I visited Croatia for the first time a few years ago, this region in fact although not Korcula. I didn't know what to expect but it completely blew me away. I think as far as the Mediterranean goes Croatia is the very best of It. It's paradise.

Great video Gabriel. Really enjoyed it. Croatia is expensive but it is mainly on the coast because of the tourism and because the season is so short (Jun -Sep). Food in Zagreb and other inland towns is much cheaper. Also, another thing is that you don’t have to tip in Croatia as much as we tip in US or Canada. I am Croatian, living in Canada for many years. I visited Croatia last year and my friends told me to just leave a small amount in cash for the waiter. They usually don’t share the tip with other staff (kitchen, hosts, etc.) so the tip can be smaller. If you pay by credit card do not leave a tip on the credit card because it will not go to the waiter/staff. So just leave a small amount in cash directly to waiter.

I traveled all over Europe and actually missed the most beautiful part of it, which is in my home country - Croatia. For me personally it is Dalmatian islands, especially southern ones. I've been in St. Tropez, Nice, Cannes and all those places for me don't come close to the beauty of nature and small Mediterranean towns on Southern Dalmatian islands.

I was hoping you would go through the village where my husband’s grandparents and the grandfather of my best friend came from, which is Lombarda. There are a lot of folks from there here in the San Francisco Bay Area; they even had a Lombarda Club at one time. The island looks so beautiful and idyllic that one can’t imagine why people would want to leave it! But, the older generation who left did so because of war, politics and for opportunities offered them in other countries. As for the Marco Polo story, Korcula and much of Croatia was part of Venice at one time, which means he could have been born in Korcula and still have been born in Venice! 🙃 Thank you for this lovely tour. I hope my husband and I make it there some day.

Hi Gabriel , loving these vids on Croatia , I've traveled extensively throughout eastern Europe and indeed the Balkans , absolutely stunning region of the world , fantastic food , people are super friendly and it's cheap plus the beer is great lol . I've been watching your vids with a particular eye on the cost of day to day living expenses , I was aware of Croatia not being the cheapest of destination's especially in comparison to other countries in the region ,so I'm just wondering if there is much of a hostel / backpacking scene ? And also if it's a viable option to catch public transport ( buses ) etc on the islands ? Keep up the good work my man , really appreciate the time and effort that you go through to bring us these videos , and it definitely helps with my wanderlust ... Thanks again , happy and safe travels amigo 👍🍻

It depends where in the world you live i think. Compared to the UK Hvar old town was expensive, eg two coffees and two cakes were about £15. In Stari Grad a similar treat was less than £8. We found Korcula to be good value as was Porec and Trogir. Dubrovnic is an absolute legend but, again, because of it's heritage, is a little more expensive on most items but relatively cheap on others. The view from the old fortress on top of the mountain is never to be forgotten. We have always felt at home in Croatia, very little street crime anywhere, no beggars, friendly locals and some excellent beers !

I can only mention to you a few beautiful places you can check in the internet and find out their are marvelous: the Albanian Riviera ( in the Jon sea), the Rana e hedhun ( in the Adriatik sea ), our mountains in Valbona and Theth, the Shala river. Croatia is not easter Europe and has nothing to do with eastern Europe
@roodborstkalf9664
@roodborstkalf9664 4 года назад
You are correct of course. But English speakers are notorious bad in using the words north, south, west and east. Rest of Europe uses these words more in a geographical sense, English speakers also seem to use it in a relative sense, in for instance in north or east of what is important to them. In general if they think about Europe they have a tendency to think of France Then you have Germany, that cannot be ignored. All what is east of Germany and what is also speaking a Slavic language they see as Eastern Europe, although in case of Dalmatia this sounds absurd.

Also it's a matter of the political reality of the Iron Curtain, which meant that people from America, etc. couldn't go to those countries and there was very little reporting about them, so it was a mysterious part of the world to us and much less known than western Europe. Of course that changed decades ago but it still impacts the opinions of that part of Europe for a lot of people. We've all seen news and movies about London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, etc. but not so much about Zagreb, Kiev, Belgrade, Minsk. Even though Croatia is west of Greece, it was considered to be part of eastern Europe because of the Iron Curtain.
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 4 года назад
@superbura9 superbura9 "Iron Curtain On March 5, 1946, in describing the recent appearance of economic, social, and military barriers between Eastern and Western Europe, Winston Churchill said in Fulton in the United States, that "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent." This vivid metaphor caught the public imagination, and phrases such as "behind the Iron Curtain" remained in widespread use right up until the collapse of Communism. The European countries which were considered to be "behind the Iron Curtain" included: Poland, Eastern Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania and the Soviet Union. From North Korea to Cuba more countries were separated from the West in the same sense."
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 4 года назад
@superbura9 superbura9 And to be fair, here's another source that states as you said that Yugoslavia wasn't part of the Eastern Bloc, so I guess it depends on who you ask: "Countries behind Iron Curtain are shaded red. Yugoslavia, although communist-run, was independent of the Eastern Bloc. Similarly, communist Albania broke with the Soviet Union in the early 1960s, aligning itself with the People's Republic of China after the Sino-Soviet split." Still, point being that Yugoslavia was communist and a part of Europe that wasn't as familiar or accessible to Americans and others until fairly recently.

Out of curiousity I was wondering if Gabriel ever rides motorcycle. Croatia seems pretty dry. And their smaller roads and islands seem like they would be very conducive to moto rental. I've been subscribed for two to three years now. And I don't recall any vids with him on a cycle.

Croatia is expensive now because it was for old and young and still is THE vacation place for northern Europeans. (Now more for families.) Ideal! Except for COVID-19 Soon prices will go down. It used to be forever Greece, but they went politically haywire and the golden goose stayed away! People really don't like the progressive socialistic way of life. No money, angry people, no fun and tourists stay away. We love Croatia and hope they don't start "improving" . That would mean even higher prices.

Around the Euro crisis of 2012/13, a few Greeks found it OK to start murdering Germans. One murdered a guy from the Netherlands. He said he was very sorry, he thought the guy he killed was a German, if like that would have been OK. Of course it was an exception and it was kept as quite as possible.

Very nice video. Gabriel, you should have brought your parents with you on the European summer tour. It is so relaxing on Korcula island. Your parents would have enjoyed it. Maybe next summer. Too stressful in New York and California. (You mentioned in another video your parents reside in California.) I feel the US is spiralling out of control.
