In this video Associate Professor Phil Crane shows workers how to use a time line approach to mapping young people’s past, present and future family and significant other relationships. In the time line approach the young person is represented by the point in the middle of a circle and indicates their proximity to family members within the circle at different points in time. This tool may assist a young person to appreciate family as dynamic and evolving and gives space for the discussion of their hopes for future relationships.
