We are very lucky there are Kunekune pigs at all. In the 70s the population in New Zealand was down to about 60 animals. Then two guys called John Simister and Michael Willis decided the breed was worth preserving. They searched far and wide, finally bought 18 pigs and started breeding them in reserves. Today they number in the thousands again. Almost all Kunekunes alive today are descendants of these 18 pigs.
I have a pig trivia for you. Pigs are often used to hunt for wild truffles. Pigs have a sense of smell better than even a dog, and can smell the truffle in the soil. The truffle hunter rewards the pig with grain and takes the truffle from under the pigs snout at the last moment. Many people can be recognized as truffle hunters at a glance because they often are missing a finger or two. O.o
I love that Dakota thank you! If I start talking about truffles/pigs then it will be because of you 🐷❤️🤗 I bet those truffle hunters are missing a few digits!
Found this channel yesterday and just subscribed. These pigs are so beautiful! I love all the fur they have and that plucky attitude that pigs always seem to have . . . Hoshi is my new crush.
Thanks for this factual video. I just discovered your channel and, despite looking at your Facebook page I couldn't work out the real-life stuff like breed, ages, are they pets of one person and so on. I was trying to decide if they were micropigs but, in the absence of human legs or other markers of scale I could only compare your guys to the apples to get an idea of size. So, Kunekunes, yeah? Thought those were bigger, never met one. Anyhoo, it's great to see piggies having such fun, I've subscribed and am saving up for a T shirt!
Lovely comment and yes they are Kunekunes. In the video's they are young but will get bigger over time. You can see that when watching Season 1 then seeing them in Season 9 🐷🤗 Really happy you like the pigs and the show!
